  • Memory CornerLiving with Alzheimer’s: Denial and Acceptance

    By Ava M. Stinnett

When a loved one starts to exhibit signs of dementia, it can be difficult to know what to do first. Are the signstypical of the normal aging process? Maybe it’s a medical issue that mimics dementia but is treatable and, perhaps, reversible. Or maybe it’s cognitive decline. Whatever the clue might be, how do we deal with aparent, spouse, or friend who refuses to seek medical attention?

One of the most difficult steps may be engaging them in a discussion of what is happening. Some folks arewilling to talk about symptoms because they want to gather as much information as possible to make plansfor the future. Others, however, may be reluctant to see a doctor because they believe that their occasionalforgetfulness or trouble coming up with the right word is perfectly normal. Then there are those who refuse totalk about it at all. This may be due to denial. Admitting that a problem exists may mean having to deal withthe truth before one is ready to do so. The thought of making plans for future living arrangements or drawingup the necessary legal documents (e.g., durable power of attorney, living will, healthcare directive, and lastwishes) may seem overwhelming. Yet once a person has a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, their signature may nolonger be legally binding.

In addition, people who have always been independent are often adamant about handling their own affairs. The need for this control may intensify as the ability to navigate one’s daily life begins to slip away. A formalassessment and diagnosis can be helpful in admitting the need for help. Although awareness of dementia-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s has gotten much more attention in recent years, it still carries with it aterrible stigma.

What to Do?First and foremost, remember that the earlier the diagnosis, the better the chances are for treating and possi-bly slowing the progress of the disease. However, try not to argue with your loved one about the need for adoctor’s visit. Trying to force the issue may only increase your frustration and their resolve not to go. Main-taining their self-esteem and a sense of control will work much better in the long run.

Second, dementia-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s are family diseases. You may find that denial existseven among siblings or close family friends. Keep in mind that people don’t always know how to help or whatto say. Strive for open communication and look for ways to divide caregiving tasks among those closest toyour loved one.

It helps to realize that people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease maysimultaneously acknowledge and resist aspects of their disease in order tomaintain some sense of control in the face of cognitive losses.Acknowledgement is expressed in terms of acceptance of the disease and itssymptoms, expression of feelings about the disease, and strategies to cope withthe symptoms. Resistance may be expressed as denial and reminiscence aboutlife achievements and past experiences. Living with Alzheimer’s disease shouldnot be described as either denial or acceptance but rather a combination thatincludes both acknowledgement and resistance. (Macquarrie, 2005)

  • Weighted Blankets and Dementia

    History:

Originally weighted Blankets were used as a therapeutic device byoccupational and physical therapists when working in a rehabilitationsetting. As research has grown supporting the benefits of weighted blankets, the use of them with at risk populations has also grown. As a result, weighted blankets are now commonly used within many senior livingcommunities as a grounding tool to help people with dementia feel safe andsecure.

    Selecting a Blanket:

Weighted blankets come in all different sizes, shapes, textures, patterns andweights, and are usually selected by the user’s preference. Blankets can beused by draping them over the user while they lay down, or by wrappingthem in the blanket while sitting. Blanets can be purchased from a variety ofplaces, like SensaCalm, an online provider.

    Benefits of Weighted Blankets:

People with dementia often experience anxiety and fear as a result of theirinability to retain short term memories. One benefit to weighted blankets isthat they facilitate calm, nurturing, soothing, and comforting feelings tousers, which helps reduce anxiety and fear. The sensation has often beendescribed as the deep pressure feeling of a hug or swaddling that youtraditionally receive from a loved one. The major difference being that theuser has the autonomy and control over the experience, without it beingforced or initiated by someone else.

    Old

    erBy Ruby

MacDonaldEmpowered LivingThe other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback; I don’t think of myself asold. Upon seeing my reaction, the woman was immediately embarrassed. I then explained that it was an interestingquestion and I would ponder it.

Old age, I decided, is a gift. I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted tobe. Oh, not my body, of course! The wrinkles, the baggy eyes, skin spots and bumps, the sagging butt, and - - -.Often I am taken aback by that old person who lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for verylong. This is God’s plan for us.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatterbelly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself and less critical of myself. I’ve finally become my own friend andI like her.

I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly trinket. I amentitled to overeat, to be messy and to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comeswith aging. I dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50’s and if at the same time wish to weep over alost love, I will.

I will walk the beach in a swimsuit that is stretched over a bulging body and will dive into the waves with abandonif I choose to despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. Oh yes, they too, will eventually look like me.

I know I am often forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. Eventually I remember theimportant things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one or whena child suffers or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength andunderstanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of beingimperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray and to have my youthful laughs be foreveretched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed and so many have died before their hair couldturn silver.

Most importantly, I think that by living this many years, I have finally begun to understand a bit about why weare all here; why we were gifted to walk the pathways we have trod and maybe glimpse a bit of God’s plan for nowand later. I have been truly blessed.

So, to answer the question: I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going tolive forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been or worrying about whatwill be. And---I shall eat a bit of the “dessert of life” every single day! (Author unknown – an email forward5-05)

***I’d like to thank the person who wrote this article because she has fed us some challenging food for thought. Todaylet’s all rethink our own attitudes about aging. If they are less than positive, let’s turn those thoughts around sothat each and every day that we are given will be a precious gift for which we truly give thanks and receive withgratitude each and every morning as we awaken.
