Greetings from Hawaii. May this summer season be atime of spiritual refreshment as well as physical rest (?) as youenjoy your vacation. Church activities will change, but we prayeach Christian will continue to faithfully serve the Lord in everyplace.
Our Waialua area has many transients, so we have almostno older members from the community, but we have oneyoung man who is spiritually mature, and a devout Bible student. On May 2 he was installed as a deacon. He is a help andencouragement to our preacher. Now they are sharing the responsibility of teaching from the book of 1Corinthians onWednesday nights.
June 14-18 we will be having our annual Vacation BibleSchool. I will again be the director. Teachers have been enlisted, materials ordered, mission project selected, aind meetings scheduled. Since our sister congregation is having theirschool at the same time, we will be having only workers fromour own congregation.
One of our newer members, Teresa, will be teaching theKindergarten class with the assistance of a neighbor that sherecruited. This neighbor. Kim. attended the Palolo ValleyChurch as a child while we ministered there. Another new
comer has volunteered to be in charge of the daily recreationalperiod. A couple that just opened a Mexican restaurant inWaialua has offered to furnish the refreshments. Now. eill weneed are children to attend. Sunday I'm asking folks to fill outand hand out a form to their friends and neighbors. We havescheduled the school to begin before summer school and thesummer recreation program in the park starts. We pray thatwe will have more children from the area this year.
Our preacher assured me that arrangements could be
2nd Quarter Newsletter, 1999 "1made to pickup teachers and a fewchildrenfrom the area. I can't do it this year. My littleToyota will be full withZola and my grandchildren.
My Colt station wagon is not operablenow. A few weeks ago it was rear-ended bya young driver while Bettina wais wadting tomake a left turn. The back bumper and thefloor pan are damaged so that even one sidedoor willnot open. The estimate for the repair is $3000.
The driver is not insured, but says hewill try to raise the money to pay for it.We'llsee. Since I have had such serious problemswith I'ecent car purchases, I have purchasedan automotive protection plan to cover major repair on the Toyota. This will add $130per month to my expenses. My faithful supporters cover my usual cost, but additionalfunds would be appreciated.
Our women's conference in March was
well attended and enthusiastically received.Several individuals expressed appreciationfor my workshop dealing with grief. Onelady said that she was on the way to a funeral for a drowning victim and felt that shenow had something she could say to them.Zola and I attend the churches that will be
planning the ladies' fall luncheon, so we keepinvolved.
In my first quarter newsletter, I mentioned the planned evangelistic crusade. Wedid not see any direct results from that, butwe have had several new people attending. One of our newer ladies, June, took her
friend, Cheryl, to the ladies* conference. NowCheryl and her daughter come almost everySunday even though June has been sick andunable to attend regularly. A well-behavedlittle girl (many in the neighborhood are rascals) began to attend and she brought hermother. A young man moved into the areaand has been coming to Bible study as wellas on Sunday. He is the volunteer VBS recreation leader.
May we all have a fruitful summer forthe Lord.
Yours in His service.

Greetings in the name of our overcoming Lord. How reassuring it is to know that we can be "more than conquerors"through HIM.
Staff and children had a great time at VBSin June. Attendance ran from 15 to 25. Several of the children continue toattend our afternoon Bible Club, and Zola has been having anover-flowing classroom on Sunday morning with second-graders and yoimger. One of the fathers visited on a recentSunday. Last week he was there with his wife and children.
Sometime ago a group of Christians from a congregationin Honolulu asked to park in the church lot while they went tothe beach to pray. Of course, permission was granted. Theytalked to our preacher and wanted to visit our services sometime. They did so on August 29. Many of them are homeless, and they worship at a car repair shop. Their leader told aboutthe writing of "Itis Weil withMy Soul" and led it and anothersong with his guitar. We had a lunch for and with them beforethey headed back to town. The fellowship was sweet.
My Toyota is doing well, but I must take it in to get tlieair-conditioner serviced. I'm thankful that I did buy a servicecontract, so the repair should not cost anything. Two personshave sent a special offering of $130 each to make a monthlypayment. I'm grateful.
The young man who hit the back end of my Colt has notpaid anything - no insurance. My son-in-law pried open theback door, pounded out the bent floor pan, and was able topull out some of the dent in the back bumper, so it is drive-able. This is a real blessing with four drivers in the family.
Bettina is able to drive the younger children to elementary school and herself and Annie to high school and bringthem home. Since Amy is working and David working parttime, they were unable to continue home-schooling, at leasttemporarily, Of course, I am glad to be able to help with unexpected errands - doctor appointments, etc.
1mentioned Cheryl in my last letter. We met together after church one Sunday for some study time. As a place to

in Acts 2, about immersion, teachings from Romans 6, etc. She is still ''thinking'' about makinga commitment to the Lord. Her sister has justhad a massive heart attack. Please pray forthem.
On November 13 we wiH have our Ladies'
Fall limcheon. It will be at Helemano Plantation,
which is run for, and much of it by, the mentallychallenged. It is located in old buildings and displays show some of the history of the pineappleplantations. There are gardens, a gift shop, anda country store. A perfect setting for our program. Each attendee will receive a booklet witha one-page history of each of our island congregations. Ruth PoweU, daughter of Owen andShirley Still who started most of our congregations, win be the speaker.
I'm the chairperson and registrar. Most ofour churches are made up of newcomers to theisland, so this wiU be an eye-opener for them.
I pray as Faff activities start in your area, thatbeing involved in the Lord's work is at the top ofyour priority list. God bless!
Yours in His service.

Dear Loved Ones: MELE KALIKIMAKAAND HAUOLI IvIAKAHIKiHOU! -- holiday greetings from Hawaii.
Cheryl, with whom I sharedthe gospel months ago, was baptized in the beautiful blue Pacific on November 28. Two mainlandguestswerehappyto witness an ocean baptism.
Since Zola and I don't live near the Waialua Church, we areconstantly looking forways to make effective contact with people inthe area. Weoftenplay Scrabble between Kid's Club and Bible studyon Wednesdays and after churchon Sunday mornings. We heardthat Cheryl's husband, Frank (he doesn'tworship with us) likes thegame, too, so we are inviting folks to come once a month to play withus. Frank came in November. Aswe get out the word, we pray thatothers will join us.
The all-island women's luncheon scheduled for November13had to be postponed. Welearned that twoof our larger churcheshad an important event scheduledon that day.We needed to have itlater, but much later would be too close to the year-end holidays. Then, our speaker, Ruth Powell fell and broke a thigh bone as shewas vacationing on the mainland. She cannot put any weight on thelegfor three months. She stayed with relatives until she couldtravel, arriving here on November 10. She uses a walker but cannot managesteps and can sit for only short periods.
We are trying to arrange to have the luncheon in late Januaryand pray that Ruth willbe able to speak then. We willshare"Precious Memories" through congregational histories.
Since early 1997,Zola and I have been involvedin a Sunday afternoon worship service meeting in the Central Oahu ChristianChurch building. Their morning service is conducted in the Ilocanodialect of the Philippines. Years ago this was a thriving English-speaking congregation.
Virginia Burchett dreamed of reactivating these former members, but we were unable to locate many of them nor enlist newmembers. Our high attendance was 7 and was often 3. Then, in October, Virginia had a massive stoke —even had brain surgery. She isable to breathe on her own, but cannot speak, swallow, talk, or eat,so she has a feeding tube. Since Virginia cannot attend, it seems unprofitable to have Leo Douglass prepare a sermon for the two of us,so we have discontinued the afternoon service, at least for this time.
Now I hope to develop something at Waialua in the afternoonwith the children, ladies, or whoever. Please pray that we will findthat "open door" that will allow us to minister effectively. Zola had alarge children's class for several Sundays, but now some of themhave moved away. The mothers of two of the girls are working on a
