n my view this Jaguar XF Sportbrake certainly has sleek and sporty goodlooks. Wherever it was parked it attracted a considerable amount of interestand attention from passersby. The interior was superbly finished in qualityleather and set off with polished Burr walnut trim and special Jaguar carpetmats. It also had a modern touch with its matt silver facia flowing into the twofront doors.

Both version have exhaustemissions of 139 gm/km, placing them inIrish road tax band B2, with a current annualcharge of 280 euro.

Fuel consumption, by EU testingstandards, on the model tested is, 46 mpg onthe Urban cycle, 65 mpg on the Extra urbancycle and 55 mpg on the Combined cycle.While there is only a difference of 1 mpg forthe higher powered model on the Urban cycle,its Extra urban figure is less frugal by 5 mpgand the Combined cycle figure is 6 mpg lesseconomical.

The ride and roadholding was excellent, asyou would expect from a Jaguar with thevariable ratio, speed sensitive, power assisted

Power was provided by the lower poweredversion of the 2.2 litre, four cylinder diesel engine,driving the rear wheels through an eight speedautomatic/manual gearbox. In the current Jaguarmode, the gear selector was a round knob that risesup out of the centre tunnel when the engine isswitched on. If you want to select gears manually,you twist the knob to the S position and then flickthe plus or minus paddles under the rim of thesteering wheel, depending on whether you wantupward or downward changes. I was more thanhappy to leave it in the automatic mode, as it issmooth and totally effortless and delivered all thepower I needed in every situation.

Although the test car had the lower poweredversion of the 2.2 litre diesel delivering 121 kW @3,500 rpm with 400 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, it had all theperformance I needed for my mainly city andsuburban driving. With a top speed of 209 kph (129mph), it was also perfectly at home on motorwaydriving, as its potential speed was well above mostEU national speed limits. Its zero to 100 kphacceleration time is 10.5 seconds, which may beconsidered a bit slow by some people, butremember it is a large highly versatilefamily/executive car, not some two seater sportscoupe.

One of theoptional extras fitted to thetest car was front and rearparking sensors, with aparking camera showing thearea behind the car up on thescreen in the centre of thefacia. The large exterior rearview mirrors help to makeparking much easier, helpedby the sensors and the rearview camera.

Both front seats aresuperbly comfortable andhave electrical adjustmentsfor reach, height, backrestangle and cushion tilt. Thesteering wheel also adjustsfor reach and height, sofinding a comfortable drivingposition for both the driverand the front passenger is noproblem at all, regardless oftheir height. The two outerrear seat passengers alsoenjoy a high standard ofluxury and comfort. There is afolding central armrest, withtwo cupholders. A third adultpassenger can also beaccommodated, but as inmost cars today, the centresections of both the cushionand backrest are harder andflatter and shoulder room for

all three will be much less.ISOfix fittings are provided forchild safety seats.

Dual circuit, servo assisteddisc brakes are fitted. Thesystem has an electrichandbrake and uses anti-lockwith dynamic stability andtraction control. Ventilateddiscs are fitted front and rear.The dynamic stability controlfunction offers the driver thechoice of three differentsettings, to cater for differentdriving styles andperformance requirements.

By its very nature, theSportbrake is designed to be acomfortable and versatiletouring car for the well off. Itfills this role superbly with anormal luggage capacity of0.540 cubic metres when allfive seats are in use. When
