Greetings from Hawaii in the name of our Heavenly Father. How blessed we are tobe a part of the same family through adoption Into Him. May we all seek to growto be more like His Son - our Savior and Elder Brother.

My furlough is now just a happy memory. I arrived back In Hawaii the day after Thanksgiving and spent December catching up with correspondence, bookkeeping, and preparingfor the year-end holidays.

We did have a simple Christmas Eve service for which our preacher's daughter made asign to put on our outside bulletin board announcing It. Acouple in the communitysaw It and came for the service. He is a Catholic but seeking something more, andshe Is a Mormon. We were planning to begin a basic study on What We Bellvefirst of the year. We told them about It and Invited them to attend. They have beencoming regularly since then. Twice they saw us working on the church yard and stoppedto help. Then we learned that he Is a plumbeu and asked hlra. to fix a broken sewer pipeleading from our restrooms. He did. He had to give up his business because he hasdiabetes and It is now affecting his eyes. He needs our prayers.

The next step In preparation for our preschool Is to get the roof rebuilt on thatsmall cement block (about 12'xl6') restroom building. The State requires that acensed contractor get the permit, so we are seeking bids. One was for over $5000.That seems too high. We are trying to find a contractor who will get the permit andallow my son-in-law to do the work.

We have opened a bank account In the name of Makai Christian Preschool, so contributions can be made directly to that account. They are tax deductible since we are using the Mission I.D. number.

Last month our preacher was contacted to conduct a funeral for a 52-day old Infant. The family had formerly been active members of a sister congregation but had not attended there for years. I attended the funeral and the dinner afterwards with Joe.We had opportunity to visit with the great-grandparents, the grand-parents, and theyoung mother. The great-grandparents were especially warm and she expressed a desireto worship with us at Malll, They came one Sunday. Their son and his family camethe next week, and they have been attending since - 9 of them In all. The four adultsplaced their membership with us at Malll on February 9- We pray that we may help themgrow again, and that they will become workers In the Kingdom here. It Is encouragingto see the seats more full.

My weekly after-school Bible Club was resumed after the year-end holidays. Most ofthose attending are younger this time. They enjoy the privilege of having a classof their own are trying hard to listen and learn. I have had five regular studentsand eight others who have come at different times.

You may remember that about nine years ago I began to edit and distribute a monthlynewssheet for our churches In our islands. Then Jo Roth did It for five years or so.Now she Is on the mainland for several months, so I am sending It out again. It isInteresting to contact the leaders in the various congregations and learn first-what Is happening. It Is time consuming, but I enjoy It.

My eye pressure has remained under 20 for several check-ups nowt so I am only havinga check-up every three months now. Apparently the last laser treatment accomplishedits designed purpose. I still tsike the three drops daily and the caplets.

Below you will find a report of my 1991 finances. Please look it over. I am grateful for those who send contributions so faithfully and that they meet my needs. Ido receive a monthly Social Security check and rent from my house, so I manage, butI could not live in expensive Hawaii without the extra Income.

We are still seeking the means to build or obtain a building for a preschool at Maili. The church own expensive property on the highway, and when we get our figures together we hope to be able to get a loan to build. Of course, the more cash we havethe less we will have to borrow. We covet your prayers and your support for this venture.

May the Lord guide and bless us all as we seek His will and wisdom and strength todo it.

Yours, to serve-Him,

SECOND QUARTER, 1992

Greetings in the name of the Lord who provides showers of blessings. We have hadan extremely dry winter. Our grass and mountain slopes wear their summer-timebrown tone. Water restrictions have been considered. But the past three nightswe have had rain and some areas have had rain all day. I hope it helps the levelsin our water tables.

Spiritual blessings and growth continue at Maili Church. The four adults who joinedus on February 9 have served in many ways since then—giving communion meditations, praving, as trustees', conductiong the worship service, caring for the lawn, etc.^ Oneof the ladies cleans thoroughly at least once a month—even does windows—ana oitenbrings flowers from her yard.

The two high school girls were baptized in March. They, their younger brother, andthe preacherk daughter form a regular nucleus for a youth class which I beg^ toteach in April. It is a real challenge because the three have almost no Biblegroun4 while Eleanor has always been in church and attends a Christian school. Thewife of the preacher and his son have begun a class for the little children.

On Easter Sunday a young man was present who had not attended Maili Church for a longtime. He grew up in this area and was close to the Sholtis family, attended services, and became a Christian. But, as many do, he had spiritual growing pains, ^d cameand went in his relationship to the Lord. Since Easter he has been present for almost every service. He told me Sunday that he had taken a part-time job as a cooafter his regular work-day was over. I told him we would miss him in our eveningBible study, but he had told them he would not work on Sunday, or Wednesday eveningsHe seems to really want to grow and witness.

There has been a little progress in our restroom roof-rebuilding project. We didfind a person to draw the plans for a reasonable fee, he got an engineers stamp ofapproval on them and submitted a proposal to the Land Use Commission. We have waitedfor almost two months for word from them. They finally called last week to ask ifwe had recorded the application for the joint use of our two lots. They could notfind a record of it. I sent him the needed information promptly. At least theylooked at our proposal and we trust that they will okay it soon. My son-in-law hasa contractor friend who let him use his license number. When permission is^granted,David will head a construction crew and we will recruit volunteers from variouschurches as well as our own men. David thinks it can be done in a couple of days.

One son of the preacher works for a construction company. They are looking for somesurplus lumber for us. But even if that is not available, we have funds on hand tobuy the material needed. We are grateful to all that donated to the preschool fund.We have opened a bank account now and checks may be written to Makai Christian Preschool or to Hawaii Galls Mission and designated for the preschool.

For months the congregation has set aside 10^ of the offerings for missions. Withthe new families attending the income has increased so much, we are able to add another missionary to our list—Pat Pao Scully. She is a local lady educated at theSunset Beach Christian School with a degree from a local college in Teaching Englishto Speakers of Other Languages. She plans to go to Jakarta, Indonesia to teach

English to students in a school for Evangelists there founded by Bob Maclean, Sheis an answer to their prayer. They needed someone with her qualifications to beable to get their school accredited.

Our preacher, Joe Sholtis, has served the Maili Church for years without^pay. Thisyear the congregation is sending him and his wife Dora to the North American Christian Convention in Anaheim, in July. If you are going I hope you meet them there.

Our conference for the women of our churches April 2^, 25 was a challenging and inspiring one. Kay Watts Moll exceeded our expectations with her three fine messages. Theworkshops were helpful. Five of us attended from Maili. We were especially glad tohave three of our newest members go - the mother and her two teenage daughters, plusDora and I. Our ladies were responsible for the progiram booklets. The cabins werelocated along the curve of the beach about 100 feet from the water. The main sessionswere held in the dining room with a full view of the water, too. It was a beautifulsetting. Dora, Zola, and I attended the planning sessions for the conference^- atleast one a month January through April. This month we will have the evaluation meeting,

]^y eye pressure continues in the normal range. At the last exam the doctor dilated^myeyes and checked the optic nerve. He said it looked that same as it did the last timehe drew a picture of it. I will have another visual field test in three months. I^thank the Lord for so many physical blessings - my good health, that I can still drive, for a reliable car and inexpensive to operate, for faithful supporters, for a place^tolive and work, and for family and friends. But I am especially grateful for the spiritual blessings—for salvation, the indwelling Holy Spirit, the Bible, and the'hope ofheaven. May you enjoy these blessings too.

Yours in gratitude,CONTRIS'JTCHS, January - April, 1992

THIRD qUARTER, 1992

Gree'tings from the land of the sun to whom we strive to shine forth the light ofthe SONI Thank you for your interest in this work.

Ihe Kessler family continues to attend and serve faithfulljf. They are "bringing others, too. Mrs. Kessler's elderly father has heen attending recently and sometimes the father of the two little grandchildren they care for. Mrs. Kessler's sister and twochildren visited one Sunday. Our attendance has heen down though since several of

^ur members have had a virus which.kept them.dcy^ f'^r a week or so. Another membertook a second job and hoped to be off on Sundays and Wednesdays but it does not workout that way very often.

Our Vacation Bible School reached children in at least^families that do not attendour regular services. Four children from two families who live next door to thechurch have been coming to Bible Club and Sunday evening classes since VBS. For VBSwe had four teachers and two helpers from the congregation. There was a high attendance of 21 and a low of 18. All the workers and several of the children had perfect attendance. The last night we held an open housQ and all the chilton had anadult present for them except the little boy from the Buddhist family? 26 in all.Our preacher lead the rousing song servi'-e each evening. I directed, played thepiano, gave the missionary talks, and taught the Middlers. Having the school justhree nights a week for three weeks made it non-tiring for everyone.

Just over two weeks before our VBS began, Zola Brown did have a thyroidectomy. Shehad hoped that they would only remove the lumps, but the doctor felt it necess^to remove most of the gland. Now she must take thyroid medication regularly whichwill add to her already strained budget. She felt weak for over two weeks and hadto rest her voice for a few days, but she was able to teach in our VBS andto her job as a conference center cook which provides housing and insurance. Shedoes have minimal mission support.

FINALLY we have received our building permit to replace the foof oiro^ churchroom building. David came yesterday evening and measured the chapel building. Nowhe can order the materials to repair the posting under that building and its backporch at the same time as the roof materials. We have $7000 to begin const^ctionbut more will be needed. Gifts may" be sent to Makai Christian Preschool. They aretsLX deductible under the Mission I.D. number.

My driver's license expired in July. I did not pass the vision test for renewal, since my sight has become increasingly blurry. My doctor sent a statement, but itdid not arrive before the expiration date. So one morning I did not use my usualeye drops, prayed, and retook the eye examination. This time I pas.::ed. Butvision continues to deteriorate so I curtail my driving. I have quit bringing thechildren to church (the preacher does it) and driving at night. Now I drive onlyin the daytime on familiar roads and at slower speeds. I can see big objects andmoving ones but cannot make out details, read signs at ^y distance, etc. I canstill read and type, etc. without glasses, but need them for extremely smalj print. Now my doctor has decided it is time to intervene with surgery. On October 12 he hasscheduled an operation for glaucoma and a cataract on my right eye. He says it is

Impossible to determine for sure how much of the problem is due to the cataract andhow much to gi.aucoma, but he feels that a cataract causes much of the problem, andthat CM be co.TTected. the slaucoma surgery shculd eliminate the need for so muchmealcatlon to keep the pressure dOHn*

For months I have been using the Maili parsonage and my daughter Amy and her familyaye been living In my house* There is also a smaller two-bedroom house on that lot

which I haye been renting out. Unless plans change» I will be moving into that littlehouse about October 1, so that It will be easier for the King family to care for meafter my surgery. Since I will not be able to bend over or lift anything for abouttwo weeks, I will need help. I have excellent medical insurance which with medicareshould cover all my surgical expenses. Premiums are paid ly the East Cahu congregation with which the Palolo Valley Church merged a few years ago. We served thePalolo Church for 21 years as missionaries. I just praise the Lord for providingfor my physical as well as my spiritual needs.

I trust the Lord Is providing your needs, too, as you seek to do His will.

Yours In the Son,

FOURTH QUARTER, 1992

As God used a decree from a cruel emperor to take Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem to- fulfill prophecies concerning Jesus* birth, so, I believe. He can and will use the hurri-caiB winds of of September 11 to accomplish His purpose for Maili Church. You probablyhave already seen the picture of the back of our property in ^ Christian Standard, but this view from the highway appeared in a local newspaper. Now the splinteredposts, steps and slats have been removed along with the porch roof. A professionalhas been hired to remove the asbestos shingles as required by law. At a recent workday twenty persons took all the useable materials from inside and cleaned up thedebris from the collapsed porch roof at the back of the parsonage. It filled to overflowing a 30-yard bin. We were offered a 30year low-interest loan from the government, but the restrictions were so great and decisions had to be sc quick ^note tobe signed by December 10), the church officers decided we should not accept it. Nowwe are examining our needs and trying to determine what type of building will bestfill them. We want to have a preschool as well as have the worship auditorium. Inthe meantime all of us in the congregation are seeking ways to add to the buildingfund.

Some of my regular supporters have already responded to our need and have sent special gifts to the building fund. Ihis letter goes to many who have never contributed to this mission. I do pray that you will consider making a one-t1me gift forthis purpose, or agree to send a smaller amount on a regular basis. I would appreciate it if you would suggest this project to your class, group, or congregation. It would make a good Christmas "gift for Jesus". We have only about six familiesattending regularly and some of them are not wage earners. We covet your prayersand support.

On the day of the hurricane we were ordered Xo evacuate, so the Kings and I wentto join Zola Brown at the camp where she cooks. There was no damage there to thebuildings or to my houses. David had planned to order the materials that day torepair the restroom roof and the posting under the church worship auditorium. Itis too late for the posting, but the roof materials are on hand, and we hope tohave it repaired by our November 22 Thanksgiving Singspiration. It will be heldon the back porch under a big tent/tarp since the roof is gone. Our congregationcan meet in the one large classroom in the educational building but there is noroom for growth. There were only two or three empty chairs last Sunday. Latecomers had to take the front seats.

Attendance at our Sunday evening children's classes has declined. Three familiesof children who came to VBS have moved away - eight children. One of them is theboy from the Buddhist home who came ' regularly and is so interested. His auntieusually brings him on Sunday evenings but not on Wednesday afternoon.

f]y 0y0 surgery went very well. My doctor was pleased at every check-up, and indicated that it was doing better than usual. There was very little pain and onlythe usual swelling. The pressure is remaining low without medication. He saysthat with the good recovery from the glaucoma and cataract surgery, there is littlepossibility that I will ever be blind. Praise the LordI Thank you for your

prayers and concern. I do have a cataract on my left eye but still have good visionin it though somewhat blurred at a distance. I had a refraction this month butprobably will not be fitted with glasses at least until December.

The holidays are always special for me: partly because I hear from many friendsonly at this timq and look forward to their cards and letters which tell about theactivities of their families. So I will tell you about mine. My youngest, LORA.moved into her own apartment this year nearer to her work in a small computersoftware manufacturing firm. She enjoys working with her church and a theater group.PHILIP and his wife and daughter still live in Frankfort, IN were he keeps busy withbuilding projects for his family and friends, at work for Frito-Lay, at church, andwith home Bible studies. He was sent to Texas to help determine if the machineryin a closed plant could be used in Frankfort. MARK and Nikki, his wife, are testengineers at the Lockheed plant in Sunnyvale, GA working on the MILSTAR satelliteprogram. They work long hours and have little time for other activities exceptan .occasional camping trip. lETA has begun to teach a Kindergarten class at theprivate school her children attend. She enjoys being on vacation when they are.She continues her children's ministry at church as a volunteer. DAVID, her husband, sponsors the college group. AMY and DAVID and their seven children live nextdoor to me. The three older girls attend public school, but she home schools theseven-year old and two preschoolers. They are active in their church, and the children are involved in their large youth and children's groups. David keeps my thingsin repair and helps us with building projects and repair at Maili Church. Noticethat both my son-in-laws are Davids. Lord willing, I will be in San Jose, GA forthe holidays from December 21 to January 8, to visit Lora, Leta, and Mark.

As they say in Hawaiian, MELE KALIKIMAKA - HAUOLl MAKAHIKl HOU (Merry Christmasand Happy New Year).

Love and prayers,
