The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests that adults, including the elderly, get between 7-8hours of sleep, while teenagers need approximately 9-10 hours of sleep each night. School-aged childrenneed at least 10 hours a day. The amount of sleep that an individual requires varies, depending on factorslike age, activity level, and other health issues. 5 effects of Sleep Deprivation Over time, occasional badsleep and continued poor sleep can build up, and affect life in some severe ways. These include:

1. Chronically sleep-deprived individuals are at risk of weight gain, which can lead to physical issues andunhappiness in general;

2. Hormone levels can be disrupted, particularly the stress hormone cortisol, and the appetite-regulatinghormone, leptin;

3. Weakened immunity to illness;

4. Decreased alertness and reaction time can lead to accidents, for individuals who are driving, or justgoing about their day. WebMD notes that getting just 1.5 hours less sleep than needed can lead to a 32percent reduction in alertness.

5. Increased mortality risk for those adults who get less than six hours of sleep each night. WebMD alsoreports that sleep is a bigger risk factor for early death than smoking or high blood pressure.

The bottom line is that getting enough sleep is important to living a healthy and productive life.Unplugging from the ever-connected society and putting off TV time can go a long way toward helpingindividuals get more sleep.

Get a Great Night Sleep

Being kissed under the mistletoe has been a Christmas tradition for more than a thousand years. But mistletoeis not only associated with a gentle kiss, it has a lore all its own.To the ancient Scandinavians, mistletoe symbolized peace. Enemies meeting under the mistletoe declared atruce until the following day. On a more domestic note, disgruntled spouses kissed and made up under thegreenery.The Druids believed mistletoe possessed magical powers. Their priests cut the plant with golden sickles andgathered the trimmings on white cloth so the plant would never touch the earth and lose its enchantment.The French didn't like it. They said mistletoe was cursed because it grew on the wood from which the cross ofChrist was made and that it was doomed to be a rootless parasite forever.In the Middle Ages, mistletoe was hung from ceilings in Europe to ward off evil, or it was dangled over doorsto prevent the entrance of witches. If mistletoe was suspended over a crib, the child was said to be safe fromkidnapping.Viking lore describes the goddess of love, Frigga, who made each plant and animal promise not to kill her sonBaldur. She forgot the mistletoe plant and Baldur was killed by a spear made from it. The white berries on themistletoe are said to have been created from her tears.When her son returned to life, Frigga proclaimed the mistletoe to be sacred. She kissed everyone who passedunder it and decreed the plant should henceforth bring love. This is said to be the origin of kissing under themistletoe.So go ahead. Kiss under the mistletoe, have fun doing it, and give a nod to Frigga for starting a very enjoyablecustom.

When we traveled to Bend, Oregon, we stopped for breakfast in Williams, Ca. As we were leaving,the local paper, Territorial Dispatch, caught my attention with a column titled ENHANCEDLIVING by author, Debbie Petersen who had recently passed away. If I’d known her, I’m surewe would have had much in common. I want to share some of her important and insightful thoughtswith you mixed in with some of my views.

In December we generally dash about buying gifts for all those we love, however we usually forgetthe one important person we should love the most . I have often written aboutthis subject because of its importance and how it affects every aspect of our lives. I am referringto “forgiveness.” Our own happiness and peace of mind comes from being able to forgivefor things we may or may not have done, and others for the way they have hurt us emotionally orphysically. Forgiveness has no boundaries that contain the kind of hurts we’ve given and or receivedboth intentionally and unintentionally. For instance an alcoholic father is too sick to see how hedamages his family, therefore a son or daughter may feel justified in hating that father forever,thereby damaging themselves and all those who love them. A vicious circle.

Petersen says, “Picture a triangle and place pride at the top and then selfishness and fear as thebottom points of the triangle. Pride, selfishness and fear are the three things that trip us up.”Most of us think we are beyond those three, but if you’re irritated because someone is taking toolong in line ahead of you, IT IS PRIDE. If someone hurts your feelings, IT IS PRIDE.

As with anything worthwhile, it takes perfect practice to accomplish this. But first we have to beable to recognize and admit that we behave that way. Once we do, it is easier to battle and correct.Of course we may falter, but then we just pick ourselves up and try to do better. We are muchhappier when we succeed. Unhappiness comes from not forgiving. To be unforgiving causes usto be bitter, resentful, (hateful) and unbending. Clearly it is pride that makes us feel justified inholding on to those heavy ugly resentful feelings even though they may have been justified at thetime and made us feel better, in the long run, it ruins our health, and our relationships, for itcannot be hidden.

We are afraid to love for fear of not being able to trust. We areselfish because we want to hold on to the hate/resentment. We are justified we have convincedourselves. And selfish because we are spiteful, denying the person who offended us, the same peaceof mind that we too deserve to have. It is clear that no man is an island. And one person’s negativeenergy affects the energy of all those who live, work and associate with us.

We wish you a Happy Holidays season filled with self love, forgiveness and the happiness thatcomes from that simple but important act.

Debbie Petersen, author of
