A Message from the ChamberSince 1913, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s mission of

strengthening, promoting and serving its member businesses has positively benefited the entire region and local quality of life.

Each day, the Chamber strengthens, promotes and serves its member businesses through numerous programs and events. The Chamber advocates on local, state and federal levels and offers diverse programs for both large and small as well as minority-owned businesses.

AprilArt Festival to Host Baron BatchProvided by Elizabeth Regner

The annual Lubbock Arts Festival will be celebrating its 35th anniversary, April 12-14, 2013, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, 1501 Mac Davis Lane. This three-day celebration is the largest fine art, fine craft event in West Texas.

Professional football player and Texas Tech alumnus, Baron Batch, has been selected as the Featured Artist for the 2013 Lubbock Arts Festival.

Each year the Arts Festival selects a visual artist to honor and spotlight their work. The artist must have ties to the community, as well as, unique and innovative pieces that are reflective of their own style.

Batch will be onsite throughout the Arts Festival. His original work and prints of his art will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Lubbock Arts Alliance’s after school art programs.

“Accomplishments like this are what I’m most proud of,” Batch tweeted. Every year the Arts Festival features over 150 visual artists from around the

nation displaying and selling original work in the mediums of painting, drawing, pottery, fiber, leather, jewelry, glass, wood, and sculpture. A juried gallery of professional work will be available for viewing along with artwork from area school children. There will be different performing stages each spotlighting the very best local and regional talent singing, dancing, acting, and playing instruments. Demonstrations by artists creating their work will take place along with ten different “Kid Stops” providing free art related to activities for children. The “Kid Stops” include ‘make and take’ projects, a Home Depot activity, a chance to perform on the Kids Karaoke stage, and a book fair.

All of this can be enjoyed for the very low admission of just $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Hours are Friday, April 12th & Saturday, April 13th 10AM-8PM, and Sunday, April 14th 12PM-5PM. For more information about these special events and general information about the Lubbock Arts Festival, please contact the Lubbock Arts Alliance, www.lubbockartsfestival.org, 806-744-ARTS (2787).

Batch’s painting“When it Rains” will be on display at the festival, along with many others.

More than 80 people gathered at Main Event for the launch of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s new e-learning component of Chamber University in partnership with Global Classroom. Guests included both Chamber Ambassadors and members of the Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock.

Burr Warne, CEO of Global Classroom, traveled to Lubbock for the launch of the Chamber’s new website to provide entrepreneurs the opportunity to connect, collaborate and learn in a cloud-based environment at their own time and at their own pace. Subject matter experts create the curriculum being used with topics ranging from human resources to SBDC training on how to start your own business.

“R2M is pleased to announce that we are partnering with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce to provide online OSHA Compliance Safety Training. This e-learning platform will give the public access to OSHA Compliance Safety Training at a very reasonable price,” said David Moreno, a co-owner of R2M Engineering.

“Much like a formal classroom, learning components of the courses do include a survey to evaluate the course,” Warne said. “Create your login, manage your classes online and develop a roster of completed courses.”

This format is also being used to provide larger businesses with multiple locations a private, affordable portal for internal

training. Users will benefit from unlimited

classes in the bank of options which grow daily. The online component of Chamber University was created with time constraints of the working professional in mind. Chamber University classmates can also interact with one another on the online platform and benefit from email reminders of class schedules and new classes being launched.

“The Chamber is looking forward to utilizing local subject matters experts to develop online training for Chamber

University, creating ongoing revenue with no start up costs for the business and creating a virtual calling card that be accessed from a national network of chamber member businesses”, said VP of Business Development Robin Raney. The Chamber is currently in discussions with several local businesses to develop course content and all interested subject matter experts are welcome to contact Robin Raney at [email protected] or (806) 761-7009.

Chamber University was developed by the 2010-2011 Leadership Lubbock class and launched in 2011 as an innovative business seminar series designed to address critical business topics and to offer tools to navigate and thrive in the ever-changing demands of the 21st century workplace. Covenant Health is the Presenting Sponsor, United Supermarkets, and Workforce Solutions South Plains are Platinum Sponsors of Chamber University.

Ambassador of the Month: Beverly Jonesby Hallie Davus

Congratulations to Beverly Jones on winning Ambassador of the Month!

When Jones, of Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp., moved to Lubbock she just wanted to be as involved with the community as she could be.

“I joined at the end of January,” she said, “and I got really busy in February.”

Being busy has paid off with Jones being named the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Month for February.

Jones said she loves spending time with the Chamber and the public, and so the ambassador program is perfect for her.

“I was new to Lubbock, I just wanted to serve and to get involved,” she said.

She began attending events, and referred three new businesses.

Only one joined, but it was enough to put her in the lead in her first month of the competition. Ambassadors get points for attending events and referrals, and a running total is kept for each ambassador and each team.

Jones said she was very surprised to hear her name called out as the winner at a

recent Ambassador Luncheon. “I am in shock,” she said. Winning the award will not slow her down though. Jones said

she is excited to do more with the Chamber and to continue what she has been doing.

“I really enjoy interacting with the public,” she said, “and I love ribbon cuttings.”

Business of the Month: Main EventBy Hallie Davis

While some corporate meetings have icebreakers, only a select few have pinball—or mini golf or pizza. Main Event is more than a unique venue for your

next board meeting; it’s now a Chamber Business of the Month. Main Event sponsors many events and meetings and has many

involved members. Still, sales manager Breanne Brantley said she hopes to do even more.

“I just wish we could be involved even more often,” she said. Chamber membership is vital to being a part of the

community, she said, and in a town like Lubbock, it is even more important.

“It’s that small town feel,” she said. “The Chamber is really involved with the community.”

Being involved in local organizations keeps Main Event connected, she said, and Chamber membership plays a huge role in community involvement.

“Membership gives the opportunity to go out into the community, to meet new people and to establish relationships,” she said.

Main Event boasts bowling, laser tag, billiards, glow golf, an arcade, a full service bar and a café, along with meeting and VIP rooms. Brantley said Main Event is ideal for any group, whether a church youth organization or a board of business executives. The entire facility can be rented out at once, and Brantley said the team will work with any budget.

“You can have your corporate meetings here,” she said, “and then you go bowl and have fun.”

Jones accepted her award from Chairman Carlos Morales at a recent board meeting.

Document Shredding & Storage will host a shred day at the Chamber on April 16, and all members are invited.

The 3-year old locally owned Lubbock branch will bring the latest technology in shredding: a truck that allows for document disposal on-site.

“We’re really excited to introduce the mobile shredder,” said General Manager Richard Gregory.

More often, the company picks up shredding and takes it to a plant to be shredded. This is the second time the truck will be in Lubbock, and the first time to partner with the Chamber.

“When you bring your stuff in, you get to see it shredded right in front of you,” Gregory said. “We’ve got a really slick truck; we think they’ll enjoy watching it operate.”

With the tax deadline just past, this is the perfect time to shred old tax documents and records.

Gregory said staff will be on hand to help answer any questions about the business or shredding in general.

“We just want to serve the community in the best way possible,” he said.

A new version of Fibertect®, a nonwoven decontamination wipe created by researchers at Texas Tech University, has proven itself more viable at cleaning up a nerve chemical surrogate than the decontamination substance currently used by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), which is being phased out.

Seshadri Ramkumar, lead investigator on the project and inventor of Fibertect®, said that when compared to the powdered decontaminant called M-291, the all-cotton version of nonwoven wipe paired with an activated carbon center cleaned up not only the chemical surrogate to the nerve gas soman, but also adsorbed its vapors five times better.

The results were published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Engineered Fibers & Fabrics, by INDA – Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry. Experiments in the research were conducted by Utkarsh Sata, a co-investigator on the project.

“The basic structure is still Fibertect®,” Ramkumar said. “This is an improved reiteration of Fibertect®. This is just two nonwoven cotton layers with the carbon in between. The cotton composite takes liquid up very quickly and can adsorb vapors more efficiently than the powdered decontaminant.”

Part of the added benefit of this new Fibertect® is that it contains biodegradable cotton, Ramkumar said. A problem with the powdery form is that it leaves dirty residue.

“That is why the U.S. Department of Defense wants to get away from the powdery form,” he said. “Fibertect® is a fabric. It is skin-friendly. When it comes to adsorbing the surrogate nerve agent’s vapors, it just works better. So the powdered decontaminant will be phased out.”

In 2005, Ramkumar and his team at the Institute of

Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech studied the absorbent capabilities of cotton to create the Fibertect® wipe that can adsorb and neutralize gases and liquids that might be used in chemical warfare.

“Fibertect contributes to our national security and helps with the safety of our first responders,” Sata said.

The process to make Fibertect® has received a patent and has been validated for use as a low-cost decontamination wipe for the U.S. military and the Department of Homeland Security. Also, the wipe’s qualities were re-engineered to create a better absorbent material to pick up the oil slicks inundating Gulf Coast beaches following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010.

Ron Kendall, a co-investigator on the project, said the creation of Fibertect® began as a need to develop a decontamination wipe system for the human skin, which was a top priority for the Pentagon at the time.

This has resulted now in the invention of Fibertect®, a patent and now commercialization.

“The powdered form is very difficult to handle and to apply toward decontamination purposes,” Kendall said. “And it is so much easier to handle and apply toward decontamination needs than M-291 carbon system. We’re learning more and more of absorption capabilities of cotton-carbon composite.”

Other researchers included Eugene Wilusz of the U.S. Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center, Steve Mlynarek of the University of South Florida and Gopal Coimbatore of Texas Tech.

The research was funded in part by DoD, Cotton Inc., the International Cotton Research Center, Texas Department of Agriculture, Cotton Foundation and The CH Foundation.
