Memory CornerAfter an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis: The Emotional Impact

By Ava M. StinnettWhen a friend or loved one is formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s like-ly that you’ve already noticed some symptoms. These may include impaired speechor memory loss that interferes with daily life, such as remembering events that justhappened,•repeatedly asking for the same information, or forgetting how to drive to afamiliar place. Difficulty holding a conversation or struggling to do practical tasks, such as paying bills or doing household chores, might also be noticeable.Although symptoms will vary for each person, it’s important to consider not only thecognitive and practical aspects associated with Alzheimer’s disease but also thepsychological and emotional impact. Experiencing memory loss or being unable toperform daily routines can be quite challenging. For the person with Alzheimer’s, thiswill sometimes lead to low self-esteem, lack of confidence, and feelings of isola- tionas personal relationships change. However, numerous studies have confirmed that even when memories fade, evenwhen a loved one no longer recognizes friends and family members, the diseasedoes not erase the lasting effect of feelings and a sense of being socially connect-ed. Although it may seem like the person with Alzheimer’s “can't differentiate be-tween you and other caretakers in the later stages, the research underlines theimportance of emotionally supporting those living with the disease. The influence ofpositive caretaking and emotional support… goes a long way. [Although he or she]may not remember the most recent visit from loved ones, those feelings will still re-main; caring actions can have a lasting impact.” (Bushak 2014)According to a research study from the University of Iowa, “Providing… small joysreally does make a difference—even if you automatically assume they won't re-member these things.” The findings “should empower caregivers by showing themthat their actions toward patients really do matter. Frequent visits and social interac-tions, exercise, music, dance, jokes, and serving favorite foods are all simple thingsthat can have a lasting emotional impact on quality of life and subjective wellbeing.”(Guzmán-Vélez, Feinstein & Tranel, 2014)Some believe that those who have Alzheimer’s disease know that pieces of thepuzzle are missing. They may not be able to remember who we are, but they feel usjust the same. Therefore, if we learn to listen for clues for how they feel instead ofwhat they say, we’ll understand them much better.ReferencesBushak, L. (2014, September). “Alzheimer’s Patients Still Feel Strong Emotions, Despite Fading Memories:Why Caretakers Matter.” Retrieved from www.medicaldaily.com.Guzmán-Vélez, E., Feinstein, J. & Tranel, D. Dear Residents, Families, Friends, and Staff,

Spring is here! The warmer weather is just around the corner. I am hopingthat all of the April showers we have had will bring us many May flowers. Ican't wait to see the residents visiting in the courtyards and soaking up the

warm sun. Next time your out in the courtyard go in the back and check outthe beautiful residents garden in the two big white planters. They have some

beautiful flowers growing and I can’t wait to see what comes up in thevegetable garden. We are also planning on doing some gardening in the

Memory Care courtyard. Can't wait to see what they plant!

This time of year brings thoughts of longer days and warmer Sacramentonights. I can't wait for the warm weather to be here everyday and everynight. I know Shantel will be planning some wonderful activities in ourbeautiful courtyard. At night when I leave, I love to see the residents,

families and guests sitting outside by the fountain enjoying the weather andcompany.

McDonaldConsider the music that was given to the world by people like Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky,

Bach and other greats. How could it have been possible for those composers to sit in roomslit by candles, using a quill pen, to put together concerts, symphonies, operas, etc., withcomplex genius that reaches beyond the ability of people to do the same things today withcomputers and other modern technology? And Beethoven was deaf. Where did it come fromand did it come to them for a reason? Why does the music of Mozart have such a deep effecton consciousness that something happens to the human mind when his music is played? (TheMozart effect.)

Larry Dossey, M.D., in his article, “The Body as Music” says, “Why are we moved by music? One reason may be that the body itself is intrinsically musical, right down to the DNA thatmakes up our genes.” There is a deep connection between your DNA and the music of Mozart,Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, et al, and the reason why they were able to compose suchmusic in a dark room by candlelight, with a quill pen, is because the music was composed forthem. The very essence of existence through the celestial connection of all life was playingmagnificent music within them. There was no need for Beethoven to hear with his earsbecause what came through him on to the paper in the form of music was the coding sequencesof life itself. DNA.

And when that DNA is given expression to the ear, we were captured by the MOZART EFFECT.The vibrations that harmonize with our DNA through Beethoven’s 9th symphony, or thesolace and beauty, which ran through our very beings of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique was allplanned.

Our very existence is a symphony of love. We are created with a harmony of love flowing throughour bodies and minds. Even in the Scripture, the text admonishes us to make a joyful noiseto the Lord and to praise Him with musical instruments. Can you grasp this wonder? Ourvery DNA is God’s music playing within us and this is why

We may not be able to compose music that will touch the core of our being. We may not be ableto create sounds to flow in harmony with the music of our DNA. The beauty of all of this isthat we do not have to. The harmony is within us, flowing through our DNA. The music toharmonize with that DNA has been provided for us by the composers of long ago.

We can use music to help empower us every day of our lives by setting aside a half hour of timefor meditation, (or “alone time” if that word is more pleasing to you) and do the following:

1. Darken the room and play classical music. Mozart is excellent but all classical is beneficial.

2. Don’t be concerned if the music becomes loud or driving. Those frequencies changes arenecessary to create the vibrations required. In a Tchaikovsky symphony, for instance, thereare different ranges. There is joy, there is sorrow, and there is beauty. There are periods thatare loud and challenging, and periods that are soft and reflective.

Just like the life of each of us.
