Tuesday 4 August 2015 Kia ora whanau! Crikey – it is all go, go, go and the kids have had a busy, fabulous start to the term! Book Launch at the marae: We had a great start to Week 1 of the term with the book launch at the marae. We are so privileged to have been given some amazing books with local legends that they have produced for us to use. We are fortunate to have phenomenal support from our local runaka and marae as we work towards meaningfully integrating things Maori and local into our school – a great example of a community at work! We are really excited to use these stories in everyday interactions in the classroom – the kids love the illustrations and the understanding that the books develop. Thanks so much to Bubba for working on this for us! Hapori awhina Update: This community time/service with our Year 4-8 students is going really well. The students take ownership of our school and help run things in an age appropriate way. All our senior students have completed a series of 8 leadership workshops about how to run groups, meetings, manage people, time management etc. This is such a fabulous opportunity for our seniors to ‘take charge’ and develop as leaders. They have been doing a great job and are getting better at this all the time. We have decided that from this week we will be growing this to include the whole school so stand by for chaos! We will be having groups in charge of lunchtime entertainment, the school fruit, teacher assistants, school media team, school gardeners, caretaker assistants etc. It is a phenomenal team building time on a Friday afternoon and quite intense as all their ideas percolate and they work out how to make it happen! The lunchtime Entertainment Group this week ran some sack races that were great fun! The Event Management Group are planning: A DISCO! Date to be announced very soon… Will be a gold coin entry Superhero theme Prizes for best superhero! Start planning your outfit now! Disco will be in a few weeks once they sort the dates the venue is available! Generosity: Polyfest Dates: We are truly blessed to have the support we have for our school as shown by these generous people: For your diaries: We are all performing (at least the kids are!) on: Thursday 27 August We start at 9.20 and it is a Bluff take over as all 4 of our groups will perform one after the other from this time until 10.00ish. It will be early start at school to get everyone ready!! – more details to follow later The Golden Age Gifted us $400 as their local charity of the month for their raffle. Thanks! Just granted us $5,500 for maths equipment – just phenomenal!! Remember - There are regular updates on our facebook page that anyone can view https://www.facebook.com/bluffschool Netball Results: A GREAT season had by all! Grade wins by both our Saturday morning teams!! Awesome to see our kids holding their own against the town schools! Thanks so much to our coaches Katie and Talia – we really appreciate all the time you put into our kids! Kids Writing: As always, we work really hard to provide extra opportunities for kids and try to juggle staffing and money to make this happen. Part of this is Emma taking a senior girls writing group – these are called Wonderings… Dear Galaxy I admire your soft, pale stars I love the way your colours light up at night like a beautiful rainbow, dancing across the sky. It’s a ritual, night, day, night, day Your patterns are like a sea of colours But let me ask you a question How are you not falling down? Brooke Biahn Dear Sky I love how you are blue during the day It is always amazing when you allow the moon to show with a light fade The clouds dress you up so well that it hides you sometimes I can never wait for you to return The sun always lights you up but at night you disappear At dawn you are making yellow, light pink and a bit of green Whey do you let those clouds cover you up? What makes you blue? Please tell me in the day. Jordan Dear Chicken How I admire your delicious creations How your feathers look like a Maori cloak I like that you come in many shapes and sizes and no matter what, you are always the same. But let me ask you what came first, the egg or the chicken? Brodie Dear Sea I notice your gorgeous shell fish crawling amongst you I take time to notice your beautiful paua, while it’s horrid outside puts me off, the inside tells me something else All the stunning colours pulled into one I have one question How do your amazing paua get their amazing shells? Kaiah A couple of bits: As always: To reiterate a message that we try to reinforce constantly – if there is anything you want to know about the school or if you have any feedback – anyone is welcome to pop in or ring at any time. We work to contact you if we think your child has done something amazing or if we have a concern, so would appreciate the same courtesy in return. It’s about keeping in touch and working together!
