A remarkable lady lives on Kestral Park South Park South. Her name is Jayne Blair, and she is 102 years young. Jayne is a beautiful, energetic livewire who has 20/20 vision, drives her own car, walks, swims, and plays mahjong every Thursday. Jayne was raised in upstate NY, Binghamton to be exact. Her mother was a teacher before marriage: her father studied to be a lawyer, but never practiced. He ended up owning a Buick dealership with a partner. Of her early years, Jayne says matter-of-factly: “My family was very well off, and then lost it all after some bad investments. They were rich and then they weren’t.”

Jayne continued, “I had three sisters, and they were perfectly beautiful. I was attractive, but

they were beautiful!” The family had a summer house in Canada, where Jayne and her sisters first learned to swim in the icy waters of the St. Lawrence River. “As a young girl, I used to swim island to island in the St. Lawrence.” Today Jayne enjoys swimming in the warm summer waters of a Landings pool. This vivacious lady was to marry three times. Her first husband’s name was Fred Wobie. “I was too young for the first one, but we had a delightful daughter by the name of Marea, who now lives near Nashville. She had six children.” Newly divorced, Jayne went on to marry Malcolm Cushing McGrath, a 1936 Graduate of the Naval Academy. Mac was a fighter pilot on the Lexington

and Saratoga. His wing man was a flyer by the name of Butch O’Hare, whose father was the lawyer for Al Capone. Jayne remembers that dashing wing man fondly: “I was out at the Naval Air Station when Butch was there. He’d just gotten a new Cadillac Convertible and was sitting in it with the top down. I asked him: What do you think of when you’re flying?” Butch answered simply, “I want to be better than the best.” Butch certainly achieved that dream. In Jayne’s own words, “He was the one who dove down and sank a battleship in World War II. He died a hero’s death, of course. Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is named in his honor.”

The Siesta Key Independence Day fireworks display, organized by the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, has been an island tradition for the past 25 years. The first event was spurred as a tribute to the men and women who served in Desert Storm.

But now event organizers say that the upcoming 2016 display could be the last, unless a fundraising effort results in enough sponsorships and partnerships. The uncertain future comes as organizers are shifting to a new approach to raising funds to pay for the roughly $45,000 cost to put on the fireworks display.

During previous years, an annual July 4 VIP party was the “main donation raiser”

for the fireworks, said Mark Smith, chair of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce. On March 23, however, the chamber’s fireworks committee opted to not hold the VIP party in 2016. Several factors lead to that decision. Last year, the cost to organize the VIP party increased by about $9,000, after county officials required extra precautions to protect the new, improved Siesta Key Public Beach. Those extra steps included additional barricades and breathable matting meant to ensure that the new grass and sprinkler system was not damaged, said Alana Tomasso, volunteer chair of the fireworks committee and

general manager at Midnight Cove. “It is beautiful now,” Tomasso said of the upgraded Siesta Key Public Beach park. “We certainly didn’t want to do any harm to the new beach.” But the extra required steps came with a cost. Organizers also had to pay to rent chairs and tables, whereas in the past the event was held at pavilion picnic tables. In addition, a retention pond sits where the VIP party was held in the past, muddying the logistics for trying to put on the VIP party. “It is difficult to put on; the logistics at the beach are tough now,” Smith said. “Before it was easier.”

Single family homes in The Landings range from three-bedroom homes at around 2,000 square feet all the way up to larger homes upwards of 4,000 square feet. In addition to different sizes, “each home has its own character,” said Bill Whitman, L a n d i n g s H o m e o w n e r s Association Inc. president since 2008. “It is not a cookie cutter development.” Some of the more moderately-sized homes with less than 2,700 square feet offer unique features and the ideal location of The Landings with a more moderate price. Homes with three bedrooms and featuring a den have become a

desirable home on the market in the community, said Tara Lamb, a realtor with Michael Saunders & Company who specializes in The Landings. Single family homes under 2,700 square-feet that recently sold ranged in per-square-foot sales price — from $169 for an un-renovated home to $260 a square foot for a home with a den, ash wood vaulted ceilings and updated kitchen. The smaller homes don’t skimp on the enhancements, and some of the recent sales included features such as caged pools and paver patios, lush landscaping, and custom touches.

Newly elected LMA Pres. Larry Lawrence opened his first meeting by acknowledging the honor of working with such a capable Board of Directors and is looking forward to accomplishing a lot over the next year. He also thanked the former Board for leaving The Landings in such a sound position. Lawrence mentioned he hoped to fill the vacant committee chairman positions soon.

Among others, these included the Landscaping Committee as well as the Environmental Committee. A Board retreat has been scheduled for April 30 to educate new and seasoned Board members. Lawrence urged all Board members, Presidents Council members to attend the Annual Newcomers Reception on April 3. This is jointly hosted by the LMA and The Landings Racquet Club. The first of three educational orientation sessions was held during tonight’s meeting.

FINANCE REPORT New Finance committee chair, Dick Bayles announced he was going to present the financial report as a rolling forecast on what he expects the end of the year will be based on variances to date. There were two significant variances in January related to wall painting and fountain maintenance.

Another significant variance concerned the security services vendor. The vendor overbilled the LMA and as a result, owes $23,500.

SAFETY AND SECURITY C h a i r m a n N e i l G o l d m a n began his report by announcing a joint-recommendation by the Executive committee and Security committee to change security services providers. Many issues of contention were involved in making this decision, including clerical errors, overtime, payroll, and benefits etc. Goldman’s committee received four bids for the contract and subsequently narrowed the bid process to one vendor. The recommended vendor agreed to hire three key security personnel who have worked at The Landings for some time, and will be leaving Universal.

I read with interest the letter submitted by Carol Paradis on the proposed idea of an observation tower on the nature trail and would like to respond. At the outset, let me say that I believe a spectrum of opinion is always useful and sometimes crucial. In Paragraph one, the author claims that a precise height of the observation deck was not provided (legitimate concern) . The author then wanders into how some state parks have high towers and she then concludes that the state parks are different from our small trail. I could not agree more with the observation that our nature trail is different from a state park. In the second paragraph , an image is conjured - of philanders’ with binoculars nefariously invading your privacy. This fear , in my judgement, is existential at best as the height / orientation of the observation tower, has not yet been established. Privacy is a legitimate concern and would/should be addressed. The third paragraph cautions against run away costs . In my opinion,the LMA board, is handsomely “frugal” and I seriously doubt they would authorize anything frivolous . Furthermore, a precise bid has not yet been requested. (to date there is but an estimate from a reliable vendor which was quite reasonable and represents less that 0.035% of the adopted budget). The next paragraph is my favorite - as the author pines about the virtues of a ground level life, she questions whether anything might be gained from an elevated perspective. I would argue that people have been clamoring for elevated views for centuries. The View from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, breath taking views from mountain tops, the view from a plane or a hot air balloon, a skybox the list goes on and on and on. It’s called a panoramic overview and it can be quite thrilling ( or at the very least - pleasant). It seems that whenever something new is proposed , those who “like things just the way they are “ offer resistance with a series of existential counter points. While frustrating, I must admit that opposing conversation, usually adds something to the mix and often enhances the end result. Landings Resident, Frank Pipers

Speeders Beware... Is certainly very appropriate, BUT I would like to make a few other suggestions: 1. Pedestrians should/must walk on correct side of road ONLY. 2. Pedestrians should not walk more than two abreast. 3. It would be very helpful if some reflecting appliance could be used late at night. 4. There are one or two sections of Landings Blvd that would benefit by few more street lights.

Suggestion...on right of your article it says “Please drive safely”. How about “Please walk safely“???

At its regularly scheduled meeting, the Board approved external painting of residences on Kestral Park Way South and Peregrine Point Way. It also approved the removal of a dead palm tree on Pine Harrier Drive, and landscaping changes

on Kestral Park Lane, Landings Boulevard and Kestral Park Way South. It requested a sample for a replacement roof on Peregrine Point Circle North. Letters will be sent to three owners requesting final plans and a schedule for completion

The Landings Free College The Landings Free College - no homework, no term papers, no grades, no credits, and no tuition – continues to be a venue where the audience learns interesting things, usually on Thursday afternoons at 2 p.m. Don Leidel and Katie Leidel spoke to us on March 31 about Vienna, where Don served in the foreign service and which they recently visited. And in the evening of Friday, April 1st , to end the season, a tribute was mounted to the late Sid Wenokur, very appropriately the great film “The Third Man” starring Orson Welles. Set in post-WWII Vienna, this film was suggested by Don Leidel and complemented his presentation.

President’s ColumnAs I am writ ing this

month’s column spring is happening. The last vestiges of winter are being shed, old leaves are down, new ones are sprouting, shrubs are starting to grow, flowers blooming, winds calming, birds singing and The Landings lusciously greening. Although we are spared the harshness of “real winter”, we can still feel the excitement in the air as spring begins-to many the most wonderful time of year!

EXCITING EVENTSThe annual new resident’s

reception is scheduled for April 3. This event is co-hosted by LMA and LRC and is where all those joining The Landings in the past year are welcomed. It is a nice opportunity for the new residents to become familiar with LMA and LRC officials and the activities of these organizations.

In late April the LMA Board will have a retreat at which time we will undertake “team bui lding for the new board, examine how performance can be improved and engage in “visioning”. This will hopefully enhance the effectiveness of your association.

SECURITYSERVICE

AGREEMENTDespite repeated efforts

by our Security and Safety Committee, there has been a failure to perform by our existing security service contractor. Many of the deficiencies have been all too apparent to the residents, but even more have been behind the scenes, but equally egregious. The Committee has been working diligently o v e r t h e p a s t s e v e r a l months to obtain a contract with a competent, reliable contractor. At the time of this writing our attorney has approved a proposed contract and expectations are that the contract will be

presented to the board for approval in April. This will be a significant step forward.

LMA WEBSITE The Communicat ions Committee is busi ly at work re-invigorating the LMA Website. To date a lot of effort has been put into improvement in the “external” portion of the website. This primarily is the Marketing Component. T o d a y t h e s t a t i s t i c i s something approximating 90% of the people searching for homes access websites to learn about/evaluate options. It is important to keeping The Landings in the forefront of Sarasota communities to have a websi te that entices prospective Florida residents to The Landings. This is a smart and essential investment to maintain our home values. Soon the website group will turn their attention to the “internal website”. The component of the website which will enable Landins to access the vast array of our community activities and where Landins will be able to engage and communicate with each other. T h e C o m m u n i c a t i o n Committee will be hosting “pizza parties” for a “show and tell” on using the site. This will be a great opportunity to learn how the website can make Landings living even more enjoyable. Watch for the dates.

RADAR SPEEDDETECTOR

TRIAL R e p o r t e d l y t h e t r i a l is going well. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response and many have observed a voluntary reduction in speed. Ideally that will be an ongoing effect. However, this approach must be accompanied by the other users of our road/walkway doing their part as well. One of the most bizarre

illustrations of not taking personal responsibility was recently mentioned to me: a driver noticed a person walking in the road toward her moving car. The walker was looking down so the driver stopped. The pedestrian—TEXTING-- walked right into the car!! The glib saying applies: “you can’t prevent stupid”. Unfortunately there are many other hazardous situations occurring all too often. If we are on the road/walkways, we must use good judgement.

KESTRALPARKWAY

NORTH INTERSECTION

Thanks to the Roads and Maintenance Committee this problematics intersection will get new vivid, thermoplastic (vs just paint) striping, with raised directional arrows, posts with bright reflectors to provide lane guidance and neon colored signage advising not to block the roadways. R e c e n t l y t h e r e h a v e b e e n d i s c u s s i o n s w i t h the county traffic officials to explore making even more improvements to the intersection. They were familiar with the history of trying to improve the intersection and expressed concern about the congestion. The county representatives were encouraging to our efforts to take corrective measures.

ROAD PAVING The following roads will be paved this spring/summer: Kestral Park Circle, Heron Way and all of the Treehouse roads. Work is expected to begin in May (dependent upon contractor availability) and take approximately two months.

MISCELLANEOUS Several have inquired about the empty space created

by the removal of trees at the corner of Landings Boulevard and Heron Way. This area was infested with Brazilian Pepper Trees-a very fast growing invasive species that required constant pruning and were crowding out other much more preferable native species. White Mangrove has been planted to replace the Brazilian Pepper Trees. F i r e - b u s h a n d M u h l y Grass have been installed to provide screen for the area. The Fire-bush should be approximately five feet in height by mid-summer. It is unfortunate that sometimes re-landscaping temporarily

leaves an unsightly area, but it is essential that we continue to make improvement for the longer term. It has been mentioned that there are several areas where shrubs need to be pruned in order to provide visibility of cars and pedestrians. Please report such areas to Joe Hennessy, LMA Landscape Chair ([email protected]), and he will have the situation rectified. We are about to begin analyzing the “Residents Survey” which was mailed several weeks ago. If you haven’t sent your response, please do so ASAP. There is still time. Thank you. • Languages? I’m taking Spanish in school.

• Do you play an instrument? I play the cello in the school orchestra.

• Is living here a lot different than Michigan? It’s hotter here and doesn’t snow. The Landings is fun but I miss the snow. You can go swimming here sometimes and you can’t do that in Michigan in winter.

• What’s your favorite movie or TV show? I don’t watch much TV, but when I do, I watch Castle. You get to solve mysteries.• Do you have a favorite sport? I like baseball (used to play once a

week) and flag football but I’m not doing anything this year because of the school transition. I might try rowing next year.

• Favorite team? Detroit Tigers because I’m from Plymouth, Michigan.

• What do you do in your spare time? I like driving my motorcycle (minibike cruiser) with friends. It can go about 20MPH. In summer, we play “ghost in the graveyard.” (it’s like playing tag in the dark). I also enjoy riding around the neighborhood on my long board (skateboard). We usually go skiing once a year too.

• What’s your favorite food? Mac ‘n’ cheese or spaghetti

• What kind of music is on your playlist? I like all different kinds of music.

• What do you want to be when you grow up? Maybe an astronomer because I really like space.

• If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’d be an eagle because you can fly around.

• What’s your favorite color? Light blue

• Favorite movie? Star Wars. I’ve seen them all but the new one is my favorite.

• If you could get rid of one bad thing in the world, what would it be? Global warming is pretty bad.

• If you were President for the day, what would you do? I would start a counter-terrorism campaign.

• What is one food that you would tell your parents to not make again? Cooked spaghetti squash isn’t very good.

• What is the biggest problem today for young people? Bullying. Pine View doesn’t seem to have a problem with it but bullying is a big issue. Some other schools do.

In April, The Landings will be changing the company that provides the security staff at the Main Gate and for our night-time patrol. Residents will see some changes, but our three primary faces will remain the same. Jimmy, Jordan and Augie will be working for the new

provider and will remain at The Landings. On another note, the LMA Board is asking residents to advise them of any areas in The Landings that have limited visibility for vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic to see each other. Perhaps some of these areas can be fixed

with as simple a solution as cutting back some landscaping to allow better visibility. If you know of any areas within The Landings that can potentially be made more safe by facilitating better visibility please let someone on the Board know where that area is.

The renovation of The Landings’ external website is nearing completion. The Communications Committee has been working very diligently in an effort to make the site more attractive and user friendly. In the interim, we created a temporary new domain name so that we could work on the redesign of the website while keeping the current website up and running.

We have made the new external site more visually attractive and user-friendly. It is now much easier to access the pages, the font is easier to read, the photos, most of which were contributed by Landings’ photographers, are stunning. Soon we will be changing the new domain name back to the original domain name thelandingsofsarasota.com so that everyone can continue accessing the external site just as they have in the past.

Thus far our efforts have been concentrated primarily on the external website, which was designed original ly for the

consumption of the general public. Its purpose was, and continues to be, to “show off” The Landings; to give those outside The Landings community a chance to see what a great community we have here. The new external site will be functional very shortly. Once we get this site up and running, we will turn our efforts to the redesign of the internal website. This site will have its own separate domain name, and will only be accessible to residents of The Landings. In the near future the committee will be running seminars and pizza parties in order to familiarize Landings residents with the new site. The internal website will belong to you, The Landings residents, so please let us know what your interests are and what YOU would like to see featured on these pages. Jim Mangold, a 28 year resident of The Landings, passed away last April. An article appeared in the June issue of The Landings Eagle describing Jim’s interest in tennis and butterfly collecting. His unique encased collection of butterflies is perhaps one of the most extensive available. Jim’s wife Divina is considering selling the collection. Upbeat In The Face Of Cancer Jack and J i l l Late Stage Cancer Foundation (JAJF) is an inspirational organization. Its founder, Jon Albert, lives right here on Siesta Key. In 2010, Jon was honored as the Humanitarian of the Year. In 2011 he received the Avis National Spirit award at Yankee Stadium. In 2015, he was the recipient of U.S. Travel’s National Inspiration Award. J o n w a s m o t i v a t e d t o establish JAJF in 2006 after losing his wife, Jill to cancer. She was just 45, while their children, Jake and Jamie, were only 11 and 13. Through this heart-wrenching experience, Jon realized the power and importance of creating positive, cherished, lasting memories as a family while there is time together; good, fun times near the end which kids will truly treasure throughout their lives. Children facing the imminent loss of their young Mom or Dad to cancer are the ones being served by JAJF. For a ten year old to lose her Mom; or a fifteen year old to lose his Dad, these

kids are losing their heroes….their security blankets at such a vulnerable age. Through this remarkable, one of a kind non-profit, the family is given a prescribed timeout from cancer, time to get away, play together and build beautiful, indispensable memories…while they can. These fabulous, all-expense paid trips are called WOW! Experiences® and last typically 4-5 days. However, the photographs and recollections are diamonds that last forever. JAJF provides each family a beautiful family photo album and family portrait upon their return. You can’t create memories with Mom or capture pictures with Dad once they are gone. April Fool’s Day was the last of our prime season events. The tennis tomfoolery began at 3 p.m. followed by dinner at 5 p.m. O n t h e f o l l o w i n g Sunday, the annual CANUKUS tennis matches between players from the US and from Canada/United Kingdom will

begin at 10:30. Later that day, the Club will host the annual LMA/LRC Newcomers Reception at 5:00. Newcomers to The Landings since last April should have received invitations. If you did not, please come anyway. Several members have inquired over the past months about our ability to install a Pickle Ball court. When we were laying out the space to be used for the new maintenance shed, we tried to fit one with the smallest possible side clearances in; but the property lines and terrain available won’t accommodate one, even with no maintenance shed. So, short of replacing an existing tennis court, a Pickle Ball court isn’t possible. For those of you leaving in April for northern climes, have an enjoyable season, and I look forward to seeing you later this year.

The new maintenance building will be a nice addition to our facility both aesthetically and functionally. The other big projects scheduled for later this year are replacing the Lakeside Clubhouse roof and installing new drains on the inside of the tennis court

fences. This will allow us to dress up the areas around the perimeter of the courts. Several new Wilson demo racquets have arrived and are ready for you to play-test them. If you fall in love with one, let me know your grip size and I will special order it from Wilson. They normally arrive three days later. If you have your eye on a racquet from a different company, please let me know what it is. I can still order

it for you and probably at a lower price. While everyone is still in town, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask you to update your contact information with us. Please let me know if your local or northern address has changed, emails, home or cell phone numbers, etc. It seems we have a lot of disconnected phone numbers in our records. If you are seasonal, it would be good to have your contact info for up north as well. Members come in regularly looking for ways to reach their friends throughout the year. Please mark your calendars for our Annual Memorial Day BBQ on Monday, May 30th. This is usually our largest event of the year. Last year we had 147 people attend including 32 military veterans. It will be the normal menu of hot dogs and hamburgers with all the side dishes. As always, wartime military veterans will be complimentary. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Tennis Pro Shop in late April.

Great tennis weather for the St. Patrick’s Day Round Robin. Fun times on the courts followed by a delicious dinner of traditional Irish fare. Thanks to the folks who helped coordinate the festivities and to our in-house photographer, Paul, who took time from his work out in the fitness center, to come by and take some pictures of the event. And thanks to those who joined in the fun.

There is only one tour given each Wednesday, so please be on the front porch of the Mansion a few minutes before 10:00 a.m. Dogs on leash are welcome at Phillippi Estate Park and the 60-acre grounds have wonderful shoreline paths for walking, bird watching, photography and painting. |The “Kitchen Ladies” RecipeRuss’s Treehouse Famous Kale Salad

RUSS GOLDEN and SUSIE brought this dish to enjoy with their friends living among the lush gardens of the Treehouses. Russ said, “This salad is fail safe, you can’t make a

mistake, if you had to add or subtract ingredients, it still tastes great!”Ingredients: Serves 6-8 - ½ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice ( 3 to 5 lemons) - 1 ¾ cups extra virgin olive oil - 5 garlic cloves crushed - 12 to 15 oz. washed and dried kale leaves with stems removed - 1 ¾ cups grated parmesan - 2 ½ cups sliced almonds - 1 ¼ tsp kosher salt Prepare:1. Toast almonds to taste2. Combine lemon juice, salt, olive oil and garlic in a bowl. Mix and let sit for an hour or two, to let the garlic steep.3. Cut or tear kale into small bite size pieces, remove the stems first. 4. Place kale in a large salad bowl, cover with cheese and almonds.5. Remove garlic cloves from dressing6. Pour a portion of dressing over salad and toss, do the taste test for more or less dressing, also salt to taste. Optional: more kale and dressing mixed at this point makes delicious leftover salad for the next day or two (unlike lettuce). Keep refrigerated.

The Amazing Jayne BlairSince Jayne’s father had

owned a Buick dealership, Jayne always loved to drive. “I would drive cross country to meet my husband when his ship came in at a faraway port.” She often took her mother with her on these cross-country expeditions.

T h e M c G r a t h ’ s w e r e married for 52 years and had two children. The eldest, Cynthia, lives in Virginia; the youngest, Ellen, was originally misnamed on her birth papers. Born at the Naval Hospital, the tiny infant had mistakenly been named “Elmer”: it took some major shenanigans to get that paperwork corrected. Ellen passed away recently, a sad moment in Jayne’s life.

Mac McGrath became a naval Commander, and—as the mother of three girls—Jayne lived the life of an officer’s wife. Of those years, she says: “In the beginning it was a lot harder than it is now, because if you had a skipper who was not very

nice, it filtered into the home.” Mac stayed in the navy for 17 years. He left 3 years short of retirement to take a try at a dream job, which dissolved into nothingness . Jayne unexpectedly found herself having to go to work. Upbeat person that she is, Jayne found she really enjoyed it! “My first job was a nifty fun job. I went to work for Thomas Edison’s Voice Writer Department. My boss was a Vice President. I learned shorthand and stuff, and became his Executive Secretary. When the next man down moved, up, I became his Executive Secretary. Not long after that, my second boss left and I was the one who moved up. I had my own secretaries, my own office, and I was a member of the Export Managers Club in NYC. There were 700 men and 2 women.” This impressive achievement all took place over six decades ago! Jayne smiled: “They sent

me to the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Fortunately, languages are easy for me, so I could speak Spanish pretty well and also a little French and German.” Later, Jayne went into real estate. “I was 17 years a realtor. This is where I made most of my money.” Jayne and Mac were to live all over the place, but in 1981, they started spending summers on Bird Key, and eventually moved here. Life became progressively more difficult. Mac had developed Alzheimer’s, and was deteriorating. It was then that Jayne called in a promise made to her some 40 years earlier. Jayne had long ago met Richard Hutchings Blair who was Captain of a destroyer, the James C. Owens. Richard was a true Virginian gentlemen and a 1932 graduate of the Naval Academy. They had first met, decades ago, when they were both married to other people,

and she the mother of three girls. Richard had no children. Although instantly drawn to each other, these were very responsible people. Of their blossoming friendship, Jayne said: “I was attracted to him, and he to me, but we did nothing about it.” Richard, however, said one fateful thing that Jayne would never forget: “If you ever need anything, call me.” 45 years later, when Mac no longer recognized his wife of more than a half-century, Jayne picked up the phone and called Richard. She knew full well that Richard had lost his wife a decade before. A champion golfer, Richard lived north of San Diego on a golf course. Jayne called him on a Tuesday and said, very simply, “I need help!” Upon hearing the details, Richard responded, “I’m making a reservation for you at a hotel near my home. The reservation will be for Friday.” Jayne packed her bag and took

a plane. The couple reunited, and it was exactly as if they had never been apart. Jayne saw Richard many times while Mac was still alive. Sometimes she went to California, and sometimes he came to Sarasota. “I would never have left my husband. But after he died, Richard and I were married. The two of us were lucky to be so happy!” Richard and Jayne hunted for a home in The Landings. “I took one look, and that was it!” Kestral Park South has been her home ever since. Richard passed away a few years ago, and Jayne lives cheerfully on. She still drives her car and has helpers come in daily for several hours. Having played bridge all her life, she has recently learned to play mahjong. “I’m not a super player. I’m not a bad player. But I want to be a good player.” Now 102, the vivacious and lovely Jayne Blair is indeed an inspiration!

The Wild Orchid Man in the Ghost Orchid SwampBy Robert C. Manteiga

On Fr iday, March 19 , Botanist and orchid specialist for Selby Botanical Gardens, Stig Dalström and filmmaker, Darryl Saffer presented one of their documentary films, “Wild Orchid Man in the Ghost Orchid Swamp,” before an appreciative crowd at the Landings Racquet Club. This is one of a number of documentary films on which Dalström and Saffer have collaborated. Others include “Wild Orchid Man in the Mountains of the Amazon,” “In the Land of the Great White Bear,” filmed in Manitoba, Canada, and “Journey to Machu Picchu, filmed in Peru and Ecuador. “Wild Orchid Man in the Ghost Orchid Swamp” focuses on Dalström’s search for a rare varietal called the “ghost orchid,” considered to be an endangered species. The film takes us deep into the Florida Everglades. Through Saffer’s lens, we, the audience, are made to feel as if we are right

there, accompanying Dalström on this marvelous journey, as he points out to us the variety of orchids that have managed to flourish in this incredible ecosystem as well as the many birds and animals that still populate it. An animated discussion

followed the film. Dalström pointed out that it is not only his intention to discover and study new orchid varieties, but to protect and preserve them for the benefit of future generations. I have to admit that, as a plant lover, it was disturbing for me to hear

that, despite the efforts of the Florida National Parks Service, a number of these rare white ghost orchids have gone missing over the past few years, prompting park rangers to cancel a number of public tours to the area.

A board member related the details of two speeding incidents he experienced recently and asked for an update of where the board stood regarding the speeding program implementation. Goldman responded by stating the first day of the contract was due to begin in less than a week. Practice sessions revealed speeding is an issue in the Community. Landing residence made the following recommendations and suggestions.

1. Pedestrians should wear reflective gear at night.

2. Pedestrians should walk in a single file in narrower areas.

3. Bikers should ride with traffic, and walkers should walk againsttraffic.

4. A walk-through of the community is needed to identify landscaping that needs to be cut back to ensure better visibility.

Goldman ended his report by announcing the new security cameras are in place and gate repairs to the north and main gates are completed. Repairs to the south gate will be completed soon.

DRAINAGE New committee chair , Michael Knupp reported the shared-expense project to install a new drainage system on the east side of Peregrine Pt Way will begin soon. A contract for the reconstruction of the storm sewer inlet at Landings Boulevard and Landings Court was awarded to Professional Concrete Inc. Finally, bids are being solicited for a system to eliminate standing water in the driveway at 1684 Peregrin Point Dr.

LAKES New Lakes chair, Michael Knupp reported all the lakes have been treated recently for problems with algae blooms. As a cost saving measure, LED lights will be installed to illuminate several additional lake fountains.

ROADS The Roads commit tee reported excellent progress being made on first phase of the multiyear road repaving project. Repaving is still expected to begin near the end of April or early in May.

2. Residents leaving the Carriage Houses will notice improved visibil i ty. The hedge at the western tip of the gatehouse island and Landings Boulevard was trimmed.

3 . Dead shrubs and a declining Indian Hawthorne were removed from the north monument and replaced by other foliage.

MAINTENANCE Maintenance Committee chair David Jacaruso, reported the sign replacement program is continuing. New road striping will be added to Kestral Parkway North, as well as some interior roads. Old or damaged reflectors will also be replaced.

FORWARD PLANNING

Forward Planning chair, Michael Knupp reported his committee is in the process of compiling the results of the demographic survey. The results will be used as informational material at the directors retreat in April and also to refine some parts of the Forward Plan.


July 4 Fireworks Continued from cover story

“We needed to find a new model,” Smith told the Eagle, “so we are shooting for sponsorships.”

The consensus of organizers has been to make the fireworks “more of a community event, and not just a Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce event.”

The chamber has begun seeking partners from groups such as the Siesta Key Village Association (SKVA), which has already agreed to contribute $5,000, and organizations such as Visit Sarasota County. They are also seeking sponsorships from local businesses, families, and individuals who would like to see the July 4 tradition carried on. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor can contact the Siesta Chamber of Commerce, Tomasso said.

Sponsors will receive a preferred viewing area and reserved parking (which will be limited to first come, first serve), Tomasso said. The chamber worked with the

county to set aside the parking spaces that will be reserved for sponsors. The Chamber’s annual Poker Tournament is coming up the first week of June, and money raised goes directly to the fireworks show, Tomasso said. The chamber will be coming out with information about registering for the event.

Beyond 2016,an unknown future

Smith and Tomaso told the Eagle that the fireworks committee has formulated a plan they hope will allow organizers to raise the funding needed to make the 2016 fireworks happen. But the fate of the fireworks beyond that is unknown. “We feel comfortable we can put on this year’s event, but if it doesn’t look like we can raise the money for the following year, we are going to have to stop doing it,” Smith said. “We believe we will be able

to achieve the goal this year,” Tomasso added. “The concern is for the upcoming years,” she said. Tomasso however, remains hopeful that the fireworks won’t end in 2016. “Looking down the road, it will always be a challenge to raise the funds,” Tomasso said. “I’m optimistic because I am counting on the community to pull through.” The fireworks have become an anticipated event. “It’s been going on for 25 years, and folks enjoy it,” Smith told the Eagle. “I have heard some folks coordinate their vacations so they are staying on the beach for the fireworks.” At the Siesta Key Village Association (SKVA) board meeting March 15, there was some good news. The association’s board voted to set aside $5,000 in sponsorship. Wendall Jacobsen, president of the SKVA board of directors, said losing the fireworks would be a big loss for the

island, resulting in visitors who come to the island on July 4 to seek another venue to watch the fireworks. “That would mean a loss of several thousands of dollars in sales for the merchants on the Key,” Jacobsen said. “SKVA has always donated financially for the Siesta Key fireworks, just at a smaller amount,” Jacobsen said. “We voted to increase the amount to $5000 this year because we feel it is a very important event for our community. We were

very disappointed to hear of the financial burden caused by the Counties extremely high fees they charged the Chamber last year. As of press time, the chamber also planned to request a partnership from the SKA at the group’s next meeting in April. The chamber has requested that Sarasota County officials look into the possibility of reducing some of the fees and costs to put on the event.

Whitman and his wife moved to The Landings in 2002 from Wilton, Connecticut. “For us it was the location,” he said, noting the central location of The Landings within a short drive of Siesta Key, stores, the hospital, and downtown. “We are ten minutes from everywhere.”

Whitman, who walks every morning for three miles, said the mature live oaks, laurel oaks, pines and other trees, were another draw. “We just love The Landings,” he told the Eagle.

The first phase of single-family homes in The Landings were constructed in 1984 to 1986 by several builders. Whitman lives in one of the smaller homes built during that time. It was constructed in 1986 and has 2,450 square feet of living area. When Whitman and his wife were looking at purchasing the home, his gaze was drawn to the Brazilian Cherry wood floors, lots of sliding glass doors, and the working fireplace. “We walked in the house, and it was like an oasis,” Whitman said. The home has a courtyard in the backyard, a unique feature that helped clinch the purchase.

Whitman said the friendships he and his wife have made over the years are probably the greatest amenity of the community.

Over the years, many of Whitman’s neighbors have updated the interiors of their homes. “Plans for landscaping upgrades have to be approved by the association,” he said.

The Landings community offers a nature trail to the gazebo on the Intracoastal Waterway. Optional membership to the Landings Racquet Club available with fitness center, clubhouse, activities, har-tru tennis courts, professional coaches and pro-shop.

Lamb said “Buyers look to The Landings for everything Whitman was seeking — excellent location, mature landscaping, custom built homes, family neighborhood and close-knit caring community.” “Of the single-family homes sold this past year, the majority have been updated and well-maintained with inviting curb appeal,” Lamb said. But some buyers may look for what Lamb calls “opportunities” — home that are in need of renovating and updating, allowing the new residents to design the style and open floor plan they want. Buyers often budget a minimum of $100,000 for updating when purchasing these homes. Homes under 2,700 square feet comprise a segment of the single-family homes in The Landings.

Current listings and recent sales:

As of press time, two of the smaller homes were listed on the market: • A three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath foreclosure is listed for $564,900. The home has 2,647 square feet. The listing price comes out to $213 a square foot. It is freshly landscaped with a pool. The home features a den and a bright, open floor plan. It has two new AC units and wood tiles in the den. • A three bedroom, two bath home was listed for $509,000. The home, at 2,112 square feet, has an updated kitchen with cherry shaker cabinets with Granite counter tops, tile back splash, and stainless appliances. The home has a large pool with new Crystal Crete surface and a new AC system. The listing price comes out to $241 a square foot.

Seven homes under 2,700 square feet sold over the past year. The sales include: • An un-renovated three bedroom, two and a half bath home sold for $340,200 in February, 2016. The home is 2,364 square feet, and the sale came out to $169 a square foot. According to Zillow.com and the Sarasota County Property Appraiser, a mortgage trust sold the home via an online marketing auction. • A three bedroom, two bath home sold for $375,000 in June, 2015. The home is 2,112 square feet, and the sale came out to $207 a square foot. • Also in June, 2015, a 2,499 square foot, three bedroom and two-and-a-half bath home sold for $599,000. The sale came out to $240 a square foot. The front of the home features a brick circular driveway and lush landscaping. According to the listing, the spacious great room has a traditional feel enhanced by the high ceilings, wood burning fireplace and French doors leading out to the paver patio and caged pool. The home has an eat-in kitchen as well as formal dining room, and the master suite opens to the pool. • A 2,068 square foot, three bedroom and three bathroom home sold for $490,000 in October, 2015. The sale came out to $260 a square foot. The home also has a den. The home features an updated kitchen and a large screened lanai and private pool and spa surrounded by large fenced back yard, according to MLS. The home also features an open great room floorplan with ash wood vaulted ceilings, fireplace, moldings and skylights.

Marie SelbyBotanical Gardens

Situated on beautiful Sarasota Bay in downtown Sarasota, Selby Gardens is a botanical paradise featuring one of the finest collection of epiphytes in the world, including orchids, bromeliads, and ferns.

For those unfamiliar with the term epiphytes, these are plants that grow on other plants and trees without harming them, while drawing moisture and nutrients from the air.

Selby Gardens was originally

the home of Marie Selby, who wanted to create an oasis to where she could escape. Today it has nearly doubled in size and features 12 buildings, including 7 greenhouses , the Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden, bamboo garden, banyon groves, succulent garden, fern garden, koi shop, gift shop, and cafeteria. Selby Gardens is funded through the generosity of its donors and members. They sponsor a number of events throughout the year including horticultural and

art exhibitions, plant sales, concerts, and holiday events. The gardens are open to the public daily from 10 to 5. Selby Gardens sponsored a marvelous orchid exhibit in the Conservatory. The exhibit ran through March 27th. My wife and I were there recently and, of course, I had my trusty camera with me. Here are some of the fruits of my labor.
