Dementia and Nighttime DreamingBy Ava M. Stinnett

Recently, a family member with early stage Alzheimer’s was injured when heslipped as he got out of bed. What we found puzzling isn’t that he had no memoryof the actual accident, but that he described seeing himself standing to the sideand watching it occur. Was he dreaming, hallucinating, or sleepwalking?

Numerous studies have shown that sleep is just as important as diet and exercisewhen it comes to leading a healthy life.•One study showed that when a person isasleep, their body filters out Alzheimer’s-causing beta-amyloid proteins, and thatlack of sleep could possibly lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Much more research isneeded, however, to determine a distinct connection between sleep habits andvarious types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

For people with Alzheimer’s, changes in sleep habits are common. This mayinclude developing a habit of daytime napping, difficulty falling and stayingasleep, an increase in dreaming (both vivid and recurrent dreams), calling out oryelling, or acting out dreams in their sleep.

Researchers do not completely understand why sleep changes occur.Depression, restless leg syndrome, and chronic pain can affect the quality ofsleep. The impact of Alzheimer’s on the brain could certainly be at play. Inaddition, recent studies have shown that specific medications used to treatAlzheimer’s influence the quality of sleep, and particularly the quality and amountof dreams. The acting out of dreams, especially if it leads to injury or begins tointrude into waking life, can be a serious health risk that demands medicalattention. Here are some tips for ensuring that your loved one stays safe.

· Arrange for a thorough medical exam to rule out any potential illnessesthat may be contributing to the problem.

· Encourage regular daily exercise· Maintain regular times for meals and for going to bed and getting up.· Treat any pain with physician-recommended medications or physical

therapy routines.

Although there are medications available to treat sleep disorders for people withdementia, most experts and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) stronglydiscourage their use due to the increased risk for falls, confusion, and risk ofstroke.

Determining the best course of action can be tough when a family member orloved one is displaying alarming symptoms. You’ll want to try your best tounderstand all of the available options and to talk with others about the benefitsand risks of each choice during your journey with Alzheimer's disease.

TimeSlipsTimeSlips is a creative short story writing program that takes place in our Memory CareCommunities. A programming staff member at each community is in the process of obtaininga TimeSlips Facilitator Certification. During these facilitated sessions, residents at all stagesin the progression of dementia are encouraged to participate. The residents are each given acopy of a picture to hold, and are told that there are no right or wrong answers, just pureimagination. They then embark on a creative journey to write a short story about the picture. All resident comments are included in the story, which makes this activity failure free. Belowis a short story written by our Memory Care residents at Carlton in Davis. Keep an eye outfor these hilarious stories that honor our Memory Care residents and their creative spirits.

Had a Merry Christmas, and Going to Havea Happy New Year!

It looks like Santa Clause is taking a rest! Or itlooks like he's taking a professionalpicture...We know it's Santa at least because ofthe cup and big white beard. "No, no," saysBetty, "We know its him because of the whitecuff!" And we know because he 'Ho-ho-ho's'! Itlooks like he has coffee in that cup, and he'stoasting to something. Someone must have giv-en him that cup! "Happy Holidays" he's saying. He's tired from the long trip because he carriesa lot on his shoulders for the children. He'stoasting to his helpers on another good year! Inthe background you can hear the Christmas car-ols and Ho-ho-ho's! It smells like apple pie inthe air all the way back in Davis, California. Hedoes have his other hand covered though, so wedon't know what's in that hand. It looks like hiscup is empty, maybe he wants eggnog now.…spiked eggnog.

McDonaldWhen we traveled to Bend, Oregon, we stopped for breakfast in Williams, Ca. As we were leaving, the local paper, Territorial Dispatch, caught my attention with a column titled ENHANCEDLIVING by author, Debbie Petersen who had recently passed away. If I’d known her, I’m surewe would have had much in common. I want to share some of her important and insightful thoughtswith you mixed in with some of my views.

In December we generally dash about buying gifts for all those we love, however we usually forgetthe one important person we should love the most . I have often written aboutthis subject because of its importance and how it affects every aspect of our lives. I am referringto “forgiveness.” Our own happiness and peace of mind comes from being able to forgivefor things we may or may not have done, and others for the way they have hurt us emotionally orphysically. Forgiveness has no boundaries that contain the kind of hurts we’ve given and orreceived both intentionally and unintentionally. For instance an alcoholic father is too sick to seehow he damages his family, therefore a son or daughter may feel justified in hating that fatherforever, thereby damaging themselves and all those who love them. A vicious circle.

Petersen says, “Picture a triangle and place pride at the top and then selfishness and fear as thebottom points of the triangle. Pride, selfishness and fear are the three things that trip us up.”Most of us think we are beyond those three, but if you’re irritated because someone is taking toolong in line ahead of you, IT IS PRIDE. If someone hurts your feelings, IT IS PRIDE.

As with anything worthwhile, it takes perfect practice to accomplish this. But first we have to beable to recognize and admit that we behave that way. Once we do, it is easier to battle and correct.Of course we may falter, but then we just pick ourselves up and try to do better. We are muchhappier when we succeed. Unhappiness comes from not forgiving. To be unforgiving causes usto be bitter, resentful, (hateful) and unbending. Clearly it is pride that makes us feel justified inholding on to those heavy ugly resentful feelings even though they may have been justified at thetime and made us feel better, in the long run, it ruins our health, and our relationships, for itcannot be hidden.

We are afraid to love for fear of not being able to trust. We areselfish because we want to hold on to the hate/resentment. We are justified we have convincedourselves. And selfish because we are spiteful, denying the person who offended us, the same peaceof mind that we too deserve to have. It is clear that no man is an island. And one person’snegative energy affects the energy of all those who live, work and associate with us.

We wish you a Happy Holidays season filled with self love, forgiveness and the happiness thatcomes from that simple but important act.

Debbie Petersen, author of
