On Monday evening the Year 11 2018 student leaders and I attended "A Conversation with Robin Scott”, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, at the Melbourne Town Hall. The meeting was hosted by the ECCV (Ethnic Community Council of Victoria). During the conversation we were asked to consider how we, in this challenging world, share the voice of multiculturalism, so that the community has empathy and understanding. It was suggested that the power is in the stories and that it is in advocacy. People spoke of the need to broaden the multicultural agenda relating to participation, education and employment support, that we cannot marginalise or demonise communities and that all need to be able to feel they belong. It was suggested that successful 'multicultural Victoria' means people can come together from anywhere in the world and can live peacefully, can contribute, can belong, can feel connected.

Congratulations to Ageliki Arkoudis, Sarah Lui and Lisa Tran for being excellent representatives of the College.

Reminders:There are no classes this coming Monday and Tuesday, but the Year 12 VCAA exams will continue at the College. We wish them well.

Thursday 8th November is a casual clothes day for our 2018 charities with a gold coin donation. Our Year 12 VCAL girls finish on Thursday, we wish them all the very best and will see them at the Graduation Dinner. There will be a Remembrance Day service next Friday at 11.00am and the student elections for 2019 will also take place. Student speeches have already begun in anticipation of the voting on 9th November.

The Year 11 exams commence on Wednesday 14th November, with a study day on Tuesday 13th November.

With best wishes for the coming week.

KC Stage Band at St. John Vianney's feteLast Saturday the girls of the KC Stage Band lit up the St John Vianney's fete with a great performance. Following the acts of SVJ's Got Talent was always going to be a challenge for any music group but the girls rose to the occasion. Performing classic big band charts like Count Basie's "Flight of the Foo Birds" and Duke Ellington's "Such Sweet Thunder" the girls entertained the big crowd with excellent ensemble playing and fine solos. It is lovely to hear the band playing with such confidence. They have improved enormously over this year.

As we farewell our Year 12s at the Jazz Night in November the "new" band is starting preparations for our performance at Generations In Jazz in Mount Gambier SA in May of 2019.

On Monday 29th October, our Year 10 Psycho Drama class headed to the Malthouse Theatre to perform in The Suitcase Series. Earlier, in Term 3 and 4, we were given a script to use as a stimulus on the topic of climate change. Most of Terms 3 and 4 we were given class time to work on our play, where everyone worked together as a group to develop ideas. Our performance was based off fairy tales, which helped to get the mes-sage across. On the day we watched six other schools across the State present their version of the play. It was great to see how all the other schools interpreted the script. Most of the other schools used part of the dialogue in the original script in their play, it was very different from how our ensemble interpreted the script. At the end of the day, we got to see a professional performance of Atomic. It was surely a wonderful, but quite stressful, experience for all of us.

Have you seen the new improved Library entrance?? It is beautiful and to help keep it looking that way we are asking girls to not put their lunch boxes or flasks on the bench. Girls are welcome to bring their empty containers into the library with them, but all food and drink are still not allowed inside the library. Thank you to all in advance for helping keep this space beautiful.

Hope - Living with Purpose

On the 25th of October, two Religion and Society classes ventured into the city to get a glimpse at how homeless people attemp to sustain themselves in an urban area. There, the Year 11 students of Killester were educated and told of various locations and groups who supported and assisted the homeless. We were also fortunate enough to dine at a restaurant called Crossways, a vegan/vegetarian restaurant with a set menu that was easily affordable. Whilst there with the comfort of my fellow peers, I was able to enjoy quite a delectable meal in a comforting atmosphere. The main goal of going to the city was to also support those in need of a little extra cash by purchasing a magazine called "The Big Issue" for $7.00. The vendors who sold us the magazines were so sweet, handing us the magazines with a tremendous smile on their faces. This day out in the city was immensely rewarding as I got to make someone else's day by doing something so small, that could potentially make their lives better.

Brigitte GarofaloRE Learning Area Leader

Year 11 Homelessness Excursion “The Big Issue”

Students had their final session for Joey’s Van last Monday and we thank the Parish of St Joseph’s and Margaret Miller, who coordinates the food van, for the opportunity to service the people of Dandenong. It is always a wonderful and humbling experience for students and teachers and allows us to live out the Gospel message of helping the most vulnerable in a positive way. Thanks to Kristin, Kayla, Angel and Martina who went on Monday.

Another great event was the “Sleepover” to raise awareness about the homeless. In the last week of Term 3 we had Ms Neville, Ms Galante, Mr Hickey and myself support thirty Year 11 and 12 students experience a sleepover in the Kennedy Hall, where we learnt about the causes of homelessness and we also looked at some of the ways they can be sup-ported. The student input was tremendous, as they ran much of the night, and showed great interest and enthusiasm for the experience.

Along similar lines, all Year 11s have done a “homelessness awareness” excursion over the past term where they observed homelessness in the city. Students ate at a restaurant aimed at the disadvantaged and then purchased a copy of “The Big Issue”, which is a magazine that is sold by people who have experienced homelessness or social difficulties. These experiences really open the eyes of students to how lucky they are, but also to the idea that everyone has dignity and deserves help. Thank you to all teachers and students who took part in these activities.

On Tuesday the 30th of October the Intermediate and Senior VCAL students went to the RSPCA, where they participated in an educational session about animal ethics and had a tour of the facilities. The students had been researching and discussing animal issues. The Intermediate VCAL students addressed the school community about the benefits of buying free range, rather than caged, eggs and successfully convinced the Hospitality Department to change their ways.

Some feedback from the VCAL students about their experience at the RSPCA:

'I learnt to be more cautious with what food I choose to eat' by Cheyenne'It made me happy because I found a cat that I may be adopting soon' by Angelina'I am excited because I learnt that I can volunteer at the RSPCA and help them out in 2019' by Caitlin'I learnt that the RSPCA don't take care of bugs' by Alana'It was interesting to hear the animal stories' by Antoinette'It was good' by Kessia'The RSPCSA genuinely love animals and care about their welfare' by Alyssa'It was interesting to learn about the adoption process' by Carmen

Kath WilmanVCAL Teacher

VCAL Excursion to the RSPCA

On Monday 29th October the Intermediate and Senior VCAL girls went to the RSPCA, Burwood, to learn about how to take care and treat animals properly. The day consisted of going around and taking a look at chickens, goats & horses. We also got the opportunity to feed some of them. Eventually we went on a tour and saw some cats, dogs and rabbits that were up for adoption for the public. We also met a beautiful, loving, ginger cat named Avocado. It was such a fun and educational excursion. We would definitely recommend this excursion, as it was extremely beneficial to our needs and helped us complete our outcomes.

Two facts that everyone should know: 1. The RSPCA stands for Royal Society Prevention of Cruelty of animals. 2. The RSPCA was founded to originally help horses back when horses were the main source of transport. Many of the workers weren’t treating horses right and so that’s how the RSPCA became a society for preventing cruelty to animals
