WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A LAY FLAT FIRE HOSEThere are performance values that should be taken into account when assessing or comparing hoses.
Many of these values are stipulated by hose standards, both domestic and international, however other parameters and desirable propertiesare the result of experience in the manufacture and use of hoses.
In this document we will explain some of the most important parameters which the purchaser of hose needs to take into account when decidingon the type or quality of hose needed.
WORKING PRESSURE, TEST PRESSUREAND BURST PRESSURE
These values reflect the safety factors for a hose in use, i.e.under pressure.
Normally fire hoses and industrial hoses conform to the followingrule:
Working pressure: PProof pressure test: 2xPShort length burst pressure: 3xP, minimum.Kink burst pressure: 2xP, minimum.
ABRASION RESISTANCE
The higher the value of this parameter, the longer the hose willlast when used on rough surfaces. If abrasion resistance is lowthe hose outer will quickly wear through, leading to damageof the textile and hose failure.
Abrasion resistance tests measure the ability of a hose to resistdamage from general wear and tear, as well as resistance todragging over rough concrete and other severe surfaces.
Abrasion resistance is measured using equipment that abradesthe hose cover. In the case of BS the results are expressed asthe number of double strokes of the abrasive at failure. Anothervery popular test is the TABER abrasion test which measuresweight loss of the hose cover after a specified number ofabrasive cycles.
ADHESION BETWEEN LAYERS
This parameter greatly influences the resistance to abrasion, resistance to tearing and the service life of the hose.
A high level of adhesion between the layers ensures thatdelamination does not occur. If delamination occurs the textilereinforcement is damaged and the hose fails. The best hosesutilise chemical and physical adhesion.
Adhesion levels are expressed in force per unit width, forexample, Kg per 25.4mm, kN per meter or lb per inch.
SWELL AND ELONGATION
Hose swell is expressed as a percentage, and is the ratio ofthe diameter measured at two different pressures. The pressuresused are normally governed by National or Internationalstandards.
Extension or Elongation is also expressed as a percentage andis usually the ratio between the unpressurised length and thelength at working or test pressure.
As the diameter of the hose increases, due to swell, the pressureloss within the hose reduces. For this reason hoses with highswell are preferred.
Hose extension under pressure is important, if extension is toohigh the hose will snake.
The ideal fire hose will be designed to minimise pressure lossand avoid hose stability problems.Hose burst pressure design must take into account the amountof swell and extension at working pressure.
PRESSURE DROP / FRICTION LOSS
Friction loss equals pressure drop. The main parameters are:Length of hose: the longer the length of hose the greaterthe pressure loss.Diameter of hose: the larger the diameter the lower thepressure loss.Velocity of fluid: the higher the velocity, the greater thepressure loss.Lining of the hose: a hose with an uneven lining will givea higher pressure loss than a similar hose which hasa smooth lining.
HEAT, TEMPERATURE and OZONE RESISTANCE
Heat resistance and resistance to both high and low temperaturesmust be considered an important point for fire hoses. Hosesare used in very cold and very hot climates and must becapable of resisting these extremes.
The hose should also be able to resist point contact of burningembers etc.Ozone resistance is also important, as hoses with poor ozoneresistance will become brittle and the cover and lining will fail.Good heat, temperature and ozone resistance will ensure along life for the hose.
WEIGHT
Hose weight is influenced by the thickness of the hose; thisthickness is the sum of lining plus cover plus reinforcement. Ahigh quality hose will have an abrasion resistant cover whichdoes not depend only on thickness, in this way the hose weightcan be minimised.
SAFETY OF HOSE AND COUPLING ASSEMBLY
It is important to remember that when in use we are dealingwith hose and couplings. The couplings and their attachmentmust be capable of higher pressure resistance than the hose.Abrupt valve closing and opening can cause water hammerwhich greatly increases the load on both hose and couplings.
For this reason it is vital to guarantee the security of the couplingassembly above the burst pressure of the hose.
In addition to the above the hose should always burst alongits length i.e. a weft break, the hose should never break into2 pieces. For this reason the hose should be designed withmore strength in the longitudinal direction.
BEND RADIUS · DEPLOYMENT RADIUS
A low value of bend radius at both normal working pressureand low pressures will give a more flexible and manoeuvrablehose and avoid the possibility of hose kinks cutting off thewater supply.
There are several standard tests which measure the bend radiusat varying pressures. In general, the higher the pressure in the hose the better thebend radius performance.
A high quality hose will have good bend radius performanceat low pressures, as well as at working pressure.
For the large diameter hoses over 152 mm (6 inch.), it is notpossible to bend at working pressures. In this case, thedeployment radius is used for comparison.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
It is impossible to list all the substances that a hose could comeinto contact with during use, but good resistance to aggressiveproducts which are in general use must be assured.
Resistance to chemicals is provided by the properties of thecover and lining polymer and by the properties of the textilereinforcement.
Details on chemical resistance of cover and lining material willbe provided by any reputable hose manufacturer. In the caseof the textile jacket, polyester is resistant to acids while polyamide resists alkaline substances. In general type 3 hoseshave better chemical resistance than type 1 or type 2 hoses.
KINK RESISTANCE
When a hose kinks, 3 things happen:
· The flow through the hose is reduced.· At the point of the kink a protusion is formed which is vulnerable to abrasion.· The burst performance of the hose is reduced at the point of the kink.
Bearing this in mind, it is very important that the hose isdesigned in a way that minimises the chances of a kink forming.Careful design of the hose and its method of production enablekink performance to be maximised.
HANDLING Low weight and small coil diameter are desirable traits. Howeverthis must be a compromise as simply reducing the hose weightand thickness will reduce performance in other areas. Experiencewith users has guided us to determine the best combination.Local, National and International standards reflect the viewsof the end user. Experience is a very important point to be considered whenchoosing a product that could be the responsible of savinglives and property. TIPSA is the only manufacturer in the world able to manufactureextruded through-the-weave rubber lay flat hoses up to 12”,that can deliver massive amounts of water with optimalperformance. TIPSA has been manufacturing lay flat hoses over 60 years, and it would be possible to circumfere the Earth more than 3times with the amount of hoses manufactured.
