This being the first Sunday of the month, coffee and donuts will be served in the Marian Room after the Sunday morning Masses this weekend. Feel free to stop down after Mass for a quick cup of coffee and a donut on your way out of church – it is also a good way to meet other members of the parish.

Monday evening of this week, February 6, we will host our annual Parish Appreciation dinner. This occasion each year allows me, Father Romulus and Father Sam, to say “thank you” to all of the people of the parish who have volunteered to help the parish in any way in the past year. Some have volunteered in various liturgical ministries, others have volunteered with fund raising activities, others in school, or on the grounds. Any parish is only as strong as the people who invest their time and talent in the activities of the parish. We here at the Basilica are blessed to have so many parishioners (and others from outside the parish) who help us out in this way. We could not do many of the things we do without your help. Invitations to the Parish Appreciation reception have been sent out, but, if you volunteered but didn’t receive an invitation for some reason or another, please feel free to join us. Please note that this year, this reception will be held at Ilio DiPaolo’s restaurant, and it begins at 6:00 p.m.

Mark your calendar. Tuesday evening, February 14, we will celebrate our annual Couples’ Mass. Couples married just a short time, and couples married many years, are all invited. The Mass will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Basilica. The reception following Mass will be in the Our Lady of Victory Elementary School cafeteria. All couples are invited to attend. Come and bring a friend.

It is worth stopping to remember that Valentine’s Day was first and foremost a church feast. There are several legends about St. Valentine. Here’s the one I like the most. St. Valentine, a priest of the Church of Rome, lived in the third century and was noted for his written reminders to his people that God loved them. Those little “love notes” from Valentine are the forerunners of Valentine greetings and cards which have become so popular. It is the greeting card company and the candy companies which have taken over this feast of Valentine and turned it into a secular holiday. That should not be an obstacle to us from celebrating the feast. If you send Valentine’s Day cards or gifts to your loved ones this year, it is good to remember where the celebration began – by remembering what St. Valentine was teaching us so long ago - that God loves all of us, and we should be reflections of this love for one another.

May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. Sunday, February 12

at 10:00 a.m.

Have you ever attended a Children’s Liturgy? We have them once a month here at OLV. These are Masses that teach our children about Catholic worship and their role in it! The prayers, music and homily are directed to the younger members of the Church, but many “grown-ups” seem to like them as well. Why don’t you see for yourself at our next Children’s Liturgy on Sunday, February 12, at 10:00 a.m.

Practice for the ministers for this liturgy will take place on Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 till 10:30 a.m. and will meet in the Music Room. Singers will practice from 9:00 till 9:45 a.m. All others will practice from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. The Ministers list is:

Readers: Nathaniel Powers, Roman & David Jackson Collectors: Sophia Davis, SueAnn Pukalo, Egypt Trotman, Amber Daley Gift Bearers: Logan George Greeters: SueAnn Pukalo Singers: Ellie Spoonley, Vanessa Lewczyk

All readers and singers must practice for the Mass. All other children must practice unless previously excused by Tina. Please call Tina Hatem (826-5075) if your child will be unable to attend Mass or practice or if you have any questions about our Masses. Please call Tina if your child would like to sing, bring up the gifts or greet at this liturgy.
