CONCERT REVIEW: -By: (the ever groovy) IAN ROBB

MODERN ENGLISH/THE ALARMApril 19, 1984Trenton War Memorial

After a year of waiting, FINALLY, MODERN ENGLISH WAS BACK! It wasa bene f Lt concert with all proceeds going to M.D.A.

There was only one bad aspe ct of this concert of new optimism andthat was the pessimism of the bearded gorillas posing as 'security guards'.Expecting an imminent riot in the orchestra pit, these bullies went out oftheir way to warn (threaten?) each person that if they stood up to danceduring the concert they would immediately be thrown out of the hall. 'I'monly going to tell you once, okay!', they warned us. Their words kept meglued to my seat because I knew they meant business. But I was mad ashell, though!

After sitting through a painfully pretentious local band (of which Ihave conveniently forgotten the name) a large, beautiful back-drop ofModern English's Ricochet Days album cover was lowered and the band tookthe stage. Robbie, wearing his ever present ray bans, launched the showinto a sea of adoring applause with "Rainbows End", my favourite song fromthe album. From this very first song the boys had the audience GROOVIN'!Some overwhelmed fans DARED to dance and were instantly harassed by over-conscientious 'security guards'. This angered Robbie no end.

"Is it me who's stupid, or what? I thought that concerts were forpeople to enjoy themselves and dance" Robbie chastised the bullies butstill we were not allowed to dance. The band played on .... Spinning MeRound, Machines, Ricochet Days, Hands Across the Sea (this song had every-body clapping), and After the Snow, Someone's Calling and a number "a fewof us might know" I 'Melt With You. It was during "Melt" that some over-zealous fans jumped on stage to dance with Robbie, only to be dragged fromthe stage by fast acting, yet slow-minded security. The daring dancers weremost likely thrown out.

Overall, Modern English have become a lot tighter. They play greattogether with a lot of interaction with one another. It is quite obviousthat they enjoy what they do. Gary's guitar work is hauntingly beautifuland he can play some amazing riffs that would compell the most jaded toe totap. Robbie delivers powerful, straight forward vocals, full of emotion andheart felt passion. Steve really grooves at the keyboards and enjoys dancingwhile he keeps time with a tambourine. Mick is the picture of concentrationwhile supplying Modern English's heavy duty bass lines, and Richard completesthe musical montage with his hard driving beats. With such a winningcombination, 1984 should be the year that M.E. will win the heart of America, for this is indeed a band that should not be ignored.

"I Melt With. You" was the finale of Modern English's brilliant set andto the fans disappointment there was no enco~e. They left an ecstatic crowdin the perfect mood for the Alarm. Waiting a year to see Modern English wastruly worth the wait. They were groovier than I remembered.

Thanks for a Great Performance.

11Modern English I M A I L BAG"Congratulations on the first issue of the Modern English Fanzine. It was soGROOVY! I loved the entire fanzine and read it from cover to cover in onesitting. I'm glad that the~e is finally a fanzine dedicated entirely to oneof the grooviest bands to come out of Britain in the past few years. It iswritten with great love and with the positive energy that is the soul ofModern English. I am truly excited to be a member of such a groovy fan clubin which I, the member am the contributor. This makes me feel like I'm partof the club and what I have to say is important. Thanks for letting myvoice be hearq. Be groovy!"

-Ian Robb

Dear Fanzine: What a great way to keep Modern English enthusiasts informed!Keep up the good work. It's very informative but you should put it out moreoften. I noticed an error on your part in Issue 1t2, page 7.' It states: "Itwas a cold rainy Tuesday afternoon when Robbie, Gary, Mick, Steve and Dickarrived in NYC's Kennedy Airport. The date was March 13th." The date isc~rrect. The location is wrong. It was Newark, New Jersey's InternationalAirport' and it was a very wet, rainy, snowy, sleety Tuesday. I know, becausemy sister and I we re there. Believe me, a 2 hour drive (each way) fromLong Island to greet them was worth it! I'm glad I braved the snow storm todrive there! Robbie remembered us from last year and gave us each a hellokiss and spoke with us while he hurriedly boarded his plane for Florida ...Take Care and thanks for listening.

Rainbows End.-Rory Pugliese

Dear I-10dernEnglish: Ever since I heard your song "I Melt With' You"I've been in love with you. You seem to have a strong view aboutlove and caring. All your songs are so meaningful, and your latest,"Hands Across the Sea" is the best. I think that it's about afriend who is in another country. But the part where you say: "Comewith me/Close your eyes and touch what meets you there/Reaching out/Stretch your hands across the sea" is so beautiful I just have toexplain it in my own words. The first part seems to be talking abouttrust, like it's saying, close your eyes and trust me to lead youaround. And the second part means that we have to stretch our handsacross the sea and touch our neighboring countries. I don't see whywe don't all just throw our nuclear weapons away, join hands with ourenemies and make them our friends. I really think you should send atape of your "Hands" Video to the United Nations. Thank you.

Love, (with outstretched hands)Marianne Kiyou
