The inspiration for this section came from a dad who is relatively new to the Golden Isles. He was

seeking information on summer camps and programs for his two elementary-age children, and having difficulty finding it, especially Vacation Bible School programs. This really resonated with me and I real-ized that he was right! We needed a com-prehensive resource – a guide for parents to access this information.

As a mom, I think we all look at summer programs differently – whether it is to entertain our kids, provide childcare, or simply expose them to something new and different. As the mother of a 12-year-old and an 8-year-old, I can speak from experi-ence when I say it is sometimes difficult to know what is offered in our area and how to find it. Each year I find out too late about opportunities that were available that my kids would have enjoyed.

We are fortunate to live in an area with many great options ranging from full-day camps to shorter half-day camps for

two-to-three days per week, from fine arts programs to outdoor programs that educate our kids about the beautiful area in which we live. We also have programs that teach our children how to be good stewards of this beautiful area and how to give back to their community. We have included as complete a listing as possible for area Vaca-tion Bible School offerings, dates, times, and themes, if available. Some churches have not finalized their program dates, so if you don’t see yours listed, please call them to confirm.

We have worked hard to compile a com-prehensive preview of summer programs to assist parents in planning activities for their kids this summer. My hope is that we will continually be able to provide more in-formation and listings each year to provide our readers with the information you need to plan your summer.

Summer is a’coming, the season marked by long, lazy days, copious amounts of sunshine and VBS – a familiar acronym for Vacation Bible School, a church-hosted, week-long Bible themed program geared towards elementary-aged children.

Vacation Bible schools vary in days, times and age requirements. However, whether the VBS is in the morning or eve-ning, Monday through Friday, or Monday through Wednesday, there are some things all great VBS experiences have in com-mon:

• Enthusiastic volunteers• Safe and caring environments• Exciting activities• Captivating themesA great choice for a summer activity,

at VBS kids get to play, learn, do crafts, sing songs, dance, and eat a snack, while parents can feel good knowing their kid is active, social, creative and learning whole-some things.

Churches benefit with the opportunity to reach out into the community and love their neighbors.

“The thing that is most impactful for my daughter is seeing the older girls helping out, having fun and being excited about

Jesus. It’s infectious to the younger ones,” said Jessica Paulding. Daughter Gracie, 6, chimed in, “I like the music, dancing, and crafts the best.”

Each VBS is theme-driven, built on Bible memory verses, engaging videos, up-beat songs and activities to reinforce the lesson. Parents can talk to their children each day

about what was learned that day – kids are usually eager to tell – making great content for family dinners or bedtime conversation.

Paula VanBoxel says the final day is her favorite because most Bible schools end with a recital-like children’s performance of the week’s favorite songs and memory verses.

“Watching Oliver sing the songs with motions on the last day was really pre-cious. He was so into it,” VanBoxel said.

Vacation Bible schools are solely run by church staff and volunteers, so there is rarely a fee for participation. Parents can either drop their children off or choose to volunteer in an area that interests them.

Some churches even provide childcare for smaller children of parents who are working the VBS.

“I like the snacks, and the memory verse contest because there is a prize,” exclaimed 6-year-old Oliver VanBoxel.

Vacation Bible Schools are a nice break from slathering sunscreen and managing wet bathing suits and sunburns. They are also a fun way for churches to share their message.

Rick Postell, children and small-groups pastor at Christian Renewal Church, said, “The greatest thing about VBS is that it’s a tool to get the word of God into the hearts of children, in their homes and into the hearts of their parents.”

Celia Eisentrager, children’s director at Brunswick First United Methodist, said: “I’m looking forward to the adventure that awaits the children in our community as they experience God’s love and grace through Vacation Bible Schools.”

One local highlight of summer known to most high school students in Glynn County is the Gathering Place’s Main Event.

Put on by students for students on Sunday nights in Strickland Auditorium at Epworth by the Sea, the Main Event is quite an experience: hilariously campy skits, outrageous large-group games – the mattress race is a favorite – loud, edgy mu-sic, and direct, relevant teaching by gifted communicators from around the world.

However, a lesser known and potentially more rewarding summer opportunity of-fered by the Gathering Place is its sum-mer internship program. Gathering Place Executive Director Lucas Ramirez called the program a leadership builder.

“We develop the next generation of leaders and make an eternal impact in the lives of students. Students are reached,

equipped, sent and further trained to go out and replicate the model themselves in their spheres of influence.”

The eight-week program begins June 8. It is open to rising ninth graders through high school seniors.

Overseen by Gathering Place staff and led by a team of college interns, the program is focused on leadership devel-opment, mentoring and local community service.

With a moderate commitment level and at a cost of $325, it’s a great way to enjoy staying “on mission” during the summer months, Ramirez said.

Glynn Academy junior Robert Prescott spoke highly of his time as a junior intern.

“Participating in the junior internship was a transformative experience,” he said. “I would recommend it to any teenager in the Golden Isles.”

Internship. A full-time, paid internship available to juniors and seniors following an interview process, the Doulos Intern-ship is an immersive summer of growing in servant leadership.

Bridging the gap between the junior internship and the college internship, the Doulos program is a time of structured growth beginning with a team-building retreat. Throughout the summer interns receive focused teaching and training from area youth pastors and community leaders, participate in Bible studies and serve at a variety of professional job sites throughout the week.

Of course, for the students involved, it is mostly just fun. Junior Intern Jeremy Hol-lington said, “I just like hanging out with my friends and we have fun helping out.”

Justin Davidson, youth pastor at St. Si-mons Community Church, has consistently observed the positive impact of the Gath-ering Place on area youth. “What I love about the Gathering Place’s intern program is that through it I see students learn to love more and hate less, embracing what God wants to do in and through them.”

It’s an exciting and challenging option to ward off the potential boredom that often sets in a few weeks into summer vacation.

WHAT TO PACK

Summer camp secret #53: Ziploc bags are handy for more than just snacks.

Parents, if we can leave you with just one memorable piece of advice for the coming summer days, it is to buy Ziploc baggies in every size (and lots of black Sharpies). Not only are they handy for packing goldfish and raisins for your child to nibble on during the day, they’re also great for all the sundries your child will need in his or her travels this summer.

Like money. Sunscreen. Bug spray. Clothes. Wet swimsuits. You get the idea.

What else should you pack for your child? Well, read on for mother-tested-kid-approved ideas:

DAY CAMP

OVERNIGHT CAMPClothing – Same rules apply as for day camps, but be sure to ask if dressier clothes will be

Swimming – Swimming is a popular camp activity, even if the main purpose of the camp is some other sport, so pack a swimsuit or two, more than one pair of goggles, flip-flops, and towels if the camp doesn’t supply them.

Sports gear

Linens – If needed, pack sheets, pillowcases, a pillow, a blanket or sleeping bag, towels, and a laundry bag.

Sun protection – Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, along with strict instructions on when to

Toiletries – Pack whatever your child uses regularly. Purchase a small tote to carry items back and forth from the showers, and plastic toothbrush caps and soap containers to keep it all neat. Include some basic first-aid supplies, such as bandages or blister pads, and insect repellent. Find out the camp’s policy about prescription and over-the-counter medications your child may need. These often need to be kept and dispensed by camp medical staff.

Entertainment – Books, magazines, writing materials. Balls and frisbees and other portable outdoor toys. Check the camp’s policy on personal music players and electronic games before allowing your child to pack them.

Miscellaneous – Flashlight, water bottle, favorite snacks (if allowed).

Whether your child will be away for just one day or for several, include a little love note for encouragement when they need it. Hopefully, they’ll be having too much fun to miss you much, but it never hurts to remind them how much you love and miss them while they’re off having fun!

Trying to get children to read over the summer can be a tough chore, so Marshes of Glynn Libraries is bringing back its annual summer reading program to assist parents.

The Brunswick and St. Simons Island librar-ies are using a science theme this year to help make reading fun for the kids over the summer break, says Karen Lar-rick, program coordina-tor of Marshes of Glynn Libraries.

“The whole point of the summer reading program is to keep children reading all summer long,” she said. “When they stop reading, their reading level drops off, so we want them to maintain the level of read-ing they had at the end of the school year until the start of the next year.”

Performer Barry Stewart-Mann will host the first events of the program May 29 – “Fizzin Folktales” for elementary school students at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Simons Island Public Library, 530 Beachview Drive, St. Simons Island.

“I’m bored.”Those may be the two most unwelcome words a parent hears. But

hear them they do, especially during summer breaks in households where teens reside.

There seems to be plenty for younger kids to do. They can partici-pate in public or private recreation programs, attend day camps or enroll in various church Vacation Bible Schools.

Some children go away to residential camps for several weeks each summer and still others go with their families to vacation spots in the mountains or near lakes for the better part of the summer.

But for the 15- to 18-year-old, choices seem few.Sure, many young people have

jobs, but most of those are part-time.

There are plenty of hours in the day to volunteer for a local organization and perhaps gain some professional experience and insight into careers they might consider in the future. They can start applying for volunteer positions at some organizations now. For others, though, it may be too late, but it never hurts to inquire.

Morgan McElmurray, 16, is a volunteen at the Brunswick hospital of Southeast Georgia Health System and volunteers in the gift shop one afternoon a week. She began volunteering at the health system because she was considering a career in health care.

“I have volunteered in several different departments, but the gift shop is my favorite,” Morgan said. “I volunteer because I enjoy help-ing people. I also like meeting new people and volunteering.”

According to Kristin Doll, director of volunteer services at the health system, volunteens serve in various departments.

“They assist in areas such as maternity, guest services, gift shop, cancer care center, cafeteria,” Doll said.

Space is tight and slots are filled for this summer, but there’s always next year.

and 18 in age, in grades 9 through 12 and in good academic standing.

“Applicants are accepted at the beginning of each calendar year and 50 students are accepted at both the Brunswick and Camden campuses each summer,” she said.

Space is limited and the program is popu-lar so teens are encouraged to apply early each year.

“The students complete an initial inter-view and are then scheduled for an eight-hour orientation in June,” Doll said. “Stu-dents who have successfully completed the process volunteer for at least one four-hour shift per week during the summer and then during the school year if they choose.”

Some teens may prefer to spend their summers in the fresh air and sunshine.

Fort Frederica National Monument recruits youth every spring to participate in the Youth Conservation Corps. Once ac-cepted to the program, participants work on projects that include anything from cleaning the earthworks to boundary clearing.

Information from the National Park Ser-vice indicates the work will be outdoors and require physical challenges.

Open to teens in the age range of 15–18, , who will work a 40-hour week. The season runs for eight to 10 weeks, from the end of May until school begins again in August.

Loren Dittmar, a guidance counselor at Glynn Academy, says students have also found opportunities through The Gather-ing Place, The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, Mtn2Sea, the International

Seafarer’s Center and Manna House.Who says volunteering has to be a solo

activity? Groups of teens can be helpful to causes.

FaithWorks, an outreach ministry in

Brunswick, says there are plenty of things groups can do to help its mission.

“FaithWorks is always happy to work with local groups in helping them see the com-munity differently and to make a difference in the lives of others,” said the Rev. Wright Culpepper, executive director of FaithWorks. “During the spring and summer, we host about 25 groups who come to us from across the country and have them do various projects that help others.”

Culpepper says the emphasis is to promote local missions.

“Our hope is that people will slow down enough to look around and see that there are opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others right here at home,” he said.



Organize food drives. FaithWorks provides groceries to more than 1,000 people each month, so the food pantry always needs replenishing.

Textile recycling. FaithWorks keeps textiles despite the shape they’re in. Culpepper says every piece of cloth has value and the organization keeps tons of clothes out of landfills every year.

Neighborhood cookouts. There are some city areas where groups can grill chicken and burgers and use the meals to visit with the elderly, shut-ins and marginalized people in order to share love and build relationships.

Landscaping. Plenty of homes, vacant lots and other properties need sprucing up.

Light construction projects. Building handrails, shelving, painting and replacing rotten boards are just a few of the tasks people need assistance with.

Of course, FaithWorks also offers some more soli-tary volunteer opportunities.

“Individuals can volunteer to work in our office, food pantry, textile warehouse, knitting prayer shawls, writing notes of encouragement, helping people write resumés, and a host of other things,” Culpepper said.

Students and parents in the Golden Isles have a variety of options from which to choose when selecting an educational pro-gram to ensure learning continues during the summer break.

Marine biology and the coastal ecosystem are the main focuses of most of the camps.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Jekyll Is-land, has been offering its Sea Turtle Day Camp, for children 6 through 12, since 2008. That first summer the center held four ses-sions of the camp and a dozen or so children attended each session.

“Our program has now grown to seven sessions (each summer) with 20 children per session,” said Julie Hunt, administrative co-ordinator for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. “Since 2008, 483 children have participated in our summer camp program.”

Hunt says that campers participate in a variety of activities, including field-based

adventures, games and crafts.Each day, she said, focuses on a specific

aspect of sea turtle biology, conservation or the threats terrapins face on a daily basis.

“Additionally, they will explore the many habitats of Jekyll Island, from freshwater ponds to maritime forests, through tidal marshlands down to the beach and beyond, with the myriad of turtle species found in Georgia,” Hunt said, explaining that staff at the center works to help wildlife, save

endangered specials and protect the coastal environment.

“Our desire is to connect children of all ages to nature and use sea turtles to inspire their imagination and embrace lifelong con-

servation values.”Also on Jekyll Island, 4-H Tidelands Na-

ture Center offers an array of summer learn-ing opportunities, including a day camp. The center’s Discovery Day Camp is offered dur-

ing select weeks in June and July.According to Dawn Zenkert, Tidelands co-

ordinator, children can participate in a single day or sign up for several days. Themes vary by day.

“(Activities) include field trips, games, crafts and more,” she said.

Coastal Outdoor Adventures, owned by Brooks Good, operates several multi-day camps for youngsters ages 6 through 14. They include Shark Fest, Camp Village Creek and Junior Biologist Camp.

There are four sessions of Camp Village Creek and four of Junior Biologist Camp. Shark Fest offers 12 sessions on both St. Si-mons and Jekyll Islands.

Other themes, with single-day options are also available.

Youngsters attending Shark Fest will ex-

perience two days of fishing for sharks and other fish. The camp operates on Mondays and Tuesdays at Hampton Marina on St. Si-mons Island and Thursdays and Fridays at the Jekyll Marina.

Good says that campers have a great time learning about tackle and bait and how to “fight” the fish. Many times participants will compete against each other for which team

can nab the biggest catch.There are a variety of sharks in the coastal

waters, according to Good.“There are 16 different species of sharks

here,” he said. “Most of them are two-to-four-feet long, but every now and then we catch them bigger than six-feet.”

Catches of more than 20 sharks a day are not uncommon. But campers aren’t deplet-ing coastal waters. All sharks are released back into the water except for one.

“We keep one legal size shark to do a com-plete dissection and give the kids a full biol-ogy lesson,” Good said.

Sharks aren’t the only fish caught during the camp – whiting, summer trout and sting-rays are among the array of sea life to which campers are exposed.

Junior Biologist Camp is a five-day experi-

ence that provides a hands-on overview of marine science for kids. It meets at St. Si-mons Elementary and campers spend a lot of time on the beach learning about shrimp, crabs and seashells.

Camp Village Creek is a team effort among Coastal Outdoor Adventures, Southeast Ad-venture Outfitters and Kennedy Outfitters. During these sessions, campers will learn to kayak, fish from a boat, paddleboard and interact with coastal wildlife through hands-on marine and wildlife education. This camp meets at Village Creek Landing.

Good, a charter fisherman, tour guide and caterer, says the camps are his heart and soul.

“When you can do something you love to do and make a living at it, it’s a gift,” he said.

SPORTS CAMPS: Kids In Motion

Kids in the digital age face an array of flashing and beeping gizmos that serve their short attention

spans and hold their bodies in one mo-tionless place, but Allen Benner knows children will stay active and focused all summer long if you give them an old-fashioned toy they can bounce, kick, chase, throw and catch.

And that is how they will roll in the Children In Action Sports Club’s summer camp – a free Christ-centered series of nine four-day camps designed around a whole new ball game each week, from volleyball to softball to golf and flag rugby.

“I had a long career in retail, but no matter what toy came along, the No. 1 gift for children has always been some kind of a ball,” said Benner, club direc-tor. “Kids will always love to play with a ball and it gives us an opportunity to be a positive, healthy force in their summer experience.”

CIA’s summer camp series for kids ages 7 to 12 swings into action June 9-12 with a camp centered on ultimate disc, a field sport, at the organization’s headquarters, 145 Granville Nix Lane in Brunswick. The camp will run weekly, Mondays through Thursdays, throughout June and July, and feature a different sport each week.

Breakfast and lunch are provided, and Benner encourages youth from all cor-ners of the Golden Isles to join the fun.

Each day begins with a prayer break-fast and concludes at 12:30 p.m.

Parents can pick and choose among the programs or enter their children for all nine weeks.

The non-profit CIA is able to hold the camps for free through donations from local churches and business and com-munity leaders. The camp breakfast and lunches are available through the Glynn County Summer Nutrition Program.

Glynn County Recreation and Parks Department

The Glynn County Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring two ten-nis camps at Selden Park in June.

The first camp is for experienced play-ers and runs June 2-5; a camp for begin-ner and intermediate players follows June 16-19.

Both camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.

The camp fee is $135 per child and includes a visit to the Selden Park pool and a camp T-shirt.

The camp is run by tennis pros Paul Rausch and Mary Brooke-Kersey, who have a combined 30 years experience in instruction.

The advanced camp will focus on strategies and match play to improve skills for competitive tournament play, Brooke-Kersey said. The second camp will introduce players to the sport and help beginners gain needed confidence.

Many of the activities are designed to keep youths occupied, while others are something the entire family can enjoy together.

The St. Marys Aquatic Center opens for the summer May 3 and will remain open through Sept. 7.

The facility is staffed with Red Cross certified lifeguards at all times.
