    Gypsy site objections

NESTON Town Council is voicing its

objections to proposals for a permanent

gypsy and traveller site in the town.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has

earmarked a number of sites across the

county which should be set aside for the

travelling community. One of these is

the Buildwas Road area, on the Clayhill

    Industrial Estate.

The Mayor of Neston, Cllr Martin Barker,

said: Neston Town Council has previously

informed CW&C that the view of the

Planning & Environment Committee is that

there are no suitable locations in the Neston

area for gypsy and traveller sites.

The issue will be discussed by town

councillors at their meeting on 4th October.

WORK has been carried out to

dredge the main gutters on the

Parkgate marshes in an effort to

cut the mosquito menace. This has

resulted in the creation of the two

    new ponds. A public consultation

will take place regarding plans for

viewing platforms on Saturday 29thOctober at St Thomass Church

    between 10am and 4pm.

NEW RANGE NOW ON DISPLAY FOR 2011

YEAR ve and year 6 pupils at Parkgate Primary School have started the new school

year with a very special guest. The classes welcomed local MP for Ellesmere Port

and Neston, Andrew Miller to nd out more about the life of an MP, how elections

are organised in this country and why voting is important. Pupils were also given the

chance to ask Andrew a series of interesting questions, where we found out many

more interesting facts. We found out that hearing Nelson Mandela speak to Parliament

was a particular highlight as an MP and that Andrew works hard not only for the local

area but to also develop science and technology across the country.

The visit was part of the new topic of study entitled Leading the World. Both classes

will now take inspiration from the visit to help with their own election campaign for a

class council. Each class will then go on to discover how other countries all around the

world are run and learn more about key world leaders from history.

The school hopes the visit will see some budding politicians from Parkgate in the

    future.

    NESToNS coal mining history

    is being celebrated with the

launch of the Neston CollieryAudio Trail. The new audio

guide consists of 15 short mp3

    tracks that can be downloaded

    from www.neston-audio-trails.co.uk.

    Said Little Neston and Burton

    Councillor Kay Loch: This latest

    trail provides a fascinating tour

    revealing the hidden history

under our feet. I would encourage

everyone to download the trail and

learn about the history of Neston

The Colliery Trail joins three other award

winning trails; Neston Parish Church Trail,

Neston Town Centre Trail and Parkgate

    Parade.

The rst Audio Trails were awarded The

Best Community Project at the 2008

    Cheshire Community Pride Competition,

as being particularly suitable for young

people and for people with visual

impairment, who nd leaets less user-

    friendly.

    Local historian Anthony Annakin-Smith,

    has produced interpretation panels at

the site of the colliery, he and other local

    historians provided information for the

new Audio Trail script and can be heard

    during the trail commentary.

Anthony explained: This was the site

of the regions Industrial Revolution. The

rst steam engine anywhere in Wirral and

west Cheshire was sited here during the

early years of industrialisation and later

    the great engineer, George Stephenson,

visited the site. The mine was also

extraordinary for being one of the very

few in the country to use underground

canals to move the coal. The rst colliery, Ness Colliery, owned by

the Stanley family of Hooton, opened in

1759, another mine operated in adjacent

Little Neston, owned by the Cottingham

family, 1819 to 1849. Both mines had

closed by 1855, when silting of the Dee

Estuary had made it difcult to move coal

    in bulk.

    Operations restarted as Neston Colliery

in 1874, using a newly built railway. Thebusiness went through several hands

before closing permanently in 1927. At its

peak, in 1921, the nal business Wirral

    Colliery employed about 350 people.

    Less is more for local

    Woman of the Year slimmers

AfTEr losing almost 17st between them and winning a local slimmingcompetition, the only thing thats big about Karen Jones, Helen Bradley,

Charlotte and Jackie Morgan are their beaming smiles.

The girls, from Neston, lost weight with their local Slimming World group at Dee Scout

Centre, Burton Road, Little Neston and their transformation hasnt gone unnoticed as

they have just been named the Neston groups Woman of the Year 2011.

Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are already severely overweight and

at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and

cancer. Slimming Worlds Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements

of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their

families.Helen Bradley joined Slimming World in October 2006 after becoming increasingly

unhappy with her weight. She says: I started to put on weight after having my son.

I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable.

Slimming World is completely different, I never have to go hungry and now Im at my

target weight Im the happiest Ive been in years!

When the 41-year-old started following Slimming Worlds famous Food Optimising

eating plan she immediately loved it. Its a

    healthy eating plan, nutritionally balanced

and based on satisfying even the largest

of appetites so slimmers never have to gohungry. Now, Helen lls up on unlimited

amounts of everyday foods like fruit and

veg, lean meat and sh, pasta, potatoes,

rice and pulses which are all lling foods

yet naturally quite low in calories and

fat. Shes cut out many of the processed

convenience foods and sugary snacks she

used to rely on. Helen loves trying out all

the delicious slimming recipes she picks

up from other members at her SlimmingWorld group.

She says: My family and friends are

all amazed how much I can eat and still

lose weight. I cook for them now and they

cant believe its all healthy food because

it tastes so good. Everyones been really

    supportive.

From the minute I walked into Slimming

World, the support Ive received from my

Consultant Jayne and the rest of the grouphas been brilliant, adds Helen.

ThE Friends of Park Fields held a

Bat detection evening recently on the

Cweld and Pak fields at Pakgate.Around 20 Local residents, young and

old, gathered at St Thomas Church, in

Parkgate, where they were told about the

many varieties of bats in the UK and their

    various habitats. Lawrence Armstrong,

a Bat expert from the Merseyside and

West Lancashire bat group gave us a

fascinating insight into the life of bats,

who are warm blooded creatures that

usually have just one pup a year, havewings supported by a bone structure like

our hands and ngers, and are covered in

fur. In summer they can eat 3000 insects

in one night, and in winter they hibernate

in crevices of buildings, caves and trees.

They learned much more about the bats,

and then after partaking in some light

refreshment, the group moved to the

eld with their Bat detecting equipment

to search for bats. They were notdisappointed and Common Pipistrelle

    (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) small, uttery

and low ying - and Noctule (Nyctalus

noctula) larger, faster and higher ying

    - bats were seen in abundance. Othersspecies were present, but could not be

    identied with certainty beyond being

members of the Myotis group of bats,

    which includes the Daubentons (Myotis

    daubentonii), Natterer (Myotis nattereri),

    Whiskered (Myotis mystacinus) and

    Brandts (Myotis brandtii) bats. Natterers

bats have been identied over the eld on

    previous evenings.

The Friends will also be resuming theirVolunteer work days shortly. After

working on gapping and restoring the

hedge line at the top of the Coweld, we

intend to plant a length of new hedge

towards the bottom of the eld, and will

need help with the planting. Dates for

future Volunteer Days will be displayed on

the Notice Boards, so if you would like to

get involved please contact Chris Try, on

335 7472 or just turn up on the day.

General Fiction: Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman

Recently emigrated from Ghana to one of Londons enormous housing projects, young

Harrison Opuku nds wonder in his new and ever-expanding world. Then one of his

classmates, a boy known for his crazy basketball skills, seemed to have been murdered

for his dinner. Armed with a pair of camouage binoculars and detective techniques

absorbed from television shows like CSI, Harri and his best friend, Dean, plot to bring

the perpetrator to justice. Told in Harris infectious voice and multicultural slang, Pigeon

English follows in the tradition of our great novels of friendship and adventure.

Based on the Damilola Taylor murder case, this wonderful funny, sad, deep book by

a brand new author has already been shortlisted for this years Booker Prize. I foundit completely gripping from the rst page to the jaw-dropping nal sentence- which

probably means it wont win! But I defy anyone not to love it.

Biography: Back from the Brink: 1,000 Days at Number 11

    by Alistair Darling

In the summer of late 2007, shares of Northern Rock went into

free-fall causing a run on the bank - the rst since the Great

Depression. Northern Rock was only the rst: in the ensuing

months, Alistair Darling stood rm in the eye of this perfect storm -

all over the world nancial institutions thought too big to fail were

falling prey to the lethal toxicity of the US sub-prime mortgagemarket. Back from the Brink tells the gripping story of one

thousand days of crisis. The book describes how, as chancellor, he

attended all night meetings at the White House, interspersed with

confrontations with the titans of international banking; as readers,

we nd ourselves in the rooms where the destinies of millions

weighed heavily on the shoulders of a few. Back from the Brink

is a gripping and immediate account of an unprecedented global nancial catastrophe.

Alistair Darlings knowledge and understanding make this not only a unique perspective

on the events that rocked global capitalism, but a vital and fascinating historical

    document.Cookery: Ramsays Best Menus

Gordon Ramsays last TV series, The F Word, culminated in a competition to nd

the nations favourite local restaurant. His new series, Ramsays Best Restaurants,

continues this theme, focusing on the countrys favourite international cuisines: Italian,

French, Spanish, Mediterranean, British, Chinese, Indian, Moroccan, Mexican and

Middle Eastern etc etc. To complement the series Gordon has here selected not just his

favourite menus from these cuisines, but also the perfect Spring, Summer, Autumn and

Winter menus. His 52 chosen menus, comprising 156 recipes for starters, main courses

and desserts, are displayed in such a way, on sliced pages, that the reader can mix and

match to create their own favourite menu for any occasion and any time of year. The

result is an incredible 140,000 different menu choices in stunning colour photography.Mouthwatering!
