PREFACE

MAYUR SACHDEVA

Over the past four years of my studies, my methods of architectural

conception have been one of imagination, creation, fabrication, whether it be

physical objects, hand or computer renderings, or imagings.

The understanding of form, contrast, and articulation, as well as a continually

evolving design process, have guided my work and challenged my thinking

through my explorations into the architectural experience.

It has taken me long that the constantly maturing deposition of

design is not an impedance to myself but an opportunity to

bring out new and unique techniques to the table i experienced

through different life experiences.

This collection represents my contribution to towards this

profession.

origin •An Iranian architect, Nader Khalini

popularized the notion of building

permanent structures with bags

filled with earthen materials.

methodology •Prepare site, setting aside topsoil.

•Build a rubble trench foundation, with material

removed from foundation area used to fill earth bags.

•Prepare fill material, using moistened subsoil.

•Fill bags & lay them into place before tamping.

•Use mud plaster on the wall surface.

advantages •Inexpensive

•Easy to learn and build with

•Ecological, using mostly earth

•Versatile in building styles possible

•Durable: earthquake, flood and bullet resistant

•Can be either insulation or thermal mass

•Non-toxic

•Uses a simple foundation

origin •In the 1970s, Michael Reynolds modified the typical

rammed earth structure construction process to use bricks of

tires filled with rammed earth instead of solid walls of

rammed earth.

methodology •Place a used tire over a double layer of cardboard on the

ground, fill it with dirt and compress the dirt with a hammer.

•This process is repeated until the tire is completely filled

with compacted soil. The tires must be filled to at least 95

percent compaction.

•Other tires are then placed and filled next to the first tire.

•Once one row of tires is complete, another row is placed on

top of the first row, but staggered in alternate lay from the

first row, like bricks.

advantages •Environmentally friendly way to reuse waste items

•Habitable, heated structure

•Solid thermal mass

•Load-bearing

•Used to create some wonderful free form effects
