Biography ofHis Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. on 5 December 1927, being the third and youngest child of Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess Mahidol of Songkhla. His Majesty is a grandson of King Chulalongkorn or Rama V.

His royal father Prince Mahidol was perhaps one of the most modern-minded of all the sons of King Chulalongkorn and his life was dedicated to the development of many modern ideas particularly in the fi eld of Medical Science for which he is known as the Father of the Modern Thai Medical Profession. Prince Mahidol passed away when His Majesty was not yet two years old.

The name of His Majesty, Bhumibol Adulyadej, means strength of the land, incomparable power which becomes prophetic as His Majesty has been a source of national unity and strength of the Thai people.

After a brief period of primary schooling in Bangkok, His Majesty left with the rest of his family for Switzerland where he continued his education at secondary and tertiary levels. Initially His Majesty studied Science at the University of Lausanne. But before he could complete his studies, the Law of Succession bestowed on him the challenging function of the Thai Crown in the wake of the sudden death of his elder brother King Ananda Mahidol in Bangkok on 9 June 1946. His Majesty

Page 5: IOI 2011 - Hand book

consequently switched to Political Science and Law to equip himself with the proper knowledge for his future role. But science has remained his major interest and played an important part in his development projects through the decades.

His Majesty was crowned in Bangkok on 5 May 1950. After the coronation, he went back to Switzerland for another period of study before fi nally returning to Thailand in 1951 to stay.

His Majesty married Mom Rajawongse Sirikit, daughter of His Highness Prince Chandaburi Suranath and Mom Luang Bua Kitiyakara on 28 April 1950. Their Majesties have three daughters and one son.

Considering himself an amateur scientist, His Majesty has turned a good portion of his royal residence, the Chitralada Palace, into living laboratories and initiated pilot projects for improvement of the people’s standard of living. His Majesty’s experimental projects included livestock improvement, milk production, bee keeping, fi sh breeding, reforestation, and food processing techniques. The palace grounds function as one great workshop for the good of national development. His Majesty is credited with a social-economic theory of self-suffi ciency. Some of his inventions such as a cloud seeding technique and the Chaipattana low speed surface aerator, model RX-2 have been patented.

His Majesty’s development eff orts and modernization of Thai farming, village roads, electricity, irrigation systems, and self-suffi ciency farming are evident throughout Thailand. Many other development activities have been implemented by the Chaipattana Foundation, also initiated by His Majesty to promote and co-ordinate the implementation of various projects and to complement the government’s eff orts for eff ectiveness, promptness and relevance.

Apart from development work, His Majesty is noted for his artistic and musical talents. He has played with the world’s leading kings of jazz, and his musical compositions are enjoyed by artists of international fame, who have rearranged and recorded their own cover versions of His Majesty’s work.

The Scientifi c Committee has received a good number of challenging problems from all over the world, thanks to task providers. The competition tasks will be selected by the General Assembly as usual. We do hope that they will select the most suitable tasks which will squeeze the last drop of ability from your brains.

During the week, an IOI Conference will be convened where a number of scholarly papers will be presented. Through this conference, we do hope that all team leaders and deputy leaders as well as guests will learn more about what is going on in the programming contests worldwide. We also hope that discussions during the conference will enable IOI to improve in the future.

This year being the 7th cycle birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King of Thailand, it is an opportune time to introduce to you His Majesty’s IT-related work. The exposition next to the contest area in PEACH Hall includes a section on other Thai national IT and computer contests.

The Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel is fully equipped with sport’s facilities. We do hope that you will use them whenever you want to keep your body fi rm and your mind fresh. In order to make this IOI 2011 a memorable experience, we will organize two fi eld trips for you to visit Thai historical and tourist sites, to learn about both ancient and modern Thai culture.

Have a happy stay and good luck to you all.

The Ancient City SamuthprakarnThe Ancient City, or Muang Boran, is considered as the world’s largest outdoor museum, the 80-hectare city features 109 scaled-down copies of Thailand’s famous monuments and architectural attractions. The replicas were constructed with the assistance of experts from the National Museum to ensure historical accuracy.

The Grand Palace, Wat Prakeaw and Vimanmek Mansion, BangkokThe Grand Palace was not only the home of the King and his court, but also acted as the entire administrative seat of the Siam government for close to 150 years. Kings stopped living in the palace full-time around the turn of the Twentieth Century, but the complex remains the seat of power and spiritual heart of the Thai Kingdom.

Wat Prakeaw, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the adjoining Grand Palace together form perhaps the greatest spectacle for Bangkok visitors. This is one of Thailand’s most important and sacred temples, so you are expected to act with due respect inside.

Vimanmek Mansion is a former royal palace. It was built in 1900 by King Rama V and was used until the completion of Amphorn Satharn Villa in 1906. In 1982, Queen Sirikit had Vimanmek Mansion renovated for use as a museum to commemorate King Rama V and to serve as a showcase for Thai national heritage.

Transportation by SongtaewThe most common public transportation in Pattaya is by songtaew, pickup-trucks with benches in the rear. Most songtaews follow established routes and passengers can hop on and off wherever they choose for a fi xed rate (typically higher for foreigners). If a songtaew is not parked or is devoid of passengers it may be hired as a private vehicle at considerably higher rates. Ask how much the fare is so that you are not charged for a private hire.

CurrencyThailand’s currency is called the baht. One Thai baht is divided into 100 satang, though the tiny golden satang coins are rarely taken or given outside of shopping malls and convenience stores. Bank notes are in denominations of 1,000 (beige), 500 (purple), 100 (red), 50 (blue), 20 (green) and the less common 10 (brown) baht. Coins consist of 25 satang, 50 satang, 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht and 10 baht. Both Thai baht bank notes and coins are sized according to denomination, with larger value notes and coins correspondingly larger than lesser value ones.
