This study showed that the capital city with the highest proportion of volunteers was Adelaide and that the city with the lowest proportion of volunteers was Sydney. As Sydneysiders the results of this study should concern us and cause us to stop and think. As our population ages, there will be an increasing need for volunteers to serve both our older citizens and others in our community who need our support through a wide variety of programs. As a school community we encourage our students to develop a strong commitment to service to others through a wide variety of social justice initiatives including the Caroline’s Footsteps Program where Year 10 students participate in the Meals on Wheels program. It is our hope that our students will continue to look for practical ways to be of service to others when they leave school. The likelihood of this happening is increased when these same values are clearly demonstrated within the family. Thank you very much to all those parents who are excellent role models and who regularly volunteer in a myriad of ways such as coaching or managing junior sporting teams and helping with community building or fund-raising activities in parishes and other local groups. This is a marvellous achievement to have two students receive this prestigious award. Congratulations to Nicole and Kate and their teachers, who have helped them achieve these outstanding results.

Year 11 Final Preliminary Exams and Year 10 Trial School Certificate Exams Best wishes to Year 11 students as they complete their final preparations for these examinations which commence on Thursday.

The exams for Year 10 commence on Day 1, Term 4 and so Year 10 students will need to spend some time during the next few weeks preparing for these. With an organised approach students should still be able to enjoy significant leisure time in the two week vacation period.

Best wishes for the final weeks of this term and a good holiday.

Yours sincerely Ms Christine Howe Principal

HSC CHEMISTRY NEWS VET REPORT & AWARDS

PARRAMATTA DIOCESE QUIZ YEAR 10 HSIE EXCURSION

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

HSC CHEMISTRY NEWS The Higher School Certificate Chemistry class recently competed in the National Chemistry Competition. This competition attracted over 100,000 students from 1300 schools throughout Australia, Asia and the Pacific.

Our College Chemistry students are very capable and conscientious and success in this competition requires a sound knowledge base, advanced mathematical skills and an analytical mind. The College achieved particularly pleasing results this year with 3 students receiving Distinction Awards and 4 students receiving Credit Awards. All 16 members of the class are to be commended for their efforts.

Distinction Awards: Nithya Reddy Veronica Ung Lee Ann Thomas

Credit Awards: Giselle Murray Rebecca Bodel Danielle Heyhoe Tanya McLaren Mr Alan Wilson - Chemistry teacher VET REPORT Recently, Hospitality and Business Services students undertook workplacement in the wider community as part of their Vocational Education and Training Course. These students were employed in a range of sites such as Nepean Private Hospital, Hog’s Breath Café, Panarotti’s Pizza, Penrith Court House and the Office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Western Sydney.

We thank the employers for taking the time to enhance the skills the students learn in the classroom and their teachers Ms Ramundi and Miss Krawec for the great job they did in preparing the students for this task. We would also like to thank the parents for the running around which had to be done to make their daughter’s placement a success. In the near future Entertainment students from Caroline Chisholm College will be involved in event management of the solar boat challenge at Penrith Lakes and we look forward to hearing of the outcome of that event.

VET AWARDS In the last week two Vocational and Training Awards have been announced, both in the Penrith District and across Australia. Students are congratulated on the following results: Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Penrith School Regional Awards recipients: Nicole Barcley for Business Services and Stephanie Miller for Hospitality. The Australian Vocational Student Prize from the Federal Government for outstanding Vocational Student was awarded to Nicole Barclay and Kate Douglass for her Retail Traineeship at Gloria Jeans. Both students will receive a cheque for $2,000 and a certificate. There were only 442 of these prizes in Australia, 125 from NSW and only 13 from the Parramatta Diocese. This is a great achievement for all of the girls. Ms Caroline Wilson

PARRAMATTA DIOCESE QUIZ CHAMPIONSHIP On the evening of 12th September, six Year 11 students in two teams participated in the inaugural Parramatta Diocese Quiz Championship, sponsored and run by Campion College in

Toongabbie. This competition was an opportunity to compete with other schools and demonstrate our knowledge of literature, history, theology and science. We arrived at Campion College and were introduced to our competitors, and each team was secluded whilst answering 30 short questions on general knowledge. We then participated in the heats against the other schools where the teams had to beat their opponents to the buzzer to answer the question. The first Chisholm team consisting of Helen Phelps, Kyra Thorncraft and Jessica Rossiter did well and answered many of the questions asked. The second team, consisting of Natalie Chehade, Jenna Cullen and Elisa Pruss competed in the next heat, but unfortunately neither team made it to the semi-finals. While the two teams outscored their opponents in the buzzer rounds, they did not progress when the buzzer round scores were added to the first 30 questions. After the heats we were treated to a sausage sizzle and drinks, and then remained to watch the other schools competing against each other. Overall it was a great experience. The challenges and competition were an exciting way to get involved and increase our knowledge. Thanks to Mr King for organising the teams and transporting us to the venue. Jenna Cullen and Natalie Chehade YEAR 10 HSIE INCURSION On Tuesday 28th August, Year 10 went on an excursion to the Blue Hills Wetlands in Glenmore Park. On this excursion, we were accompanied by our HSIE teachers: Miss Ramundi, Mr Butera, Ms Dunne, Ms Crawley & Mrs Wilson. We were given a handout to complete to fulfil our fieldwork requirements and we wandered around looking at all the native flora and fauna. Whilst one half of Year 10 were on their fieldwork, the other half listened to a talk from four members of the Vietnam Veterans Association. In the second half of the day we swapped over. The Vietnam Veterans spoke to us about their experiences in the Vietnam War including what type of soldiers they were and what they did in the war. Four students were able to get dressed up in the uniforms the soldiers wore whilst they were out in the fields. The speakers also showed us how soldiers slept, what they slept on and all the things they received and used whilst they were in the fields. Overall it was a great day and we learnt a lot about the Vietnam War and its impacts, which will assist us in our School Certificate Studies. Emma Klinsic & Rebecca Roig - Year 10

LEADERS’ TRAINING DAY SPRING WORKING BEE

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Leaders’ Training Day The annual leaders training day was held at the Glenmore Park Youth Centre on Friday 31st August 2007. After an extremely loud entrance when we were unable to turn off the alarm all the leaders and house leaders gathered to share ideas and train to become the talented leaders they all are. We started off the morning with arranging ourselves in order of our birthdays WITHOUT any verbal communication. As hard as it seems, the use of holding up fingers and making shapes of the letters of our month, we all completed the task with ease. In groups we were giving different points to cover in regards to being a leader, what it means or what it doesn’t mean. Individually, each leader composed a letter to a friend explaining why they thought they were nominated as a leader and what made each one of us special as a leader. After having cupcakes for morning tea we regathered for our next task. Throughout the day we completed activities such as “building the highest newspaper tower”, characterist ics of leaderships, brainstorming our ‘ideal’ school with coloured rooms and roller coasters at the oval and what we aim to develop as leaders of our school. To end the day we did ‘warm and fuzzies’, a task where we all wrote down qualities that we admired about each other to motivate us as leaders to fulfil our duties to the best of our abilities with our unique and God given qualities. Thank you to Ms Howe and Miss Prosser for organising a great day and preparing us for the successful year ahead. Amy Meekings & Erin Stewart

Spring Working Bee A willing and enthusiastic group of helpers renewed the mulch on all the gardens in the front sections of the school and assisted with cleaning of the outdoor furniture and lockers. Thank you to Mrs Cathy Moran our Business Manager who organised the morning and to all who attended: Anne Borg, Stephanie Bord, Sione Feiloakitau, Liana Piccirilli, Emily Crane, Allistair Astbury, Zoe Astbury, Michael Middlebrook, Cassie Middlebrook, Sue Graham, Ross Hughes, Gemma Hughes, Jan McNeil, Margaret Stewart, Paul Hocking, Jessica Hocking, Lyn Woodward, Jessica McBroom, Shelley Baldwin, Caelan Baldwin, Taine Baldwin, Teagan Baldwin and Jane Fonmanu.

Each participant earned 50 service points for their house or that of their daughter. This resulted in the following House points: Macarthur 300 Gilmour 100 MacKillop 250 Jackson 100 Wright 150 Kenny 100

YEAR 11 HOSPITALITY EXCURSION Bon Appetite! On Tuesday 4th September, Year 11 Food Technology and Hospitality students, along with Miss Krawec and Mrs Brown, met at Penrith station at 7.40 am to catch a train to Town Hall. Once there we walked to Sydney’s famous Centre Point Tower. We had a tour of various aspects of the Tower, including the kitchens, delivery dock and restaurants. Our tour guide told us many things about the Tower. It also has lots of shops inside it, which added to our excitement. He also informed us that the tower has two restaurants and was not originally built to be as it is today, in fact, the intention of the building was for offices. While discussing the two restaurants in the Tower, we learnt that the 360 restaurant is an a la carte menu (which means off the card), while the other restaurant is a buffet. We then went to lunch at the buffet restaurant. There was so much variety that it was hard to choose between the Indian, Chinese, seafood and as for the Aussie food, well let’s just say that the kangaroo and camel didn’t appeal to our appetites! The view was spectacular; the city looks beautiful from 350 metres in the air. The food was delicious and the view was amazing, we could have stayed there forever. It was a fantastic experience and we had a wonderful time. Thank you to Miss Krawec and Mrs Brown for organising the day and taking us there. Written By Jennifer Staunton
