Day 1: 19th March 2019

8:00-8:30 Registration and arrival of participants.

8:30-8:45 Master of Ceremonies Mr. Soukanya Manivanh officially opened the workshop, introducing

the various representatives in the room, including Mr. Somsy Southiving, Dr. Ka Salermsouk, Mr. Somboun

Masouvanh, the representative from DVV International, the Representative from the Vientiane Capital

Department of Education and Sports, Dr. Silitone Sacklorkham and technical staff representatives from

SEAMOE CED. The objectives of the workshop were also introduced.

8:45-9:00 A NFEDC Informational video located at (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo4-BloHZYs)

was played for participants.

9:00-9:10 Mr. Somboun Masouvanh, the Lao Representative for the National Commission for UNESCO,

MoES gave opening comments about the project and the importance of Education for Sustainable

Development. Other examples of workshops and initiatives taken around the world including in Japan were

given regarding the successes and outcomes that they have seen. He spoke of ESD being the complex

development of three pillars: economic, environment and social. He spoke of if one factor develops too much

that it can cause a bad effect and not be sustainable. For, example if the economy develops more than other

factors it can result in the environment being destroyed such as through weather changes as a result of

human activity. This is one reason why ESD can be used to develop without having negative effects on the

next generation and having their community participating. For example, a rural village in Japan maintain

sustainable living in their villages through not having too many factories. In addition to this, to keep as natural

as possible they produce food by themselves. It was mentioned that the Japan government ran a sustainable

goal for 10 years from 2005 to 2015 and set another futher goal for 2016-2030.

9:10-10:00 Dr. Ka Salermsouk the General Director of the Department of Non-Formal Education gave

some ideas before the official opening ceremony in which he said that the 2030 vision, strategy 2025 and

the 5 years ‘Education and Sports Development Goal’ were implemented to expand the mental content of

the SDGs.

He gave a brief overview of his hope for the workshop over the next four days, including an outline of the

goals of the workshop and what he hoped would be achieved and learnt, he also noted that we should

specifically work with the 4th goal of the SDGs before then officially opening the meeting. He further spoke

of examples in Sweden ESD, and the MSDs. He further explained the history behind the SDGs and that there

will be five-year mark in 2020. He also spoke on the topic of life-long learning and various projects that have

been undertaken in Laos over the years and the support that DVV International has provided to the NFEDC.

Finally he mentioned about ‘Out of School Children and Youth (OOSCY)’ and the “Nobody Left Behind”

Intiative.

10:00-10:30 Mr. Souphap Khounvixay presented the main topics about the intentions for the ESD project.

They included:

1. Background and where the project will be undertaken?

He also spoke of the effects of the use of pesticides which largely affects those who are applying the

pesticides. He further spoke of forest cover being lost across SEA countries. He then spoke of the SDGs and

Global Action Plan (GAP) He then summarised his introduction by talking about that Japan, Phillipines,

India, Myanmar are also undertaking this pilot project.

2. Objectives and the various modules. Reflect, share and act being undertaken in Ban Hom and Ban

Simmano.

3. The Target groups and why – also specifying the location as to where Ban Hom and Ban Simmano are.

4. The schedule for this project over the year.

5. Supporting organisations – DVV International, SEAMEO CED, UNESCO Bangkok.

6. Who is responsible of this project and how it is to be implemented. He also spoke of other supporting

organisations and groups, including ASPBEA and

7. The main content and plan of the training workshop.

10:30-10:45 Morning break

Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone and Ms. Somchit Phonevilai: Introduced the activities and asked the

participants about what are expected to gain from this workshop. They were then divided into groups and

gave responsibility brainstorming the workshop rules.

10:45-11:30 They were then separated into further groups and given questionnaire pre-test worksheets

(see Annex 6).

After this they were then asked to brainstorm the following questions:

1. In what way (i.e through what games) can we present the topics?

2. What are your expectations for the workshop?

3. What is the hoped-for outcome?

11:30-11:50 Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone, then got the participants to introduce themselves and to

speak about what they want to achieve through this workshop.

11:50-12:00 Participants then planned together for how they would want the workshop timing to work

after lunch (i.e. a long session and then a break or shorter sessions with breaks as needed).

12:00-1:30 Lunch

1:30-1:35 A participant sang a song as a community contribution.

1:35-1:40 Getting into respective groups for the Ban Hom and Ban Simmano groups.

1:40-2:15 Participants then mapped and drew diagrams of their respective villlages.

2:15-2:25 Mr. Souphap Kounvixay: Presented the topic about ‘Starting with your own practice’

(stimulating/motivating self-critical reflection)

He then divided the participants into two groups: Hom Village participants Simmano Village participants then

had the respective groups draw their village diagram (map).

Participants then presented the maps of the villages that they have drew. First presentation was for Ban

Simmano. Significant POIs include the main roads, temples, village head, farms and the Mekong river to

the south. They also mentioned about the strong points and the weak points of the village. Good things

included: A good culture (with little crime), many planted vegetables grown and sold in Vientiane,

depending on the month and Some weak things included: sometimes having dirt roads and that

agricultural systems are sometimes of low quality and tend to break. It was also mentioned that nearly all

of the farmers plant rice and that they sometimes plant cantaloupe.

A participant from Hom Village then presented their map, mentioning that the main income of village is from agriculture, being that 85% of the villagers are farmers who plant rice and vegetables. The presenter then spoke of issue of the village having inconvenient transport.

Participants were then asked to ‘Identify one of the most successful initiatives for community change and to

describe the change achieved’

A participant from Hom Village then spoke of the village building the Community Learning Center (CLC) at

their village being the most successful initiative because it resulted in villages with no jobs to have vocational

training (i.e sewing, cooking etc.) from the CLC to allow themselves to start their own business or gain skills.

A participant from Simmano village then spoke of the most successful initiative being the village concrete

road construction project because it allowed for the villagers to have a beautiful road which is comfortable

for transportation.

2:25-2:35 Hom Village then presented their village diagram. The participant spoke of the village being

near to Phanphang Village. He spoke of both of the villages having a market, temple, hospital and irrigation

for the farms. He also mentioned the road access to the communities, being dirt roads as a weak point. He

then informally invited the workshop participants to join the Village festival to be held on the 6th and 7th of

April, if they wished to do so.

2:35-2:40 Mr. Souphap Kounvixay then presented the question of “What are the impacts of these two

initiatives?” as a brainstorming question for the two groups.

2:40-2:50 During this time the groups worked on this question.

2:50-3:15 Presentations were then held by two respective groups, presenting their ideas as to what

they want to want to achieve in their villages. A participant from Hom Village spoke of the benefits of

cooperation, people are encouraged to use the CLC and that CLCs can result in people gaining skills to gain

employment in areas such as sewing and cooking. This was followed by a participant from Simmano Village

speaking of the project likely having a good chance of success, because the village starts by donating part

of the budget as well as the people in the village contributing further resulting in the completion of the

projects that are undertaken.

3:15-3:30 Afternoon break

3:30-3:40 Mr. Somsy Southivong then presented the topic of “The concept of ESD and Its Historical

Development.” He spoke on various topics, including:

1. The definition of the ESD idea.

2. ESD Historical Development

3. Sustainable Development History

And

4. The ESD Goals

Participants then watched a Lao video about environmental disasters, which was then followed by a

discussion about the video.

Mr. Somsy Southivong then spoke about how ESD focuses on the quality of life of people and that it

cannot be run in exclusion to all other factors, but that it has three pillars: Economic, social.

He then spoke of the history of ESD across the years.

3:40-3:55 A UNESCO produced video named “Mina Weathers the Typhoon” was then played for

participants.

3:55-4:40 Afterwards, Mr. Somsy Southivong further presented, asking the questions of:

“What is your opinion about this story?” and “What do you understand about ESD?”

Some responses included:

That the environment is important—natural disasters (flooding etc.) are more common now and how we

protect against when this happens is important. He further mentioned and questioned how we can help

each other. The participant also spoke of Laos experiencing fires more recently.

That ESD is life-long learning and that if you learn but don’t practice then you won’t remember, but if you

practice then you will remember. This participant then spoke of that people cannot survive without the

environment and that if we have a good environment then we will have a good life, but if we damage the

environment then we will face the consequences. The participant then gave some examples in their

community such as people planting pesticides and not disposing of their rubbish properly, resulting in

rubbish being in the riverways and causing it to smell and be polluted.

Mr. Somsy Souuthivong ended with talking about the history of ESD.

4:40-5:00 Participants were then requested for feedback about the day, with the questions of:

1. Was the content relevant and interesting?

2. Was the information communicated clearly?

3. Do you feel you had an opportunity to participate and contribute your own ideas?

4. Was is it a good atmosphere?

After the participants had left, the trainers held a meeting to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the

day and what could be improved for the remaining three days.

Some points were that:

-The trainers were prepared, and the participants were on time.

-The timing in the afternoon was more rushed than had been hoped, due to lack of time.

-The break times were not communicated clearly enough to the participants and that an announcement

reminded should be made.

-Some participants were very active in speaking up, but some contributed very little.

-It is possible that the PowerPoint from the back of the room may have been hard to see

-When groups are brainstorming there should be one facilitator per group to help explain to the

participants to explain if they don’t understand the question and guide them.

Day 2: 20th March 2019

8:35-8:45 There was an introduction and welcome back for participants. A brief overline of the

workshop 1 was spoken about.

8:45-8:55 A “dok mai” traditional singing game was undertaken. Every participant explained something

they understood about ESD when the flower reached them, similar to “pass-the-parcel.”

8:55-9:15 Mr. Soukanya Manivanh then presented the on topic about the community-based ESD’s

contribution, speaking about what kind of education do we need for the world we want in the future?

Otherwise known as “Vision of ESD for sustainable development”.

Pictures were shown about the good environment and the environment that was destroyed by humans.

Pictures were then also shown about equality of education.

Participants were then divided into two groups and asked the questions of:

1. What should the community change first?

and

2. What is the long-term vision of community?

9:15-9:30 Feedback comments and public discussion between the participants on what Mr. Soukanya

Manivanh said was then held.

9:30-9:45 Part 2 of Mr. Soukanya Manivanh slides were then presented, including a vision of ESD for

sustainable development.

9:45-10:00 Following this, Mr. Souphap Khounvixay, spoke specifically about pollution.

10:00-10:30 Participants were then divided into two groups, answering the questions of:

1. What should the community do first to change their community?

2. Who should start first to change their community?

3. What are the factors that encourage change to occur?

4. What is the long-term vision of the community?

10:30-12:00 Ms. Somchit Phonevilai presented the topic about ‘Community-based ESD- the action principles

as a community-based ESD analytical framework.’

12:00-1:30 Lunch

1:30-2:30 After lunch Ms. Somchit Phonevilai continued here presentation was held to explain about

the 6 principles of ESD.

Participants were then divided into four groups to discuss the set 14 questions from the Reflect module

(‘Community-based ESD- the action principles as a community-based ESD analytical framework.’)

Afterwards, the four groups presented their understanding answering of the questions.

2:30-2:45 Break

2:45-3:15 Mr. Soukunya Manivanh presented on the topic about reviewing the module ‘reflect’.

Some examples included giving examples of ESD projects undertaken in different countries.

3:15-4:00 Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone then presented the topic about the influence of factors involved

in training. She asked participants to discuss the question of “If we want one training workshop to be

successful what should we do?”

All participants then discussed this and spoke of influencing factors of the training and what they thought

should be done to make the project a success.

Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone then summarised their discussed factors and summarised them as follows:

Firstly, they should have a needs assessment undertaken.

Secondly, they should prepare the training workshop.

Thirdly, they should implement the training workshop and

Finally, they should evaluate the success of the training workshop.

Afterwards, participants were requested for feedback on the running of the workshop, as had been the

case the day before:

day and what could be improved for the remaining two days.


-Complicated topics were handled well and explained to the best of the ability of the trainers and the

participants did their best to understand.

-There was a good amount of preparing and presentations for the participants.

Day 3: 21st March 2019 8:00-8:30 The meeting was once again opened, and participants welcomed back.

8:30-9:00 One participant gave a singing performance opening. This was then followed by four

presenters presenting their ESD experiences.

8:55-9:05 Ms. Darling Keovilaiphone then handed out participant scores from the day 1 pre-test for

their review.

9:05-9:15 Ms. Darling Keovilaiphone then requested each participant to write three issues about their

village.

9:15-9:30 Four issues that were selected from the participants were as follows:

1. Rubbish pollution

2. The use of pesticides

3. Animals largely having no ownership, which can be dirty, and can result in plants being eaten

4. The market having too much supply of vegetables, resulting in produce being thrown away.

9:30-9:50 These issues were then brainstormed as to what two issues are the most important issues.

The selected issues were:

1. Rubbish pollution and

2. The use of pesticides

The participants (from their respective groups) then began to design a training workshop for their

communities.

9:50-10:15 The participants then presented their draft ideas for how workshops should be run,

feedback and discussion with the other respective group was also held.

Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone then presented the topic about designing training sessions. The participants were divided into two groups with the task of arranging pre-written cards in an order/diagram that reflected the process of training, the cards were:

1. Educating people 2. Preparing

3. Setting objectives

4. Setting goals

5. Setting the place

6. Setting the time

7. Setting the content

8. Choosing the trainers

9. Choosing the method

10. Choosing the materials

11. Choosing what information will be used

12. Proceeding with the training

13. Implementing of the training

15. Following up with training

16. Evaluating the training

17. Reflecting on the training

These cards were arranged by each group and then presentations were held to discuss the justification of

how they arranged them.

10:15-10:30 The two village groups were then each given respective topics to write about, for Hom

Village, rubbish pollution and for Simmano Village, pesticide use.

They were then required to write about the objectives of their workshop and what different needs, need

to be taken into account.

10:30-10:45 Coffee break

10:45-11:00 A bell was used this time to get the participants to return on time.

A quick language comprehension game (similar to snap was played).

11:00-11:15 Participants then continued as to what they discussed before.

they were then instructed to discuss and plan using:

SMART = Specifics, Measurable, Achievable/Assignable, Realistic, Time

11:15-11:45 Presentations were held using the “World Café” technique. Presentations about their plans

from one member each were given, with other groups giving feedback and checking if they’ve met the

requirements of SMART.

11:45-12:00 Mr. Soukanya Manivanh, then presented summarising the two topics together and how

plans should be undertaken—what was good, what needs improvement, previous experiences with this

type of workshop style etc… Once again, the specifics of SMART were discussed and the requirements for

the project.

12:00-1:20 Lunch

1:20-1:30 Upon return a traditional song was sang by a participant.

1:30-1:35 Participants then played a quick ‘Chinese-whispers-with-actions’ style game as an

icebreaker.

1:35-1:40 Afterwards, the participants what materials they could use to undertake the workshops, i.e

PowerPoint, projector, computer etc… The participants understood and answered accordingly.

1:40-1:55 Mr. Panyathip Vongthavady, then ran a presentation about effectively running workshops,

sessions, what sorts of materials to use, pedagody and teaching techniques.

1:55-2:10 The participants were then broken into three groups, discussing what materials could be

suitable for the workshop, taking into account what materials they may already have, what is re-usable, or

what is easy to source and affordable.

2:10-2:25 Two short videos on pesticides were then shown video, a video produced by lao44.org and

another video produced by laofab.org

2:25-2:40 Mr. Panyathip Vongthavady then held a group discussion about what was discussed and

learnt from the two videos.

2:40-2:50 Mr. Soukanya Manivanh then gave a short talk followed by a presentation explaining

balancing the workshop’s content with ‘information’ and ‘activities’ to keep villagers engaged.

2:45-2:50 A short video was then played about vaccines and medicine for farm animals.

2:50-3:00 Break

3:00-4:00 Ms Phoudthalith Keoudone then presented about what skills are required to be an effective

facilitator and hold group discussion. She asked participants to discuss the following questions:

What is a facilitator? And how different of facilitator and trainer? How is a facilitator different from a trainer? Participants then presented their thoughts including that a Facilitator is a person who leads an activity to achieve the objective but doesn’t go deeper into content, but just helps the participants to show their ideas. Furthermore, a facilitator should have big ears, big eyes and a small mouth—in other words, listening and watching a lot whilst talking to a minimum. Afterwards, participants were requested for feedback on the running of the workshop, as had been the

case the day before:

-Participants paid attention and interacted with the trainers.

-Trainers worked well with the participants.

-People were on time, with the use of a bell

-The participants enjoyed the learning games

-One of the facilitators questions (Mr. Panyathip) may have not been specific enough for the participants

to grasp.

-Today was mostly or only group discussions (not much variety).

-Some participants still not participate/contribute much to the discussion.

Day 4: 22nd March 2019 8:00-8:30 The meeting was once again opened, and participants welcomed back. This was followed by

a quick warm up activity.

8:30-8:50 Participants were then given group work, to discuss about the methodologies to used to

teach. One question asked to the participants was “What are the methodologies for teaching?”

Ms. Phoudthalith Keoudone presented about teaching methods, she asked the participants to brainstorm

the question of “What are the teaching methods?”

Participants then discussed in their groups, later followed by a World Café style presentation, showing the

results from their discussions.

8:50-9:00 This was followed up by presenting the results of the group discussions to the wider group.

Three main methodologies were selected, they were then allocated to three different groups to discuss

within the group.

9:00-9:15 Topics for each group included, writing the definition and how to teach with this method:

1. Brainstorming

2. Group Discussion

3. Demonstrating

9:15-9:25 Another World Café session was held, looking at the different groups discussion results.

9:25-9:45 Ms. Darling Keovilaiphone then held a presentation and discussion about evaluation. She

asked, “How important is following up and evaluating?”

Participants then gave their understanding of what following up requires. They further spoke of evaluation

and what is required as part of this.

9:45-10:10 Ms. Darling Keovilaiphone then gave the agreed upon definition of evaluation and how

important evaluation and following up is. This was then followed by an additional three questions for

group work, including:

1. What is the objective of evaluation?

2. What are the ethics of evaluation?

3. What is the most used tool in evaluation and following up?

10:10-10:30 Participants then worked on these questions, which was followed by presenting the results

from the group discussions and further discussion. A Discussion was held to discuss which answers were

good and which answers needed improvement/changes. Ms. Darling Keovilaiphone explained what sort of

answers, was looked for and where this was met.

10:30-10:40 Coffee Break

10:40-11:00 A Summary of the last four days what has been learnt thus far was held. A summary of each

session was spoken as well as outlining which presenters spoke and what content was discussed.

Workshop content was also discussed through: What our input was, the process how all the sessions

occurred and what output was produced, otherwise known as “Input, Process, Output (IPO).”

11:00-11:10 Finally, Mr. Sengaloun Vongphuthone the Head of Education and Sport for Vientiane

Capital Provincial Office spoke passing his congratulations and compliments to the team, thanking various

people who were in attendance today, including the various representatives present. He further thanked

the participants for their attendance and work with the project. Advice was given to the participants to

focus on the community-based ESD to have success for their projects/workshops into the future and to

follow the 6 principals in particular.

11:10-11:15 Mr. Soukanya Manivanh then gave a short report and summary of what was achieved

through the workshop.

11:15-11:20 A finishing participant photo was then taken.

11:20-11:50 Participant were then given an evaluation (feedback) form to give comments and feedback

from the 4 days of the workshop. Participants were also asked was they felt they also learnt from the

workshop and what they plan to do into the future regarding this new knowledge.

Participants also had the opportunity to give spoken feedback.

11:50-11:55 Mr. Sengaloun Vongphuthone then gave compliments to everybody and officially closed the

workshop.

11:55-12:00 Finally closing remarks were made from Mr. Soukanya Manivanh, followed by thanking

participants once again and then the official closing of the meeting.

Summarised Strengths of Workshop 1: 1. Government representatives, village representatives and NGOs were available to do the workshop.

2. There was a good level of understanding by participants as well as them staying to the end of the workshop.

3. The trainers had good teamwork in preparing and organising the activities.

4. Participants were active in interacting with the content from the workshop.

Summarised Challenges of Workshop 1: 1. ESD is a new concept for Lao PDR.

2. Materials to be further integrated in the training, sometimes because it is in English, it was difficult to understand.

3. We had little time available.
