2003 3rd Quarter HCM NEWSLETTER

Greetings from Oahu in Hisname who is the "God of all comfort, who comforts us in all ourtroubles, so that we can comfortthose in any trouble."

Our minister is again on themainland. His wife is recoveringfrom an appendectomy so she wasunable to travel with him. When he

arrived home after his last trip, helearned that his mother hadanother stroke and was in the hospital. Sunday afternoon (3/24), heflew back to Kansas not knowing ifshe would survive until he arrived. In spite of several desperate earliermeasures, she passed away.

Several others in our congregation are experiencing major problems, too.

One will go to court over custody of a child. Steve had plannedto take her in for that early hearing, so another couple agreed to dothat.

Another was scratched by hercat and had cat fever with a temperature of 1030. They feared shewould lose her hand. She is diabetic and has many other healthproblems.

She volunteered to lead thesinging every Sunday as the Lordgave her strength. She came homefrom the hospital Saturday night, and led the singing Sunday morning.

Teresa has a painful back buttries to be in the assembly everySunday. Her son, Joey, has beenworking only a day or two everyweek, so their income is way downand they have trouble paying theirrent. He is looking for another job.

Another has found a job, butnow she has to arrange for childcare.

We learned about these needs aswe came together. One of our newerladies said, "We need a prayerchain," and she is going to organizeone. Another said, "Let's set a dateto come together to clean thechurch building. How about a pot-luck lunch and then stay to clean?"It is so encouraging to see ourpeople taking responsibility toserve. A bus strike is looming, somany of our folks will be needingtransportation, including Zola.

We finished our history of theOld Testament through 16 outstanding characters in our KidsBible Club. Now we are looking forsome New Testament lessons.

We did have our Vacation BibleSchool and almost met our goal of50. We had 46 children enrolledwith a high attendance of 37.

The visiting staff from California were enthusiastic helpersand made it an exciting school. Iwas pleased to have so many of ourown members helping every day, too.

Since Steve has been gone somuch, we have not had anothermeeting of our Expansion Committee, but we were able to transfer thebulk of our monies to the ChurchDevelopment Fund, so it is earningmore interest. We can't make toomany plans until that fund growssubstantially.

My grandchildren here are allback in school. Annie is startingtoday in her classes at the community college. Leilani has gone backto Colorado for her last semester -will graduate May 8. Cyndy is in her3rd year. Bettina is working inMichigan. Leta's girls, Meghan andAnya, are back in college, too.

May you find comfort from theLord in your troubles, and have joyin the Lord as you trust in Him.

Yours to serve Him,

2003 4th Quarter HCM NEWSLETTER"Mele Kalikimaka and Hauoli

Makahiki Hou" is my traditionalyear-end greeting in Hawaiian toyou. While there are many moraland spiritual problems in our world,we should be thankful for the peaceand joy we have as we celebrate thebirth of the "One and only Son" ofGod.

Since I last wrote, some of theproblems at Waialua have beensolved and others dealt with: nobattle over custody; our song leader'shealth is again preventing her toserve; back pain cause now diagnosed.

Finally the Monroes were able toschedule a family camp-out for thechurch October 24-26. They hadworked on plans for months. 30 different people were present at the siteat various times. The Sunday worship time was held there. Their olderdaughter was baptized Nov. 16.

Anita (prefers Annie) and Iplanned to go just on Sunday morning. On the previous WednesdayAnnie fell off the top bunk, broke herleft arm, and cut her lip. I immediately canceled the camp trip.

She got a short cast whichallowed her to use her fingers, so shecould drive, go to college, and a littlelater to work at the sandwich shop. The cast is now off and the liphealed.

Nine young people attended ourfirst pizza party for that age group. Most of them do not attend our ser

I try to do an update on my familyannually in this quarter. AMY continues to work as a legal assistant inthe office of a prominent lawyer; husband DAVID is recuperating fromshoulder surgery. It is getting stronger. With help of the family he hasfinished the bathroom addition.

Their daughter, LEILANI is incollege in Greeley, CO and will graduate on May 8 (I will forego my year-end trip to California in order toattend the graduation). CYNTHIA isin Bethel College in Mishiwaka, Indiana. BETTINA is living in Michiganand plans to attend college there.ANITA is taking classes at the community college here, and has herticket to move to California onDecember 28, where she will live with
