Taking Careof Your Hands Transmission of pathogens on the hands of healthcare workers is the most common cause of cross infection, occurring directly from patient contact or indirectly via contact with the environment. Hand hygiene is therefore considered to be one of the most important procedures in the prevention of cross contamination and cross infection. HOW TO HAND WASH

1. Wet hands and apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces.

7. Rub tips of fingers in opposite palm in a circular motion.

2. Rub hands palm to palm. 8. Rub each wrist in turn with opposite hand.

3. Rub back of each hand with the palm of other hand with fingers interlaced.

9. Rinse hands thoroughly with water.

4. Rub palm to palm with fingers interlaced. 10. Use elbow to turn off tap.

5. Rub with backs of fingersto opposing palms with fingers interlaced.

11. Dry thoroughly with a single-use towel.

6. Rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand using rotational movement

12. Your hands are now safe.
