Dave HelfrichIn October of 2008, Eli Beard, Lee Wassink, Nathan Sheafor and Butch Kreuzer put their heads together to formulate what it would take to bring true individualized artistic design to the memorial marketplace. They got together to solve a problem that was driven as a function of their own personal experiences of loss as well as those stories shared by folks they had met along the way. They learned that families need the ability to individualize a memorial specific to a person’s loves, passions and spirit. It was evident that no solution was currently accessible generally and where it did exist, was priced outside of the reach of the larger community.

The effort resulted in the creation of American MemoryCraft hand blown glass cremation urns and keepsakes. American MemoryCraft

Dave Helfrich is an artist of the Willamette Valley, working in the medium of Oregon grown hardwoods. “My inspiration comes from the natural beauty of the wood’s grain. Each piece is unique and beautiful and as it transforms into one of my hand made wood urns, that unique character is exposed. I’m proud of every piece that leaves my shop.”

Dave created his first wood piece in 1976 when he made a cabinet for a neighbor. He started out with basic tools: a router, a shop smith and an electric drill. In 1978, Dave built his first woodworking shop and he hasn’t stopped making beautiful pieces of art since. Dave and his wife, Bunny, owned a retail shop in Albany called “Bunny’s.” Both Dave and Bunny created artistic pieces for the store and Dave’s woodwork mostly consisted of duck decoys and jewelry boxes. Today, Dave makes a variety of shapes and sizes of cremation urns. His favorite woods are Myrtle, Ash, Maple, Walnut, Oregon Oak and Alder.

The Popes

Jason and Angie Pope are a husband and wife team that specialize in custom rock and granite memorials. Jason began working in the memorial business almost 30 years ago as a fine arts artist. In 1999, he decided to start his own memorial business. Angie joined him in 2004. Their family philosophy is that everyone deserves a beautiful, custom memorial, no matter their price range. Jason specializes in hand drawn portraits and personalized artwork. Both Angie and Jason were raised in the Northwest and love the chance to use local rock products, as well as granites from around the world. They are grateful every day to be able to help families memorialize their loved ones in unique and special ways.

Pacific Coast Urns

Martin has loved wood since, as a child of 9, he watched his grandfather working with wood in the garage, then taking a woodshop class in high school. His artistic eye sees form and color in an otherwise ordinary looking piece of wood. After years of working for others, Martin has found a “home” in the wood shop at Pacific CoastUrns. There he not only enjoys making ourbeautiful urns but can also follow his ideas forcreating new items. Simple in design, our handcrafted urns and keepsakes are created as lasting memorials to loved ones. We use primarily Oregon Myrtlewood and California Pistachio. Redwood, Teak, Padauk, Purple Heart, and Black Walnut make nice compliments to urn structure. Because of the unique grain of the wood, each urn is one of a kind. We offer cube, chest, hexagon, vertical and keepsake urns. All of our urns can be customized by adding framing, inlaying, or having laser engraving added.

Green BurialA green burial is a burial which emphasizes environmental sustainability. This means that the body is not embalmed using chemicals and is buried using only biodegradable materials. This could be in the form of a shroud, casket, or combination of both. The biodegradable container is buried directly in the ground with no outer burial container so that the body may return to directly to the earth. While this is not a new concept, as many cultures have practiced green burial for centuries, green burials have gained popularity in the past several years. While not every cemetery allows for green burial, there are several throughout the Northwest which accommodate them.

Choosing a green burial may affect the type of service that can be held. A traditional funeral service with the body present may not practical when choosing green burial since the body cannot be prepared for public viewing. A graveside service is appropriate as the body does not need to be prepared but can still be washed and dressed if desired.
