From the Pastor’s Desk

We celebrate on Pentecost Sunday the bestowal of the promised Holy Spirit, let us pray for a renewal of the Spirit’s presence in the life of every believer. May they experience wisdom, knowledge, understanding, right judgment, courage, piety, fear of the Lord (wonder and awe in the presence of the Lord). Let us pray …

O God, who by the mystery of today’s great feast sanctify your whole Church in every people and nation, pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit across the face of the earth and, with the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel

was first proclaimed, fill now once more the hearts of believers. Through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect, Pentecost Sunday, Roman Missal, 3rd Edition

Sunday, May 23, 2021SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST

Sing a new church into beingPentecost celebrates crowded places, multiple languages, anddiverse people uniting in one Spirit. It’s a hard feast to celebrateduring a pandemic in an era clouded by social conflict. All themore reason to challenge ourselves by celebrating not only whatmakes us the same, but also what makes us different. Godshowers on the world “gifts that differ,” as Benedictine hymnistDelores Dufner declares. So “Bring the hopes of every nation;/bring the art of every race. /Weave a song of peace and justice;/let it sound through time and space.” And let the church say:Amen!

TODAY'S READINGS: Day: Acts 2:1-11; Galatians 5:16-25 or 1Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13; Sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus; John20:19-23 (63). “There are different workings but the same God whoproduces all of them in everyone.”

Monday, May 24, 2021MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH

The mother of all feastsIn 2018, Pope Francis created the new Marian memorial that theuniversal church celebrates today, the Monday after Pentecost. The title “Mother of the Church” was bestowed on Mary in 1964 byPope Saint Paul VI at the closing of the Second Vatican Council. Her role as mother of the church goes back to when Jesus, on thecross, gave her and the beloved disciple to one another and towhen she became the mother of Christ, whose body we are allmembers of. Not everyone has a mother figure to rely on—knowthat you can always rely on the mother of us all.

TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 3:9-15, 20 or Acts 1:12-14; John 19:25-34 (572A). “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple therewhom he loved, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’”

Tuesday, May 25, 2021MEMORIAL OF MARY MAGDALENE DE' PAZZI, VIRGIN

A Spirit for the dry seasonWhen Mary Magdalene de' Pazzi became a Carmelite nun in1583, she couldn’t foresee the great physical suffering from anunknown disease that would besiege her. Nor could she foreseehaving the same type of ecstatic religious visions—followed byyears of “spiritual dryness”—as did another Carmelite saint,Teresa of Ávila. Magdalene’s bout of spiritual dryness, so severethat she considered suicide, ended on Pentecost in 1590. WithPentecost 2021 so recently behind us, pray as she did: “Come,Holy Spirit . . . Come, as you descended on Mary, that the Wordmight become flesh and work in us through grace.”

TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 35:1-12; Mark 10:28-31 (348). “Give tothe Most High as he has given to you, generously.”

Wednesday, May 26, 2021MEMORIAL OF PHILIP NERI, PRIEST

Now is the time to do goodIn the middle of Rome in the 16th century lived a man whose joyfulnature made him something of a people magnet for both thepowerful and the poor. Saint Philip Neri was a deeply spiritual manwho exuded natural warmth, listened well, and in lovinggenerously, led others to know God. This spiritual director, priest, and confessor was known to ask, “Well, when shall we begin to dogood?” It is no surprise that Neri, known as the “Apostle of Rome,”

inspired followers to join him in caring for the sick and the poor.Where can you do some good today?

TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 36:1, 4-5a, 10-17; Mark 10:32-45 (349).“For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.”

Thursday, May 27, 2021MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP

Can’t win them allAugustine of Canterbury, memorialized today, is remembered as amajor figure in evangelizing England. The renowned CanterburyCathedral was built on the site of a church and monastery he builtaround the end of the sixth century. In spite of his stature now as“Apostle of the English,” he met with bitter disappointment, too. Hisefforts to bring the English bishops in line with Rome were roundlyrebuffed, a disappointment he took to his death. Can you let go ofyour failures, knowing that, like Augustine, they do not define yourlife?

TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 42:15-25, Mark 10:46-52 (350). “Hebegan to cry out and say, ‘Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.’”

Friday, May 28, 2021Give a fig!Figs are a popular fruit in the Bible, from Genesis with Eve andAdam wearing fig leaves clear through the Book of Revelation’sapocalyptic falling of winter figs. Why so many figs? The fig itself issweet and has lots of dietary fiber, calcium, and various mineralsand vitamins. It is a great source of energy and flavor. Perhapsbecause it is so plentiful, delicious, and nutritious, the fig is alsorich in symbolism for health and abundance. In the gospels, Jesusexpects us to be like figs—to be “nutritious” to others andabundant in our presence and giving. Let us go forth to nurture theworld!

TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 44:1, 9-13; Mark 11:11-26 (351). “As theywere leaving Bethany Jesus was hungry. Seeing from a distance afig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it.”

Saturday, May 29, 2021MEMORIAL OF PAUL VI, POPE

A Pentecostal popeThe ecumenical movement received a much-needed boost duringthe papacy of Saint Pope Paul VI (1963-78). After the SecondVatican Council in the mid-1960s, Pope Paul went out of his way topromote ecumenical dialogue and partnership. When asked by acardinal for permission to initiate a joint Catholic-Protestanttranslation of the Bible, Paul is said to have responded, “I amtotally in favor!” He issued formal approval later that year onPentecost Sunday, our recently celebrated feast commemoratingthe moment when the Holy Spirit allowed believers of allbackgrounds and languages to truly understand each other.Come, Holy Spirit!

TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 51:12cd-20; Mark 11:27-33 (352). “Bywhat authority are you doing these things?”

Pentecost Sunday

Page 6: Mother of Sorrows Parish

23 May 2021 – Pentecost Sunday Jesus, the risen Lord, enters the room in which the disciples had barricaded themselves out of fear and offers them two gifts: his peace and the breath of the Holy Spirit. This scene and these words are familiar to us, having pondered them only a few weeks ago on the Second Sunday of Easter. Today, on the feast of Pentecost, we focus on the sharing of the Holy Spirit. Today’s psalm lifts up another aspect of the Holy Spirit as an agent of renewal in the world. Commissioning the disciples to carry on his ministry, Jesus says, “As the father has sent me, so I send you.” How do these words reverberate with your own faith journey in your family life?

Universal Prayer:

For those who live in fear, may the peace of the Lord free them from all

anxieties and grant them the courage to use their talents and gifts for the glory of God. …

we pray to the Lord.

There Is Hope on the Horizon

With all we have experienced during the pandemic, we have all missed a lot: our friends, our family, and our parish communities. Yet the love of God and peace of Christ still burns brightly in our hearts. As we hope and pray the pandemic is in its final stages, many are returning to their parishes. The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland invites us to watch this a video that explains there is hope on the horizon as we continue to grow our faith in God: https://vimeo.com/539331363/8c213f9bce
