From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners: Together with Fr. Jean, our Deacons and staff, I extend to every member of our parish family heartfelt best wishes for a joyous Easter! I am grateful to all who have contributed their time and talent to making the liturgies of Holy Week worthy of their sacred character! Let us celebrate the Easter Season of fifty days with great joy! Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus, provides a beautiful reflection on this Solemnity of Solemnities:

The astonishing event of the resurrection of Jesus is essentially an event of love: the Father’s love in handing over his Son for the salvation of the world; the Son’s love in abandoning himself to the Father’s will for us all; the Spirit’s love in raising Jesus from the dead…And there is more: the Father’s love which "newly embraces" the Son, enfolding him in glory; the Son’s love returning to the Father in the power of the Spirit, robed in our transfigured humanity. From today’s solemnity, in which we relive the absolute, once-and-for-all experience of Jesus’s resurrection, we receive an appeal to be converted to Love; we receive an invitation to live by rejecting hatred and selfishness, and to follow with docility in the footsteps of the…Redeemer who is "gentle and lowly in heart…” Let no heart be closed to the omnipotence of this redeeming love! Jesus Christ died and rose for all; he is…true hope for every human being. Today, …the risen Jesus now sends us…as witnesses of his hope, and he reassures us: I am with you always…until the end of the world. In his glorious wounds we recognize the indestructible signs of the infinite mercy of the God…who heals the wounds of broken hearts, who defends the weak and proclaims the freedom of slaves, who consoles all the afflicted…If with humble trust we draw near to him, we encounter in his gaze the response to the deepest longings of our heart: to know God and to establish with him…a communion of love, which can fill our lives…humanity needs Christ: in him, our hope, "we have been saved."

Happy Easter to all! Msgr. Gervasio

Children's Liturgy of the Word The last Children's Liturgy for this school year will be on May 7. Many thanks to all the wonderful children who came to pray and hear God's Word this year, and to our Children's Liturgy team: Joan Bellis, Rebecca Culpepper, Anne Kantor, Lorraine Kostinas, and Marianne Peluso.

Liturgical Lines…The Easter Season The Church’s celebration of Easter is a season of fifty days, beginning with the Sunday of the Resurrection through Pentecost, that are to be celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, as one great Sunday. These are days above all others in which the Alleluia is sung. The Liturgical norms guiding this season are as follows: 3

The first days eight days of season make up the “octave” Easter and are celebrated as “solemnities.” During these days, as well as at Pentecost, a double “alleluia” is added to the dismissal of the Mass.

The sequence Victimae Paschali (the Paschal Victim) is sung at the Mass of Easter Sunday.

During the season special prayers should be included at Mass for the newly baptized.

The paschal candle, a symbol of the Risen Christ among His people, remains in the sanctuary near the altar or the ambo. It should be lighted at all liturgical services during the season.

A vessel containing water blessed at the Solemn Easter Vigil could be put in a suitable place in church, available for the faithful.

The Celebration of Mass with the

Anointing of the Sick

7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 25 Our Lady of Sorrows Church

By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)

Who may receive this sacrament?

Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.

The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not seriously ill.

Sick children may be strengthened through this anointing.

Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to this sacred encounter that they might know that Christ, who often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness.

Parish Organizations, Please Note Please notify the parish office when your organization or ministry changes leadership. It is important for us to know the correct person to contact regarding 2017-2018 facility scheduling. Please call or email Denise (587-4372; [email protected]) with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the head of your group and that person’s alternate. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Support the Annual Catholic Appeal!

In the Diocese of Trenton, those in consecrated life represent membership in a variety of male and female religious institutes. These men and women have dedicated their lives to proclaim the Word of the God and serve His people. In 2017, we have 59 Brothers, 46 priests and 248 women religious ministering in the diocese. While not easily recognizable, nevertheless, they witness the face of God as they celebrate our liturgies and carry out the spiritual and corporal works of mercy in fields of education, health care and social services throughout the diocese. Your gift promotes those called to serve. If you haven’t already made your donation, please do so as soon as possible. (Please make checks payable to the Annual Catholic Appeal, not to OLS-SA.) Your gift may be mailed directly to the Annual Catholic Appeal Office (Diocese of Trenton, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrence Twp., NJ 08648-4209); sent to the OLS-SA Parish Office (3816 E. State St. Ext. in Hamilton); or dropped in our regular collection in an envelope marked “Annual Catholic Appeal.” We'll gladly forward your gift to the diocesan office.

News from Our Parish School The little ones guide us each day! The voices and well wishes of our youngest Our Lady of Sorrows students gathered us in prayer this week. Several times each month the OLS school family comes together in prayer. We gather in the church of Our Lady of Sorrows for Mass each month, and then additionally we gather in the gym for a Prayer Service that marks a special time of the year. Each of these events is planned by our own students for their classmates throughout the school. This month was no different. Under the guidance of our Kindergarten teacher, Gina Sheppard, and classroom assistant, Ann Diken, our Kindergarten students met in the school to recall the miracle of Easter. Yes, our youngest led us in song and prayer as our school family came together before leaving for Easter break. (Of course, we weren't without our traditional Easter Egg Hunt event!) Of course, we invited every member of the students' families to join us at these loving events. These gatherings mark us as a special school family. We celebrate and pray together as a group. The youngest play just as vital role as do our most able middle school students. The Student Council, under the direction of Mrs. Maureen Tuohy, planned the excitement of the Easter Egg hunt. The children and faculty of OLS are a loving and supportive family, and we work together to support each other in fun as well as spiritual celebrations. Consider visiting us to see how OLS can make a difference for your family! Every day is an Open House, and we always welcome smiling faces! Our middle school Student Ambassadors will lead you in an informative tour of our campus and academic life. Financial assistance is still available to support your family. Find out more about the OLS Advantage! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Our Kindergarteners take time out for a group photo. The prayer service they’re planning reflects on the days leading to Easter Sunday and includes a slide show of pictures that each student made to Josh Groban’s You Raise Me Up.

Religious Education Registration It’s time to register your children for Religious Education classes for the 2017-18 school year. We look forward to seeing all of you. Please check the letter that we mailed with the registration forms for information on a special early registration offer. If you did not receive it, please call us (587-4372). All registration forms are available at www.ols-sa.org/religiouseducation for your convenience. You may print the registration form and either mail it or drop it off at the parish office. Eucharistic Adoration Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle.

Thursdays Are Days of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord’s call…He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord’s Presence?

Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

Home Health Nursing Program:

Our Lenten Work of Mercy While there are people in need all over the world, we sometimes forget those in our own community who need help. Recognizing this, Monsignor Gervasio and the parish’s Social Justice Committee have brought Our Lenten Work of Mercy closer to home this year. Mount Carmel Guild, a Catholic Social Service agency of the Diocese of Trenton, serves Mercer County residents through its Emergency Assistance and Home Health Nursing programs. Almost a century old, Mount Carmel Guild has been “seeing Christ in others” since its founding in 1920 by Msgr Thomas J Walsh.

Since Our Lady of Sorrows – St. Anthony Parish donates food year-round to the Guild’s Emergency Assistance program, our Lenten Work of Mercy will focus on Home Health Nursing.

There’s probably nothing more dignified than the ability to remain in your home as you age—to age gracefully; to keep your independence, your history, your world. But as medical needs increase this isn’t always possible.

Home Health Nursing program’s primary goal is to provide long-term home-based nursing care to the most medically needy and economically disadvantaged senior citizens of Mercer County—those whose Medicare insurance has been exhausted and who have no alternative care. Patients are usually homebound with geriatric diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, lung and heart

disease, stroke, cancer, neuromuscular disorders, and arthritis. Most are ambulatory with canes or walkers; some use wheelchairs. The help provided by program staff allows them to stay in the comfortable surroundings of their own homes, preventing premature placement in institutions. Among other assistance and services rendered, the nurses:

Pre-fill insulin syringes Pre-pour medications Monitor vital signs and blood sugars Conduct pacemaker checks Give injections Wound care Coumadin monitoring

Staff nurses provide more to their patients than just skilled medical care. They provide comfort and companionship to those who are lonely and make referrals to other services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation to and from medical appointments, and full time home health assistance, if needed. They also provide emergency food packages from the Guild’s Emergency Assistance program for anyone who is short of food and on a fixed income.

The nursing staff makes hundreds of home visits each year, providing more than 2,000 hours of assistance. Most importantly, the Guild’s Home Health Nursing Staff serves older patients with the kindness and compassion that everyone deserves.

Give up anything you want for Lent—candy, smoking, movies, dining out—then each week, calculate how much money you saved and bring it to church to put in one of the Lenten Work of Mercy cans at the exits. And pray for the program staff and those they serve.
