Parashah Summary This week’s Sidrah tells of Jacob and his special love for his son Joseph over his

other children to whom he gives a “coat of many colors.” Joseph lets it get to his head, making himself unpopular, until his brothers sell him as a slave to a caravan heading to Egypt. They report to their father that Josef has died, plummeting him into mourning and themselves into years of lies.

In the meanwhile, Joseph goes through slavery and then imprisonment in Egypt through on fault of his own. As a prisoner, he successfully interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners who had been officials in Pharaoh’s court. Dream interpretation was an accepted part of Egyptian life, and it is Joseph’s good fortune that he correctly predicted the occurrences in the lives of Pharaoh’s servants from their dreams.

In Today’s Haftarah The Prophet Amos brings his message to the Israelites of the Northern

Kingdom in the middle of the eighth century B.C.E. about the same time as Hosea. It is a troubled time. The people of the Northern Kingdom have forgotten that G-d’s teachings require righteousness of Israel.

Amos points out to the people that they are G-d’s chosen and therefore, in their many wrongdoings they are even guiltier than other peoples, who don’t know any better. The law courts are unfair to innocent people. The rich have no pity for the poor, and for even the smallest debts they sell the unfortunate poor into slavery. Men are inhuman to each other. For all of these wrongdoings and many more, the Israelites of the Northern Kingdom will suffer punishment. Israel, long ago, had been redeemed from Egypt by G-d to be a righteous people among the nations. Amos tells the Israelites of his day that they have forgotten the responsibilities which their ancestors took upon themselves during the Exodus from Egypt.

They have been warned, but pay no attention to the prophets. They will soon have to pay the penalty for their forgetfulness and indifference.
