THE CATECHISTS CORNER

Confession: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.” Why do Catholics confess their sins to the priest? Because, that’s the way Jesus ordained it! Where’s that in the Bible? Let’s open the Book and take a look! Let’s start in Mark 6:7...Jesus sent out the twelve two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. Here Jesus is giving out His authority. In Matthew 9:2-8, we see that Jesus has authority on earth to forgive sins. Then in John 20:21-23, Jesus breathes on the Apostles, conferring upon them the Holy Spirit, and sends them out as the Father has sent Him...with authority on earth to forgive sins. He states it clearly in verse 23 “Whose sins you for-give are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Now, how would they know what sins to forgive or retain? Only if they were told! Je-sus didn’t give them the power to read minds! In 2 Corinthians 5:17-20, St. Paul explains how the Apostles (the first priests) are ambassadors of Christ’s work of reconciliation. This is why we re-fer to confession as the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. The Apostles and their successors have been the ministers of God’s grace and forgiveness for 2000 years. Confession is one of the most humbling of expe-riences that a person can go through. But that’s the way Jesus ordained it!

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

When he discovered that Mary was with child, Jo-seph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became in-stead the protector of the child Jesus and His mother, Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the leading of the Holy Spirit!

Good News: The Diocesan Centennial Campaign was very successful, with Fatima receiving in pledg-es (over a five year period) over 2 million dollars. Thirty percent of our goal of $1,170,000.00 will be returned to Fatima; thereafter fifty percent of what is collected will eventually be returned to us. Bad News: Since the Campaign, our weekly collec-tions are substantially lower. This is understandable and to be expected. This is a friendly reminder to do what you can to keep our weekly operation budget running smoothly. Online giving is a wonderful way to make sure you are up to date. Thanks, Fr. Russo.

FINDING EASTER IN CHRISTMAS

Many familiar images of Christmas are actually symbols to connect Christmas to the Easter season. This is because Christmas and Easter are meant to be connected in our religious imagination. When we learn to see Christmas images through the eyes of Easter, we see that the Nativity is not simply about Christ’s birth and childhood. It is really about his life’s mission to pro-claim the reign of God, a mission that will lead to his passion, death, resurrection, and ascension. The familiar elements of Christmas have a deeper meaning for all baptized Christians, who are called to see beyond the crèche to the cross. Here are some examples of this Christmas-Easter connec-tion: Holly berries and leaves: The red ber r ies of the holly tree remind us of the blood of Christ’s passion, and the prickly edg-es of its leaves recall the crown of thorns. Christmas wreaths: The cr own of thorns has become the victorious crown of eternal life represented by the evergreen leaves.

Christmas tree: The wood of the Chr istmas tree on which we hang ornaments and gifts becomes the wood of the cross on which hung Jesus, the Savior of the world, the greatest gift we could receive.

Christmas lights: In the dark times of the year , we light candles and put up lights. This reminds us of the paschal candle we will light at Easter, which is Christ our Light. Angels: Chr istmas angels tell the shepherds, “Do not be afraid” as they announce the birth of Christ. At Easter the angel at the empty tomb tells the women, “Do not be afraid,” an-nouncing that Christ is risen. Manger: A manger is a feeding trough for farm animals. Through the sacrifice of Jesus, his very Body and Blood be-come our Eucharist, the food and drink of eternity.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE Divorce Recovery Program: Our Lady of Fatima offers a 6-week divorce recovery program for those who have suffered from divorce/separation. The Divorce Recovery Program is based on The Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide and is a six-week series that will meet on Tuesdays from 6:15 to 8 p.m., in the Knight Hall Auditorium starting on January 17, 2017. The cost for the program is $50 per person, which covers all six meeting dates and your materials. You may find the enrollment form on the Fatima Church website (www.fatimalafayette.org. Print the enrollment form from the website and turn into the Parish Office or sign up directly through the website. Your enrollment fee must be turned into the Parish Office by January 13th, 2017. For more information, please email [email protected] or call 337.412.0349. Lent is a perfect time to reflect and recover from your sufferings caused by a divorce/separation. Retrovaille Weekend: A program for troubled mar r iages. The weekend provides a safe setting that encourages couples to learn com-munication in marriage in a respectful manner. Visit the website (www.helpourmarriage.com) for more information and to register. World Wide Marriage Encounter Weekend: Escape from the busyness of your hectic lifestyle and endless obligations and spend some very special time together. Attend a Worldwide Marriage En-counter weekend and give each other the gift of yourself.
