WEEK OF FEBRUARY 7 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABI-LIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 7 DE FE-BREROWhat we know and understand as Church more or less begins with today’s Gospel reading from St. Luke. Jesus calls His first disciples — His first Apostles. Luke tells us of the miracle that occurred for St. Peter and the others in their fishing boat. At the Lord’s command, they cast their nets after a time of catching nothing, and “they caught a great number of fish.”

Note Peter’s reaction, however. He falls to his knees and implores Jesus, “De-part from me Lord, for I am sinful man.” St. Peter is astonished and amazed, and he is, quite frankly, afraid of what he has just experienced. We may sometimes react to the Lord’s calling in a similar way. It is a bit overwhelming and frightening to come to the realization that we, too, are called, and that the Lord has expectations of us.

Yet, this is how what we know as the Church began. It commenced with Jesus calling simple fishermen according to our Gospel. These, of course, then de-veloped into twelve, then hundreds, then thousands, and now millions upon millions of those called to be disciples. We are among that throng. When Luke speaks of “following,” he is talking about discipleship. We are called to be stewards and disciples, but are we willing to “leave everything and follow Him?” For a longer reflection, please visit http://www.thecatholicsteward.com.

THE 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / 5° DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 3

This story of Peter meeting Jesus the first time always amazes me. We do not know much about Peter before this day. We know he had a wife and mother-in-law. Not sure about children. He might have been a practicing Jew, but probably did the minimum. Sat in back of the synagogue, listened, then went back the daily grind. Most likely kept the mosaic law the best he could, but wasn’t that worried about every letter of the Law. He knew in his mind, The One would come again, but

probably not today or anytime soon. In a way he hedged his bets. He’d have a good argument that he had done enough to be counted among the ones to be saved.

Then this guy hops in his boat. All these people were with him and they wanted to hear what he had to say. Peter listened, but that wasn’t enough. He resisted Jesus, but Jesus kept at him. When he first started to pull up on the net, he probably thought he snagged a rock or something. It was so heavy, but it kept rising, till with a great effort he hauled it over the side nearly sinking the boats. At this moment Peter knew the game was over, the years of just going through the motions caught up to him. This was judgement day, so kneeling in the middle of hundreds of fish, he tells Jesus, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” But Jesus looking down with merci-ful eyes, says, “Do not be afraid.” This was the beginning of Peter’s ministry.

Jesus gets into all our boats and calls us to discipleship. How do you respond?

February 7, 2016 – 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time/7 de febrero, 2016 - 5° Domingo del Tiempo OrdinarioIn today’s readings, we witness divine abundance and our very human response to a vision of God’s glory. Sensing their inadequacy in the eyes of God, Isaiah and Peter each respond with a sense of despair. They know they are not worthy to stand in the light of God’s glory. Thankfully, this does not last. God, the source of all holiness…is the source of our holiness. This is the why Paul can proclaim that even though we are not fit, we are what we are by God’s grace. We too, in some small ways, are called to give witness – we too are sent. Will we go?

Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Is 6:1-8; 1 Co 15:1-11; Lk 5:1-11] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/readings/020716.cfm

¿Vamos a ir? Tómense un momento para revisar las lecturas de este domingo [Is 6, 1-8; 1 Co 15: 1-11; Lc 5: 1-11] o ver en línea en http://usccb.org/bible/readings/020716.cfm
