President’s Report

As we approach season 2015/16 the NJCA is working to implement playing formats and guidelines set down by

Cricket Australia. Change is difficult to manage and at times, difficult to understand. The number of teams playing

cricket under NJCA banner has reduced by 33% in the past five seasons. This reduction has occurred both at entry

level and in returning players.

Entry Level; The people who put themselves forward as volunteers for clubs, as delegates or and NJCA committee

positions have a level of passion for our game. Sadly the people who avoid registering their children for cricket often

do so because they have a misconception of what junior cricket is and the impact it will have on their family. The

change to T20 Blast by both Cricket Australia and NJCA is designed to create a fun family initial cricket experience for

both player and family, whether you are a cricket lover or someone who is looking for an engaging activity for your

child.

T20 Blast is firstly designed to be more enjoyable both for participant and player. Non cricket families still equate

junior cricket to test cricket and think that they are stranded at a ground on a stinking hot day for all day. T20 Blast is

also designed to show that cricket for 7 – 12 years olds is quick, fun and family friendly.

The Big Bash has introduced a new cricket spectator. In Northern NSW there is an average of 80,000 people viewing

each Big Bash game on TV. Nationally a Big Bash game attracts 50% more viewers than an average NRL or AFL game.

When attending a game, 80% of children attending don’t play cricket. There is a new cricket fan out there and we

have the chance to turn that fan and family into a player and volunteer.

The young players who have a passion to be the best cricketer that they can be are also winners with changes being

put forward. For the upcoming season the NJCA is introducing compulsory coaching accreditation for U/11 coaches.

In subsequent seasons this will be expanded through the age groups until we achieve the desired outcome that all

junior coaches are accredited. Feedback from our player survey shows that players desire and enjoy vibrant

rewarding training sessions and the opportunity to learn new skills.

In2CRICKET is no less important than previous seasons. For 300+ players and their families in2CRICKET is their first

introduction to participating in cricket and your club. Help is available to establish and run your centre.

Retention of players; Adjustments are being proposed that will bring some of our playing limitations into line with

the recommendations of Cricket Australia. Along with more vibrant training sessions, the greater the opportunity for

every player to actively participate in each game, the greater the chance that they will have a cricket experience

worth returning for next season. Teams come back, individuals move on.

Thank you to all of our passionate volunteers across junior cricket, the opportunity for young players to play simply

doesn’t occur without you. Thank you to the NJCA Committee members for the past season. Change is challenging,

the conversation has been intense at times. Ultimately last season ran very smoothly with mostly tight competitions

and effective support offered to our clubs.

Sharyn has again proven to be a valued asset to this committee, our clubs and our players and is recognised across

various cricket bodies in NSW for her skills and dedication.

Sincerely,

Jason McKendry

Administrator’s Report

Season 2014-2015 was another successful year for junior cricket in Newcastle due the enthusiastic players, parents

and amazing club volunteers that contribute so much of their time and energy. Without committee members,

coaches, managers, scorers, umpires, and parents it would not be possible to have such a fantastic competition.

The NJCA is committed to providing the best junior competition possible and there have been some really special

highlights and opportunities this year that I would like to mention:

6er’s T20 Competition

The NJCA invited all local junior clubs to participate in the first ever 6er’s T20 league in Newcastle during season

2013/2014. The competition was open to U12, U14 and U16 age groups and consisted of up to 3 midweek T20

games where the eventual winners of the local competition would progress through to the Country Finals. The

winners of the Country Finals would then play the winners of the City Finals in the State Final of the Weet-Bix Cup at

North Sydney Oval.

Newcastle U12 in action at North Sydney Oval

By all accounts the players really enjoyed the T20 format played as a midweek fixture and the NJCA would like to

encourage all clubs to enter teams in Season 2015/2016.

2015 ICC World Cup Tour

Newcastle City, Western Suburbs, Hamilton Wickham

Colts, Tigers, Stockton, and Valentine Eleebana all

entered teams in the competition. On Sunday 8th

February, 2015 Newcastle hosted the Country Finals

of the Weet-Bix Cup at Smith Park and the Newcastle

City U12 team convincingly won their age division and

progressed through the State Finals. The team

continued their amazing success by defeating

Caringbah and becoming State Champions (full story

following).

On Saturday December 13th, 2015 Newcastle players had the

opportunity to have their photo taken with the ICC World

Cup trophy at the Newcastle Foreshore. A further public

event was held by Destination NSW at Smith Park on

Saturday 7th February, 2015 and Sunday 8th February, 2015.

Visitors were able to lie back in deckchairs

and watch the live cricket action on the big

screen, visit the travelling cricket museum

featuring items from the Bradman Museum,

participate in cricket-themed activities and

skills clinics, and enjoy a hit of cricket with

Nathan Bracken.

NSW Blues v WA Warriors at No 1 Sportsground

Macquarie Sports Cricket Clinic

On the eve of the Sheffield Shield match nearly 300 young local cricketers and coaches participated in the Macquarie

Sports Clinics at No 5 and 6 Sportsground where they got to have a hit with visiting NSW Blues players. The support

from clubs and coaches in nominating their players made the event truly memorable. This was an amazing

opportunity for Newcastle junior cricket enthusiasts and we are grateful to Macquarie Sports Bank, Cricket NSW, and

Neil McDonald for organising this great event.

Sean Abbott with some local Newcastle players

Newcastle hosted a Sheffield

Shield match for the first time

since 2009 between the NSW

Blues and WA Warriors from 25

– 28 February, 2015. Amongst

those filling volunteer support

roles were a number of junior

cricketers who were involved

operating sightscreens on each

day. It was great to see so

many junior players and

families attending the game

to enjoy quality First Class

Cricket.

Newcastle Carnivals

Newcastle hosted the U11 Ron Arendt’s Memorial Shield from Monday 5th until Thursday 8th January, 2015 again this

season. This year we had 16 teams participate, the largest number of teams since the carnival was established in

2007. We were very pleased to welcome teams from Maitland District Cricket Association and North West Sydney

Hurricanes. Additionally, the inclusion of an all girls team from Newcastle was very exciting for the carnival and well

received by visiting Associations. We had a week of beautiful weather in Newcastle for the U11 carnival and the

competition was played with true sportsmanship. Parramatta District Cricket Association were the eventual winners

of the carnival, defeating North Shore in the Grand Final.

Newcastle once again hosted the U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield from Sunday 18th until Thursday 22nd, 2015. The week

proved very challenging due to weather and unfortunately all matches on Monday and Tuesday had to be cancelled

due to wet and dangerous conditions. To ensure our young visitors were still able to enjoy some cricket we

organised a round robin tournament at Thornton Indoor Sport Centre on Tuesday. This was extremely well received

by visiting coaches and players as many of them had never played indoor cricket.

To allow all teams an equal opportunity of playing in the Grand Final on Thursday, fixtures were rearranged. Teams

participated in two 25 over matches on Wednesday rather than the scheduled 50 over match. Changing the format

allowed all teams to compete against all teams in their pool and provided a fairer outcome. Feedback from all

visiting Associations was extremely positive. The NJCA received numerous compliments on the professional way in

which the challenging situation was handled and our ability to provide a fantastic carnival despite the weather.

Ground Improvements

Each season the NJCA commits $10,000 to assist clubs with wicket and practice net upgrades for their grounds. We

were able to assist with the following projects in season 2014-2015:

Waratah Mayfield/NJCA Representative Grounds – replacement of full synthetic at Waratah 4;

Waratah Mayfield/NJCA Representative Grounds – replacement of full synthetic at Waratah 5;

Toronto Workers – contribution to full synthetic replacement at Toronto 2;

Toronto Workers – contribution to full synthetic replacement at Todd Street Oval;

Toronto Workers – contribution to full synthetic replacement at Rathmines Oval;

Toronto Workers – contribution to full synthetic replacement at Finnan Oval;

Wallsend RSL Diggers – contribution to replace half deck synthetic at Federal Park 1;

Wallsend RSL Diggers – contribution to replace full synthetic at Federal Park 2;

Belmont – contribution to repairs at Barton Ovals 1 & 2, and Lumsden Oval

Charlestown Junior – contribution to full synthetic upgrade at Reay Park;

Elliotts Lambton – contribution to cricket net upgrade at Lambton Park ;

NJCA spare ground – repairs to synthetic at Heaton Park Oval

Social Media

The Newcastle Junior Cricket Association Facebook page has proved very popular this year with nearly 700 followers.

Feedback suggests that parents really appreciate the addition of this communication tool due to the easy

dissemination of information and the constant flow of interesting relevant content. It has proven to be a particularly

useful tool for communicating wet weather changes. Next season will see the addition of Twitter and Instagram.

Players and parents will be encouraged to post photos and game updates to provide live information to other users.

Pink Stumps Day

Congratulations to all teams who participated in Pink Stumps Day 2015. Below are some photos of just a few teams

who took part this season:

Interdistrict Competition with Maitland District Junior Cricket

Season 2014/2015 saw the incorporation of a trial interdistrict competition with Maitland District Cricket

Association. Due to only having four teams in U14 Division One the NJCA initiated contact with Maitland DCA in an

effort to provide more variety and competition for our four teams. Maitland were very enthusiastic about the

competition and as a result the four teams played four games against teams from Seaham, Thornton, Maitland City

and North Maitland. The initiative was very well received by all involved and the NJCA and MDJCA plan to work

together again next year to add value to both competitions.

Thank you

I would like to say thank you to the club volunteers whom I work with on a regular basis. It is a massive job working

as a volunteer in club administration and your efforts in managing your club and distributing information to your

committee, players and parents are appreciated. Thank you for making the junior cricket community vibrant and

friendly. I would also like to thank the NJCA Management Committee for your support and trust.

I am very much looking forward to Season 2015/2016 and the exciting changes about to happen in Cricket

Newcastle.

Newcastle City U12s – Winners of NSW T20 State Final

Written by Stephen Connors, Coach

On Sunday 29th March 2015, just before the Australian team won the World Cup, a Newcastle City Club team made up of U12 players who had recently won the Country Championships travelled to Hurstville Oval in Sydney and won the State Weet Bix T20 Cup against the metro winners, Caringbah. Caringbah won the toss and batted first. They posted 3/97 off their 20 overs with City doing a good job of keeping the runs under 100 in the last 4 overs, given Caringbah were 2/84 after 16 overs. Angus McTaggart (1/14 off 4 overs), Angus Tait (1/11 off 2 overs) & Clare Webber (1/10 off 2 overs) took wickets, with Taj Annan (0/13 off 4 overs) being the most economical. Looking for 5 runs an over, City started the run chase with unaccustomed nervous running between the wickets and lost 3 wickets in the first 4 overs, however kept up with the run rate throughout the innings. Jake Hainsworth and Clare Webber then steadied the ship with a 27 run partnership getting to 44 at the halfway mark before Jake was runout. At 5/45, City were under pressure but Clare (32) and Angus McTaggart (25 no) played beautifully for a 52 run partnership which got the team home with an over to spare. Clare Webber was announced the “Player of the Match” by the 2 Sydney Umpires and presented with a bat signed by the NSW Blues players. All of the players in the squad had contributed with special individual efforts in one or more games over the 8 games needed to win the State Championship and I believe (would need to confirm this fact) they are the first country team to win the U12 Weetbix Cup.

The 14 Players in the City U12’s Team who have played as a squad since November last year to get to the State Final are: William Anson, Taj Annan, Patrick Charters, William Connors, Jake Hainsworth, Jack Hartigan, Jacob Humphrey, Angus McTaggart, Tom Sharpe, Cooper Southam, Angus Tait, Joshua Taylor, Daniel Wall, Clare Webber.

Life Membership Presentation – Jason McKendry

Jason first became involved with junior cricket when his son commenced Milo Cricket at Charlestown Junior Cricket Club in 2005/06. Jason has been an active within the cricket community 2006, firstly with his club and later the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association. Tigers Junior Cricket - 2006 until present - Jason has held a coaching position with Tigers Junior Cricket for the past seven years. For two of those seven years, Jason coached two teams as the club were short on coaches. Jason did not have any children playing in the second team but happily donated his time. Jason has been on the Tigers Junior Cricket committee since 2006 holding numerous positions including Secretary and Registrar, often holding more than one position each year. Jason has been actively involved in selecting trophies and arranging club presentations throughout this time. Jason was instrumental in the merger between Kotara South Junior Cricket Club and Adamstown Junior Cricket Club in 2010 (forming Tigers Junior Cricket). Jason spent countless

hours in meetings with other clubs throughout this time and formed a partnership with senior club Merewether DCC to ensure junior players would have a pathway from juniors to seniors. Jason was responsible for arranging funding through grant applications for both the nets and new turf wickets at Lugar Park. Jason also arranged the contractors to complete this project and has always worked hard to improve the grounds for our players. Darren Linsley, President of the Tigers Junior Cricket club said “Without Jason’s input, we would still be just plain old Kotara South Junior Cricket Club with 3-4 teams struggling with numbers. It was through Jason’s hard work that we formed Tigers JCC. Newcastle Junior Cricket Association - 2007 until present - Jason joined the NJCA committee in 2007 at a time when

seven of the previous nine committee members all decided not to re stand for election. He has worked tirelessly to

promote and make better junior cricket in Newcastle. Since he came on board, he has been an integral part in

setting up competitions and draws, he has met with all local councils over funding, grounds and facilities and has

been a strong voice within the zone structure to make better cricket in Newcastle. He has attended many meetings

in Sydney for representative and cricketing workshops.

He has been our Representative Manager for many years and dealt with both the NSW DCA and the NSW IDCA structures. The Representative Manager itself is a very big job that has included competition arrangements, representative trials, clothing and training, and in addition to that he worked with both the Hunter Academy and the Emerging Blues programs. He has put in an enormous amount of work into our two carnivals as well as our Kookaburra Cup and Bradman Cup teams. Jason has changed the way we structure junior cricket in Newcastle though vision and adaption of CNSW and CA policies and guidelines and has supported our CNSW Regional Managers. He has been through a number of crises at committee level and handled them with integrity, stability and with outcomes that have benefited our players and the Association. He remains level headed and thinks outside the box to ensure the best result for not only our juniors but for our cricketing fraternity here in Newcastle.

In addition to his role with junior cricket, Jason has tirelessly pursued the goal of improving cricket in Newcastle by

working with the NDCA to improve pathways for our junior players. The successful NDCA T20 U15 competition has

only come about through Jason’s vision and persistence.

The committee of the NJCA is extremely grateful for the incredible amount of work that Jason McKendry has done

for all young cricketers in Newcastle and believe the presentation of a Life Membership is well deserved.

Game Development Report – Hunter Region

Executive Summary

Cricket NSW Game Development continues to invest strongly in the future of the game by

delivering programs in schools and the community to inspire the next generation of fans and

players. The 2014/15 season strategy focused on sustainability, with an increased focus on club

pathway programs. To support this strategy, Game Development invested in 21 full-time

Development Managers and 4 Development Leaders strategically placed in Hubs (Newcastle, ACT,

Sydney Harbour and GWS).

Principles to Evolve Game Development

1. Controlling First Impressions – the first experience that a child has in cricket is critical to their

ongoing involvement in the game. CNSW will deliver the programs for the 5-10 age groups with volunteers taking

over above this point.

2. From Sampling to Sustainability – whilst maintaining our impressive school participation numbers it is

critical we move focus to players and environments.

3. Bridging the gap between paid and unpaid administrators – being more connected to and

influencing the club system.

4. From tracksuits to business suits – shifting the role of the regional cricket manager towards

acting as a ‘CEO’ for cricket in their region.

5. A Sport for All – Introducing new markets (female/multicultural/social cricket) to the game.

6. Face of the game – Game Development staff to be recognised by internal and external stakeholders as the

key cricket contacts in their region (especially with government).

Cricket Participation 2014-15

Participation across the state rose 12.89% in the season 2014/15 to 354,955. As outlined in Figure 1, this growth

can be attributed to a sharp rise in the number of children participating in Cricket NSW managed school programs to

support the transition to club cricket. Key insights include:-

Increased accuracy in data collection methods for this reporting year.

Growth in the schools segment was in the programs Cricket NSW has direct influence over (T20

Blast School Cup events, MILO in2CRICKET Skills and School Ambassador programs).

Club growth was attributed to the increased uptake of MyCRICKET in regional centres, leading to

increased accuracy and improved data collection methods.

11

Impact of Participation Programs in the Hunter Region

The Hunter Region encompasses cricket associations and clubs in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. Participation rose

26.9% in the season 2014/15 to 26,353. As outlined in Figure 2, this was achieved through an increased delivery

Cricket NSW managed programs to support the transition to club cricket. Key insights include:-

Significant growth across the schools segment reflects the continued investment Cricket NSW is

making to support the transition from the schools to clubs.

Teachers registering as School Ambassadors increased cricket sessions in the schoolyard.

T20 Blast School Cups were boosted by the inclusion of a number of intra-school events.

A Private Provider program was initiated to increase the field-force and professional delivery.

Growth in Indoor Cricket was attributed to accuracy in data collection methods and the evolving space of

on-site cricket delivery for schools.

Hunter Highlights

An outline of key programs, promotions and events delivered in the Hunter during 2014/15 included:-

The Toyota Country Blitz featuring NSW Blues players Sean Abbott and Pat Pisel visiting

Singleton, Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle meeting sponsors, school students, cricket

volunteers and the media.

Cricket World Cup promotions conducted before and after Christmas and involved activations for school

students and the local community in Newcastle, Cessnock and Singleton.

4,600 Primary School (years 3-6) and High School (year 7-8) Students took part in MILO T20

Blast School Cup events across the Hunter.

Singleton JCA established the first T20 Blast Centre in the region and achieved an immediate

25% growth in participation.

100% compliance has been achieved in the use of MyCricket to administer competitions.

A MyCricket administration seminar had the highest attendance of any run across the state. More than

70 volunteers participated in Level One Coaching Courses.

A Winter Development Squad 8-week pilot program was conducted for junior players at

Charlestown Indoor Sports.

Activations around the Sheffield Shield match between NSW and Western Australia included a

coach seminar with Trevor Bayliss and ‘Henry’ Lawson, more than 300 kids attending a coaching clinic

featuring Blues players and 150 students participating in T20 Blast games during

lunchtime On Ground Entertainment on the Friday.

12

During March and April, a Cricket Australia facility pilot program involving detailed site auditing of

infrastructure at 253 Hunter cricket grounds was undertaken. Detail collected included the number and quality of

pitches, practice nets, change rooms and spectator facilities including photos. The audit tested i-pad data

collection and program compatibility with a report presented to the CA Board. As one of the first regions audited,

the Hunter will have up-to-date facility data captured for use in grant applications and representations to local

government.

Closing Remarks

As well as introducing children to cricket, the CNSW Game Development Department is evolving its programs to

provide five clear outcomes:

Articulate a clear participation next step (to junior club cricket)

Build a database of contacts to continue the engagement process

Create fans by connecting participants with the BBL sides

Provide media opportunities to change the perceptions of cricket

Raise revenue for reinvestment in the game

This blueprint will ensure more players, fans and more support for our cricketing community.

Volunteers continue to be the driving force behind associations and clubs across the Hunter

contributing hundreds of hours through the summer and winter to complete tasks that often go unnoticed and

without acknowledgement. On behalf of Cricket NSW I wish to extend my appreciation to all who volunteered their

time during the season to make cricket happen in the Hunter Region.

In conclusion, thank you to everyone who supported our development initiatives during 2014-15 and

I’m looking forward to supporting associations to grow Cricket in their region in the future.

U10 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Written by Wayne Lambert, Coach U10 Development Squad The U10 Development squad was extremely successful with 36 boys attending the 6 week programme. All boys that

participated showed great enthusiasm and improved their skills and techniques over the 6 week period. There are

some very talented crickets within the squad.

12 boys played a trial game at Gloucester against Manning District with Newcastle having a compressive victory. All

the boys played very well.

A big thank to the Richardson family, the Representative Coaches that helped with the squad, and all the parents

that attended each week. It was greatly appreciated.

U11 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Written by Andrew Standing, Coach U11 Development Squad

The 2014/15 Under 11 Development Squad was formed in September 2014 when the original trial was abandoned

due to wet weather. We started with a squad of 24 but several withdrawals resulted in a final squad of 19 keen and

enthusiastic cricketers embarking on a busy schedule for the season. Early season training sessions rolled in to trial

matches against Illawarra and Inner West Harbour and then into the IDCA competition and Ron Arendts Memorial

Carnival in January.

The first game set the tone for our season and we proved to be very strong ‘chasers’. Playing away, we were set 172

by North Shore B. We chased down this score with two overs to go. Our second game was at home, where we

bowled out Central Coast for 66. We successfully chased down their total for the loss of 2 wickets in 20 overs. Our

last game before Christmas was away against eventual winners Manly. They set us a gettable 139 to win. We got off

to a solid start and a 0/30 were well placed. Disaster then struck via a run out and we proceeded to lose 9/19 before

being bowled out for 58. This was an eye opener for the boys about the standard of cricket that is played by Sydney

teams.

When we returned to our IDCA cricket in February, we hosted North Shore A. For the first time we batted and set a

competitive 148. The game was evenly poised in the 33rd over where North Shore was 3/122. On the last ball of the

over, a sickening collision between our wicket keeper Bailey Creer and substitute fielder Ben Standing saw the match

abandoned. Although the collision resulted in serious injury to Ben, requiring a trip to hospital and 12 stitches, he

wanted to ensure that the umpire knew he caught the ball.

Our 5th and last game saw a travel to meet North West Hurricanes. We were set a modest chase of 106 to win in hot

and sultry conditions. The boys fought all the way to the end and we managed to pass their total with 9 balls to

spare. This resulted in the boys finishing 4th in the regular season and saw us travel to Sydney to meet North Shore A

again. Again we batted first but a heavy dew and heavy outfield saw us struggle to post a score of 8/101. North

Shore turned the tide and comfortably chased down our total.

Our season was very respectable 3 wins 2 losses and a draw. This was a very credible result given we rotated our

players throughout the season. We often reversed our batting order for our bowling order. This was in contrast to

the Sydney teams who played ‘traditional representative cricket’. Trying to give 19 players equal opportunities

proved difficult at times. However, the boys adapted to the rotation policy and to their credit performed very well

over the course of the season.

The Ron Arendts Carnival saw the squad recruit several players to form two teams, the President’s XI and the

Chairman’s XI. The Presidents lost their first two T20 games to Parramatta (eventual winners of the carnival) and

Camden. In our third game we chased down Hornsby’s total of 138 with 1 wicket and 4 balls to spare. Our 4th game

we chased down Central Coast DCA score of 122 with 1 wicket and 20 balls to spare. The last pair added 13 runs and

a dropped catch with 5 runs to go made it an exciting finish. The final game saw us chase Illawarra’s total of 152. At

6/145 and plenty of overs to go, the game was in the bag. However, the ghosts of Manly past revisited and we lost

5/5 to be bowled out for 150 and lost by 2 runs with 3 overs to go.

My thanks go to Rob Redpath, David Stanbridge and Phil Stanbridge for their assistance with training and game days.

To all the parents, thank you for your support and encouragement of all the boys throughout the season. To those

who helped with scoring a special thank you. Finally to Rob Potter and Wayne Lambert who willingly took on the

responsibility of the Chairman’s XI. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.

U12 PRESIDENTS TEAM

Written by Jason Styles, Coach U12 Presidents The rep season for the U12 Presidents was for most the first experience at rep level cricket. Coaching the group was

as enjoyable as it was rewarding. Seeing the boys develop and learn the ‘art’ of cricket was a personal best moment.

Our strongest regular season performance was our last game, in heat on a Federal Park that offered no value for

shots due to an outfield you would lose the ball in, the boys come together and really performed. Against Manly on

a humid Smith Park we struggled against some good swing bowling, unsure of the rule and on umpires assurance

Manly attempted the outright only to see our boys dig in with gusto and bat the rest of the day, if nothing else it was

a lesson you can’t get at training, they learnt the true meaning of batting overs and respecting your wicket.

Congratulations to all of the boys, they played like a team and played some great cricket at times and were in most

games. Our Lismore Carnival was a roller coaster, narrowly losing two games, Coach killers some may say. We had

some excellent examples of great sportsmanship and I can say with pride the boys represented Newcastle in the

finest manor. We won our only game defeating a confident Toowoomba who rolled us for less than 60 on a genuine

5th day turf wicket for our boys to come hold them to 37. I think though the highlight of our carnival was our daily

afternoon pool sessions at the motel. A big thank you to all the parents. I could not have been more proud to have

coached this fine team of young men.

U12 DCA TEAM

Written by Cameron Hainsworth, Coach Under 12 DCA

In what can be described as a character building season the Under 12’s entered their first DCA competition in

representative cricket. The boys played 5 DCA competition games before competing in the Lismore carnival.

After 2 promising trial games the boys comprehensively won their first game even sending the opposition back in

chasing an outright result. This was followed by 4 losses. The team tried their hardest in all games. The bowling and

fielding improved every game but for some reason we had trouble scoring runs and creating big partnerships. The

pressure of chasing runs got to some of the batsmen as shown in their shot selection.

In our first home game we were honoured to have the current senior Newcastle captain Mark Littlewood address

the team. Mark handed out “baggy greens” to the new players and spoke about his times representing Newcastle

junior teams and ultimately captaining the senior team.

Before we left for Lismore we also had an afternoon training with Merewether Cricket Club. Not only were the boys

greeted by some of their first grade team they were able to train with them. The looks on their faces were priceless

and behaviour was of the highest standard.

Off to Lismore we went not knowing what to expect and all refreshed after the Christmas break. Over the 4 days we

played 2x25 over games the first 2 days, 1x45 over game and a 30 over game on the final day. In a great achievement

for the team we finished 2nd in our pool behind Manly-Warringah. Our bowling and fielding was once again our

strength applying pressure in every game. Unfortunately poor batting was our downfall whether it was bad shot

selection, not respecting your wicket or not building partnerships.

It was an absolute pleasure coaching the boys. We were able to create a great bond and spirit in this group that can

only better them in years to come. They should all be proud of that and also the way they conducted themselves

throughout the season.

Thank you to all the parents for your support and assistance throughout the season. Some special mentions go to

Kathy Hartigan for her valued scoring of most games. Mark McLachlan for organising the training session with

Merewether Cricket Club and warming up the team every game. Lastly but not leastly Garth Annan for admirably

managing the team and being my right hand man in all aspects involved with the team.

U13 IDCA TEAM

Written by Rob Carey, Coach U13 IDCA Team The nucleus of the previous year’s squad remained and with the welcome addition of 3 new players, we started the season with high hopes but results did not go our way. 0/3 at Christmas and then losing the 1st 2 games of the Ballina Carnival saw us doing some soul searching. A tough win at the Carnival followed by another in the final game was pleasing and morale building. Returning to the IDCA Competition, we were drawn against the 5 toughest teams. The lads played some outstanding cricket and won our final 2 round games placing us 4th overall and a return match with Canterbury/Wests in the 3/4 playoff. Another away game but to the credit of this fine group of cricketers, they toughed it out to finish the competition in a well earned 3rd position turning the tables on the strong Canterbury outfit. A little more luck in the early running and we could well have made the final. Congratulations to Josh Hardy who starred with the bat for us, and to Oliver Hadden and Aiden Mitchel who both took their first fivefas during the season. A lot of old fashioned G&D was shown against some extremely talented and hostile fast bowling attacks during the season and although some sported some badges of honour and one requiring an Ambulance, none of these boys took a backward step. I was very proud and honoured to have coached this team. Well played boys.

U13 DCA

Written by Heath Anderson, Coach U13 DCA In our pool DCA games we beat Fairfield-Liverpool, Sutherland, Blacktown, Hawkesbury and against Canterbury

Wests we were 7 for 13 and fought hard to reach 99 and then lost by 1 wicket.

In the qualifying final we defeated Canterbury at Smith Park thanks to Mitch Lole’s maiden century, then beat South

Eastern away in a semi when we had to overcome many factors. This victory was the best victory I have ever

witnessed in junior representative cricket.

So we advanced to the grand final and we would play Central Coast who had finished unbeaten and on top.

Central Coast had only lost 1 game in 4 seasons and won the final against us restricting us to 105 and then Central

Coast chasing the total down with only 4 overs left. Again the boys fought hard, never gave in and played good

cricket.

To reach the DCA final is a great achievement, the boys played outstanding aggressive cricket. Our bowling attack

was second to none; to be told by nearly every opposition coach and manager that our bowling attack was the best

they had seen was very deserving for the boys. Our batting was solid and the highlight was a great ton to Mitch Lole

against Canterbury Wests in the qualifying final.

Our team then took part in the Ballina U/13 Carnival held in January, losing only our final game on the Friday after

being sent in on a wet pitch. Again our bowlers lead the way with strong performances. Also our batting was solid

with different players scoring runs during the carnival lead by Mitch and Jasper.

Congratulations to Toby Gray being selected in the Kookaburra cup side, also congratulations to Nathan, Jasper, Kain

and Mitch for their outstanding performances at the State Challenge in Dubbo. Nathan and Kain were both selected

in the NSW U/13 merit team, a great achievement for these boys. Also congratulations to Jack, Edan and Tamas for

playing in the U/14 Graeme Malcolm Carnival.

The boys are to be commended for their hard work and commitment put in at training this season, we trained hard

and the results showed and the boy’s individual skills improved.

Thanks to Paul Gray for all the time he gives to this team , his commitment to the team is immense and Mark McGill

for his help and assistance and thanks to the parents and families of the boys who helped and provided so much

positive support.

The U/13 DCA team had a great rep season, had a lot of fun and enjoyed their cricket. I am so proud of the character,

respect and sportsmanship shown during the season by the boys.

Written by Russel Fowler and Yusuf Badat, U14 DCA Coach and Manager

Overall Results: 6 matches, 3 wins and 3 losses.

This was our best season so far and the first time that we have made the playoff stage. We added two new players

this season in Mathew Brodie & Glenn Winsor.

We got off to a very good start with 3 consecutive wins, something we had never achieved previously.

Some strong batting from Ahmed Badat & Joshua Claridge in these matches set up the great start & they were

supported by Sam Winpenny, Luke Muddle & Callan Fowler in the bowling. Glenn Winsor also scored a good 40 not

out against Penrith in round 3 & finished off what was looking like a close game.

Round 4 was a disappointing loss to the Central Coast, where we did not put enough runs, Josh was our lone top

scorer on the board & failed to take some critical chances. Round 5 we just came up short in our run chase with

again strong batting from Ahmed & Josh, supported by a late innings by Luke Muddle, but on a day when our

bowlers struggled for a tight line. This was Ahmed’s 3rd score of 50 or more for the season.

In our first ever quarter final, we batted first with Josh Claridge our only batsman to make a total against some very

tight bowling, we just did not put enough runs on the board. This was proven critical when after a strong bowling

performance by Luke & Sam to get us off to a good start, we started to build some pressure on Georges River St

George & with a late spell of tight off spin from Callan Fowler we nearly created an upset, but were just 30 runs short

in our total.

So overall a very encouraging season & one to build on for next season. We look forward to playing on turf next year

and going further in the playoff rounds.

Thanks for a great season.

U15 IDCA

Written by Darren Castle and Neil Saville, U15 IDCA Coach and Manager

It was another very strong year by this playing group. With three of last year’s squad rewarded for strong individual

performances with the opportunity to move into the DCA squad, and a couple of others who withdrew from

representative cricket, we had five new players come into the squad at the start of the season. The new boys

certainly fitted in well, and it was great to see the strong team spirit that had been built last year was carried

through into the new squad.

We had a tough draw in the rounds of the President’s Cup but the team performed solidly, winning 4 of the 5 games.

Our only loss was against Manly, who finished undefeated at the top of the table. Although we were equal with

North Shore on points, and had defeated them in the rounds, they finished with a better percentage and pushed us

into third place. We earned a home final against Canterbury Wests, with a highlight of the season being the

opportunity to play the final at No.1 Sportsground. The team again played solidly and were rewarded with a

relatively easy win.

Other season highlights included;

consistently strong bowling/fielding performances – bowled out the opposition for less than 115 in five of

the six games

defeated the strong North Shore team for a second year in a row – this was a cracker of a finish as we were

defending only 112. A last wicket stand of 23 was broken with North Shore only 3 runs short of the target

and a couple of overs left. The boys appeared calm but the crowd was tense!

Unfortunately, our only carnival for the year was cancelled due to wet weather. All of the team were looking forward

to the carnival and we were confident of a strong performance, but that’s cricket.

We would like to thank the boys for their good humour and mateship. We believe that the continued strong

performance of this squad is due to the enjoyment they take from the game and the way they play as a team, not

just as individuals. We are very proud of our association with them and thank them for their attitude.

We would also like to give a big thank you to all the parents. There were plenty of volunteers to help out with

scoring and with other tasks as needed. The lunches we provided at our home games were also a great collaborative

effort – a great team spirit in the support group also.

U15 DCA

Written by Michael O’Sullivan, U15 DCA Coach The 2014/15 DCA Competition could only be described as frustrating for the Newcastle U15 team. The boys went into the season with the confidence of making the finals the year before and looking to go all the way. An easy win in the first game against Blacktown (Newcastle 5-265 v Blacktown 135) only reinforced their confidence. The second game against arch rivals the Central Coast without our skipper and number three proved a greater challenge but controlled batting and tight bowling on a very slow outfield allowed us to grind out a good win 9-188 to 9-169. Game 3 was a grudge match against Camden who had knocked us out of the finals the previous year. An exceptional batting display from Jason “ Sangalanga” Sangha (138) and Will “Cracker” Davis (100no) took us to 3-278 before the opening bowlers destroyed their top order with Zac “Ghost” Mace finishing with 4-10. Game 4 should have been easy against Penrith who we had beaten comfortably a number of times in previous years and only managed 134 after a great spell of spin bowling from James “Custard” Beatty (6-28). After losing some early wickets a brilliant stand-alone innings of 80 no by Luke “T-Rex” Hitchcock took us home at 7-136. We lined up for game 5 against the bottom ranked Fairfield Liverpool and on top of our pool with a 2+ quotient looking certain to go into the finals ranked 1 or 2 and guaranteeing ourselves home finals. Game 5 started in hot conditions at Fairfield and after winning the toss the boys were 1-30 after ten overs with Jason “Sangalanga” Sangha and Luke “T-Rex” Hitchcock praying for a wicket so they could get in and feast on the bowling. The umpires then made what could only be described as a brain snap decision and called the game off due to excessive heat at 29 degrees. The game was the only one called off in all age groups in NSW that day and proved to be a major blow to the teams aspirations to make the final. After finishing 3rd we played Camden at No1 Sports ground in the quarter finals. A good all-round bowling display dismissed Camden for 143 before we cruised to victory at 2-143. The win booked us a semifinal with Bankstown at Bankstown, a game we would have played at home if our game 5 was not called off. In a rain affected game Bankstown scored 7- 173 off 43 overs after we had them on the rack at 5-65. In reply Newcastle were 2-111 at the 30 over drinks break when the storms and lightning started. One over after drinks the game was called off and Bankstown went through to the final being the higher placed team after the rounds and Newcastle looking certain to win. As disappointing a finish to a season as I can remember. While the weather played a big part in the end result the performance of the side was outstanding all season and the boys should be proud of themselves. Special thanks to Steve “Ronnie Palmer” Mace for training and warming up the boys as well as all the other parents for their support throughout the season.

U13 GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM

Written by Tom Anderson, Coach U13 Girls Representative Team

It has been my honour and privilege to coach this group of cricketers. Formed the previous season’ this team came

together with some clear goals in mind.

1. To enjoy each other’s company and to celebrate each other’s successes and to comfort those that were

having a tough time.

2. To win at least one game this Rep season.

Our team was selected to pay in the Mollie Dive Cup at the end of January against the best Under 13 Girls teams

from across NSW including Sydney.

I received a phone call at the start of November from Sharyn Beck inviting the girl’s team to play in the Ron Arendts

Under 11 Carnival. It was a great honour to be invited let alone play in one of the state’s best run carnival.

We performed with pride, passion and sportsmanship. The girls did themselves and their parents proud, as well as

Newcastle. We may not have won a game that week but we sure did open some eyes.

A special thanks to Sharyn Beck for the way she champions girl’s cricket in Newcastle.

Thanks also to Jordann Johnson for being our guest Assistant Coach for the week. Jordy is a fantastic cricketer

(played for NSW under 15s this year and won the Nationals), she is a great role model and inspiration for my girls

and I know they loved having her there.

Breakers Junior Cricket League Carnival playing for the U13 Mollie Dive Cup

Hopes were high for the Mollie Dive Cup after the Under 11 carnival in Newcastle but playing against the best

Under13 girls in NSW, we knew we had a challenge.

This is how the week unfolded:

Round 1 – WIN (yes, our first win as a Rep team ever)

Round 2 – WIN

Round 3 – LOSS (back to earth)

Round 4 – WIN (second last ball victory)

Round 5 – WIN (a must win game to have a chance to make the semifinals, YES we are through)

SEMIFINAL – WIN (It has been 4 long hot days and the girls have played fantastic cricket. I’m not afraid to tell

everyone I shed some tear watching this game)

FINAL – LOSS (bugger)

All the coaches and Managers were extremely proud of the girls. They brought into every aspect of the carnival and

played some of the best cricket but most of all enjoyed each other’s company.

I’m also proud of the way the parent group allowed the coaches to coach and respected the decisions we made

which reflected in the girl’s performances.

Finally to my management team of coaches, manager and scorer.

1. Craig McGrath (manager) was my right hand man throughout the carnivals. His organizational skills and

support to both me and the girls was outstanding.

2. Tony Taylor and Jordann Johnson (Assistant coaches) put their hearts and souls into the team and I know the

girls enjoyed their company.

3. And to Maryanne (scorer), you keep your cool (mostly) in some high pressure situations and never took a

backward step and I know the girls loved your support.

Thanks Tommy Anderson

U16 GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM

Written by Tom Anderson, Coach U16 Newcoasters

This team was the most talented group of cricketers I have ever been associated with.

Playing against the best young female cricketer (under16) in the state, the Newcoasters dominated in all areas

especially on the score board. We remained undefeated after 5 days and 7 games of cricket.

Congratulations to the girls for all their efforts during the week especially Trudi Peterson (champion batter of the

carnival) and Synetta Manns (champion bowler of the carnival). It was also great to see how humble the girls were

during the week, showing you can be really good players and still show sportsmanship towards their opponents. This

was especially evident by the way our co – captains, Jordann and Dion run the side and engaged with the opposition.

I don’t like to single out individual players as all the girls had a fantastic carnival but I gave my coaches award to the

hardest working member of the team. Amy Cunningham was our keeper for the 5 days and she showed great

composure, skills and resilience.

Finally, special thanks to Sherida Johnson (head selector) for pulling together a fantastic team. Thanks also to Cindy

Chandler for managing the team (best manager at the carnival) and Neal Cunningham for stepping into the Assistant

Coach role at last minute. And to my son Tom Anderson Jnr, thanks for scoring and for not taking a backwards step

when the pressure was applied.
