TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 25In 1957 the Tamil movie music charmer G Ramanathan

was in top form composing music for as many as eight movies. The films included ‘Aaravalli’, ‘Ambikapathi’, ‘ChakravarthiThirumagal’, ‘Karppukarasi’,’Rani Lalithangi’, ’PuthumaiPitthan’ and ‘Vanangamudi’. Quite an achievement that! Suchwas the genius of G. Ramanathan.

‘Aaravalli’ has already been discussed inan earlier chapter. ‘Ambikapathi’ was a remake of the 1937

box office bonanza of South Indian Cinema superstar M. K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. During that vintage year 1937, hehad acted in two films ‘Ambikapathi’ and ‘Chintamani’ andboth of them had turned out to be super hits creating moviehistory. Both are remembered and watched to this day afternearly 80 long years!

The first version of ‘Ambikapathi’ had been directed by theAmerican Tamil film maestro Ellis R. Dungan. This newversion was directed by the noted Tamil filmmaker Pa.Neelakantan and was produced by the noted Indian filmindustry personality AL. Srinivasan and his associate V.Arunachalam. The script was by noted screenwriter andplaywright Sakthi Krishnaswamy, Chinna Annamalai andMa. Lakshmanan.

Sivaji Ganesan and P.Bhanumathi played the roles earlierdone by Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and M. R. Santhanalakshmi, while the famed star M. K. Radha played the legendary poetKambar whose son was Ambikapathi.

AL. Srinivasan, in his kindness, was anxious to bringThyagaraja Bhagavathar into the film playingthe poet Kambarbut Bhagavathar was unwilling even though he had beenfinancially embarrassed by his own productions bombing atthe box office. The salary offered by ALS was ten thousandrupees which was quite a fortune during that period butBhagavathar emphatically refused it. Then on board came M.K. Radha, the erstwhile hero of movies like ‘Chandralekha’,‘Apoorva Sahotharargal’ and ‘Samsaram’.

Other artistes playing important roles in the film includedChittoor V. Nagaiah as Kulothunga Cholan, M. N. Nambiar asthe villainous poet Ottakoothar and N.S.Krishnan, T. A.Mathuram, K. A. Thangavelu and others. Sadly N. S. Krishnanpassed away during the making of the film and AL. Srinivasan,in a noble gesture, dedicated the movie to the memory of theIndian Charlie Chaplin. The film includes a shot showing SivajiGanesan bowing to the statue of N.S.Krishnan.

The film is based on a popular folk myth tale set in the Cholaempire during the eleventh century. The titular hero isAmbikapathi, the son of the Tamil poet Kambar, who is in lovewith the Chola princess and daughter of Kulothunga Chola,Amaravathi. The king disapproves of their love and insists ontesting Ambikapathi’s literary mettle before judging his worth. The test given to Ambikapathi is that he should sing a hundredpoems in the field of Puram (dealing with war and politics). Thepoems should not have any reference to the field of Aram(dealing with love and romance). He would be beheaded if hefailed the test.

Ambikapathi begins the test in the King’s court with aKadavul Vaazhthu (invocation to God). Amaravathi, who iskeeping count with flowers, mistakes the invocation as thefirst poem and counts it as number one. When he has sung onlyninety nine Puram poems, she thinks he has completed thetask and signals him that hundred poems have been sung.Declaring victory, Ambikapathi sings of his love for her, thefamous song ‘Satrey sarindha Kuzhaley’, describing the earthybeguiling beauty of his heart-throb Amaravathi.

This song had been immortalised by ThyagarajaBhagavathar singing it in the 1937 version and found a placeagain in the later version with T. M. Soundararajan singing it.However the impact was not the same.

Expectedly there were many songs in this movie sung off thescreen by T. M. Soundararajan, Sirgazhi Govindarajan, V. N.Sundaram, C. S. Jayaraman, P.Susheela, A. L. Raghavan andothers. Most of the songs were rendered by Soundararajaninspired by Thyagaraja Bhagavathar’s style of singing. Songswhich became very popular include ‘Satrey sarindha kuzhaley’and ‘Masilla nilavey nam’ (TMS and P.Bhanumathi).

One of the interesting featuresof the song ‘Vaada malareyThamizh thene’, rendered by Soundararajan and Bhanumathi,is that it was composed in the raga Mukhari, usually associatedwith sadness and grief (called ‘Azhugai ragam!). However, thebrilliance of G. Ramanathan made it a happy duet between thelovers in the same raga. That was the Tamil movie musiccharmer’s genius.

The film however did not have as successful run as expectedbecause the original version of MKT and Dunganof 1937wasstill fresh and glowing in the minds, hearts and souls ofmoviegoers and film music lovers.

Metrowater toinstallelectromagneticflow meters

In order to save water,Metrowater will install high-precision electromagnetic flowmeters at various points alongthe 64-km long existingdesalination plant lines.

The flow meters will helpascertain water leaks thathave caused major revenuelosses to the department. Themeters will transmit data onwater flow and leaks to 22 datatransfer units through atelemetry system. This will befurther integrated with acentralized matrix displaysystem functioning at Metro-water head office, Chennai forreal-time monitoring.

The department spends alarge amount of money todesalinate water at its plants. While groundwater is sus-tainable, desalinated watercomes at a price and must beconserved.

A senior official of Metro-water said that the system willenable regular monitoring ofthe water flow data on regularbasis. The data will be providedto engineers who can review itand take decisions. The datafrom the flow meters can betransmitted by SMS to cellphones or as an Excel sheet viaemail.

At locations where electricityis not available, battery-operated flow meters and datatransfer units will be installed, the official said. “Thetransferred data will help usdistribute water equally to allwater distribution points. Theutility will cost 1.5 crore,” headded.

Currently water collected atvarious water distributionsystem (WDS) points can bemeasured, but the leaks thatoccur in pipes during con-veyance are not accounted for.

Water conservationists andexperts have welcomed themove.

Sir, The 30-year-old Tamilnadu Slum Clear-ance Board building on South Usman Road, near Krishnampet, is in a bad condition.Owing to the dilapidated state of the build-ing, most of the occupants have vacated it.Will the authorities take immediate mea-sures to restore the building or pull it downand construct a new one in its place? – V.Srinivasan, Silverpark Apartments, 36,Thanikachalam Road, T. Rare speciesSir, Recently I hired an auto named ‘Namma

Auto’ from Saidapet bus terminus toPadmanabha Swamy temple in Adyar.

After reaching my destination I was givena receipt for the fare by the driver who wasvery polite and courteous.

I was very happy about the driver and thecompany which operates the autos.

After some days, I happened to hire anauto from Usman Road (near SaravanaBhavan hotel) to CIT Nagar (near Nandhistatue). I was asked to pay Rs. 50 for such ashort trip. Since I was accompanied by myaged mother I paid the amount to the driver.

I appeal to auto drivers to charge reason-ably like ‘Namma Auto’ and earn the goodwillof the public. Varadhan, CIT Nagar(East)
