What is Multiculturalism?Multiculturalism refers to the evolution of cultural diversity within a

jurisdiction, introduced by its selection policies and institutionalized by its settlement policies. Multicultural ideologies or policies vary widely, ranging from the advocacy of equal respect to the various cultures in a society, to a policy of promoting the maintenance of cultural diversity, to policies in which people of various ethnic and religious groups are addressed by the authorities as defined by the group to which they belong. As a prescriptive term, multiculturalism refers to one type of settlement policy that promotes the institutionalization of cultural diversity. This is often contrasted to other settlement policies such as social integration, cultural assimilation and racial segregation.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism in FashionCultural appropriation has been a growing controversy in the fashion industry

over the last fifteen years. One of the top ten issues in the fashion world today is cultural appropriation. However popular these new items may be fashion houses and designers fail to realize the negative impact it has. People are always looking for the latest trends and what new items they feel they must purchase in order to be deemed "fashionable" by societal standards. The fashion industry has been accused of becoming insensitive and unapologetic[neutrality is disputed] when it comes to cultural appropriation and encourages people to do the same all in the name for fashion. In 2012 during the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show, model Karlie Kloss was scrutinized for wearing a Native American headdress during her walk on the runaway. There was a mixed public response. People of mixed heritage were the most sensitive to headdress. USA Today ran a feature where they interviewed a woman of mixed heritage who said that the headdress is a symbol of leadership, honour and also has a religious meaning behind it. This cultural meaning was not considered in Victoria’s Secret use of the headdress as an accessory. Victoria's Secret issued an apology stating that they had no intentions of offending anyone.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation_in_the_fashion_industry

Cultural Fashion Appropriation

Cultural appropriation is so controversial in the fashion industry is due to the fact that the trends and styles these days seemed to be increasingly inspired by different cultures. In response to this criticism there has been an industry pushback by people claiming that what is actually happening is "culture appreciation.“ Companies and designers claim the use of unique cultural symbols is an effort to recognize and pay homage to that specific culture. There is debate about whether designers and fashion houses understand the history behind the clothing that they are taking from different cultures and are trying to market them to the public as the new must have accessory. It is arguable that it is still offensive because to consumers these new style trends are trends and unless the retailer or designer takes the time to educate, then the items are just being worn as a new fashion statement in the public.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation_in_the_fashion_industry

This slide contains cultural appropriation and how it has effected particular cultures, the fashion industry and influenced the public, the usefulness of it is to show how the fashion takes accessories/traditional clothing and turns it into a fashion statement.

Cultural Fashion Trends Around The World

Middle EastAlso known as a thwab, besht, kandura or suriyah, the dishdasha is a long robe traditionally worn around the Arab Gulf. In the west, we tend to shed our layers in summer but the loose-fitting thwab actually helps you keep cool in countries with hot desert territory.

Pennsylvania, USAFunny how in an attempt to wear simple and wonderfully unspectacular clothes, the Amish became trendsetters. You can spot them a mile off! John Lennon wore an Amish hat along with Amish-style clothes and Dior Homme dabbled look for its A/W 2011 show.

West AfricaA billowing wide-sleeved robe most commonly worn in West Africa. The female version is a M’boubou or kaftan (nowadays a favourite beachwear cover-up). Some are beautifully embroidered and passed down through the generations as family heirlooms.

EgyptThis type of make-up has been used as early as 10,000 BC. Its power to protect a person from the evil eye and also from the scorching desert sun reveals a practical as well as cosmetic purpose. Eyeliner’s current popularity is owed to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the 1920s which lead to the rise of the almighty panda eye. Other heavy users include designers from the 1960s such as Mary Quant, punks, goths and emos with guy-liner on the up too.

JamaicaNow, I’m pretty sure that before combs and hairbrushes, severe matting was a global problem. But you have to hand it to the Rastafari movement for pulling the look off. The first record in Jamaica was in the 1950s when the earliest Rasta movement lived in fear and “dread” of God. Asha Madela holds the first and only record for the longest dreadlocks in the Guinness Book of Records measuring 8 feet and 9 inches.http://blog.hostelbookers.com/travel/fashion-trends/

Bindi JewelleryA traditional Hindu symbol emblematic of

female energy and clarity of the third eye, the bindi has become one of the most leading fashion accessories among music industry fashionistas such as Lady Gaga, Azealia Banks, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Madonna have rocked this sparkling accessory. The exotic look has also been an attraction of controversy.

People of Hinduism religion are becoming offended with the lack of respect shown towards them by celebrities who wear the now ‘fashionable headpiece’, some Hindu’s believe that just because the celebrities are wearing it; people think its acceptable to wear it as a fashion accessory.

Some cultures are occasionally scrutinised by people for wearing their traditional wear and feel like when celebrities wear their traditional clothing it no longer is seen in the way the culture perceives but is in a way deemed ‘fashionable’.

Ripped JeansRipped jeans are jeans with rips, often on the knees and can be on the thighs. They were popular in the late 1980s during the hard rock/heavy metal era and in the 1990s and 2000s during the grunge era, and were worn by grunge artists such as Kurt Cobain. Ripped jeans remain popular as they are still sold in stores. In early 2010, ripped jeans came back in style as a 90s revival, but were sometimes introduced as Distressed - similar to ripped jeans, but the horizontal sewing point was removed to look like it was distressed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripped_jeans

This slide contains what ripped jeans are often worn with, when exactly they became popular, artists who’ve worn them, the return to them within the fashion industry with a new style and a new look identified with more than one name.

MA-1 Bomber JacketsMuch of menswear owes its allegiance to military history. From shirting to outerwear, most of our most commonly worn gear comes straight out of your local military base. For those who dig a little deeper, you'll discover a rich clothing history that's not only rooted in functionality, but style and design.

The bomber jacket—or MA-1 if we're being technical—has a longstanding history that stretches from the middle of the 20th Century into today. Starting as a jacket that was best suited for chilly, cramped cockpits, the jacket has become into an outerwear staple that's seen high fashion reinterpretations for the modern man. Here's how it evolved from standard issue outerwear to the wardrobe staple in your closet.

When making the switch to MA-1 jackets, which occurred between 1949 to 1950, a few changes were made to the B-15 style. Most notably, the fur collar was replaced with a knit collar, primarily because the fur collar got in the way of the parachute harness. An orange liner was added to help promote rescue visibility in the event of a plane crash, making the jacket reversible. A nylon body became the standard due to the relatively new (at the time) material's ability to remain dry and prevent rain or water from soaking into the jacket.

While we associate the Army's “sage green” with just about anything military related, the original colour of bomber jackets were in a “midnight blue.” During the course of the Korean War, and especially during the beginning of the '60s and the Vietnam War era, the jacket was shifted to the sage green colour in order to more effectively camouflage soldiers in countryside's with dense vegetation and plant life.
