vv The reason we set our pink-pedicured toes in the fashion world is simple: we wanted to try on all the

clothes in the world. Knowing that a typical freshman’s pocket money will only get her a couple of dresses from Forever 21 on those days she is lucky, we decided to become fashion editors just so that we could

fulfill our dreams for free. But where do we start? From the bottom, steaming racks of clothes and clean-ing up after snobby models? (No offense to our dear models, by the way; you guys are far, far from being

snobs.) Being the lazy but ambitious people that we are, we decided to place ourselves at the top of the food chain by launching a magazine.

Editor-in-Chief. Sounds fancy and quite “Devil Wears Prada”-esque, eh? Well, you cant be more wrong. Being editors-in-chief means stalking writers, begging shop owners for sponsorships, holding up desk lamps and tin foil-covered “light boards” during photo shoots. It is pure labor, endless doses of stress,

squeezing what little brain cells we have left for fresh ideas. Not that the circumstances are any different for the rest of the staff members; they too slave for hours editing photos, recruiting models, and dealing

with our near-deadline psycho tantrums.

Why do we do this to ourselves, you may ask? Let’s put it this way. Feeling the glossy pages between your fingers is like touching that silky hemline of a one-of-a-kind vintage dress you find after raiding every

single boutique on Melrose. Seeing your own name imprinted on the staff section is like spotting those last pair of glitter-covered Louboutin pumps at a sample sale. How could we trade this feeling for any-

thing else in the world?

So here it is. The final, orgasmic on our part, product of our continuous whining, stressing, and trotting (in five-inch heels, that is). Yes, we can’t dare say it is perfect. Fortunately, we have you as our readers to tell

us what’s missing. With you, it’s only going to get better.

With love,Dana Jeong

Meet my pal Schrodinger, who is better known as Bearbear, but also responds to Tummy, Tummybear, Xiao Xiongxiong, or Paddington. He’s quite the ladies’ man, but at the end

of the night, he’s always sleeping next to me. Some people count sheep, some people chug Nyquil, but I just need a

good cuddle to get my shut-eye.

Sick people have IV, hungover

people have Advil, heart-broken people have

chocolates, and I have Red Bull. It is quite liter-

ally my life line - I don’t doubt that this yellow-y liq-uid is flowing in my veins instead

of blood. So if you ever see me zombie-ing around campus with blood-

shot eyes and dark circles stretched down to my chin, you can safely assume that TroGro has run out of

their Red Bull supply for the day.

i would (probably) die without this

STAFF VANITYMy eyeliner is what completes my signature

raccoon look everyday - half an inch on a good day, and two inches on those rare days with puffy

eyelids twice the size of normal ones.

A cardigan to me is like a sweatshirt to a typical college student. Just as every other girl in my dorm has at least five

sweatshirts with varying colors and letters, I have a closet full of cardigans in every possible color, length, and fabric you

could think of. And I still have room for more!Sick people have

IV, hungover people have Advil,

From nutella, brownies, truffles and mint chocolate chip ice cream,

chocolate is a delicious heaven. One bite and an instant smile! My

by Jackie Choi

Our beauty director shares her beauty secrets to look-ing naturally gorgeous.

BEAUTY Moisturizer:

Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, $34Just like treating yourself to ice-cold Powerade after working out, treat your skin to some thirst-quenching hydration cream! This gel-type moisturizer gets absorbed into your skin immediately without being sticky. Blend with foundation in 1:2 ratios to give your skin a moist-y touch. One more tip: right after a night of heavy drinking, indulge your face with this baby like a facial mask before going to bed, and your super-dry post-alcohol mornings will be over for good.

Primer:

Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer, $30Famous for its lightness and its ability to prevent foundation from clogging up your precious pores, this primer works magic on your face. Not only does it even out your natural skin tone before applying foundation, but it also helps you take off your makeup more easily without leaving any leftover residue. And it feels just like lotion! Apply evenly on your T-zone and your cheekbones where your pores are most visible.

Lip balm:

Smith’s Rosebud Salve, $6This cute little item created by the Smith family has successfully made its way back to the center of the beauty world by settling down in every well-known celebrity and makeup artists’ pouches. Basically a rose-smelling Vaseline, it can be used both as a lip balm and a mois-turizer on any dry areas. The super cheap price is a bonus, of course.

Eye shadow, night:

Lancome Erika Ombre Absolue Eye Shadow, $27Although Lancome stopped manu-facturing this product a while ago, it is still an all-time favorite for many beauty lovers everywhere. The pearl-y glitters that give you a perfect night-out vibe are evenly distributed throughout the khaki without clumping, and it doesn’t get smudgy whether you are sweating at a club or just dancing around in your room. .

Concealer:

TheBalm TimeBalm Concealer, $18I have really bad dark circles under my eyes, so I am an expert on practically every single kind of concealers out there. Ever since I found this one, I never go outside without it. It blends perfectly and evenly into your skin. Although it is famous for its ability to get rid of dark circles, it works great in any other parts you want to hide.

10

Page 13: Pose Magazine Demo Issue

Tint:

Benefit Posietint, $28A sister item to oh-so-famous Benetint, Posietint acts as a blush and a lip tint at the same time. Al-though closer to pink than red compared to Bene-tint, this item nonetheless brings lively color to your lips without making it look like you had greasy fries for lunch. Apply lightly when you are not feeling like overdosing on lipstick or lip gloss.

Eyeliner:

Bobbi Brown Long-wear Gel Eye-liner in Black Ink, $21Since I have been “blessed” with almond-shaped Asian eyes, I’m always searching for the next best liner to maximize my eye size. This gel-type liner may not seem like such a great tool, but it is simply the best – neither pencil nor liquid eyeliner can top this. It is easier to apply than liquid but lasts way longer than pencil. Make sure to buy a brush with it; the shorter, the better.

Highlighter:

Guerlain Meteorites Perles Illuminating powder, $56This is what brings into life my non-existent nose on a daily basis. Com-posed of little marble-like balls of many different colors like cream, blue, purple, pink, and yellow, this powder emphasizes the fact that not our skin is not composed of one color and thus requires multiple colors to bring out different shades. Rub a good amount on your T-zone, your cheekbones, and your chin for more defined features. Works just like a highlighter.

Perfume:

Lanvin Eclat d’Arpege (perfume), $72.50Voted as number one perfume guys want their girls to wear, this scent contains flowery notes like lilac, wisteria, and peach blossom. Because this perfume symbolizes all kinds of love in the world, the bottle displays an illustration of Jeanne Lanvin and her daughter on the front and features two intertwined wedding bands around its neck. Its playful and light aroma is what attracts women all around the world.

Eye shadow day:

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow in Bronze, $20Every girl would know that striking a perfect bal-ance between natural and pretty is the hardest thing to do in makeup. With this elegantly pearl-ized shadow, your eyes will sparkle just enough to reflect the beautiful sunlight without glitter falling all over your face. Apply evenly on your eyelids to lightly define your eyes. Also great for smoky look.

Mascara:

Japan Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl Mascara, $14This mascara is world-famous: after making its debut and being voted number one in Japan, it made its way over to America and into all the beauty insiders’ makeup bag. Known for its durability (it literally lasts forever so use with a really good eye makeup remover), this item dramatically ex-tends and curls your lashes for one of those pretty doll faces look. Thanks to its curved brush, it never, ever clumps on you. Available at any Japanese markets or purchase online. 11

11:30 am. ahhhhhhhhhhhhI’M NEVER DRINKING EVER AGAIN

until tonight. i mean you’ve gotta party on tuesday night. i mean come on

but in the mean time i’m gonna1. drink ma fluids...cus the reason i feel groggy and nauseous is that alcohol dehydrates my body. sports drinks with vitamins and electrolytes are my favorite, but water does the trick too. but i’d rather not have caffeine cus it’s a diuretic and it’s only gonna dehydrate me even more.

2. eat ma mineral rich foods...cus alcohol makes me lose my essential minerals. and food in my stomach will help me stop making out with my toilet every five minutes. fish and radish? yum. mixed with ice and honey? even better. ugh i’m hungry.

3. eat ma hot soup...cus sometimes i feel too sick to stomach any solid food. spicy soup works the best but what?? you can’t handle your spices? then tomato or chicken noodle works too. i guess.

4. take a hot shower (cus despite my charming looks and hot bod i have some weird stuff on my shirt and hair...)...cus alcohol dehydrates my statuesque body and brings down my blood pressure, and a hot shower helps blood circulate better and return my mineral balance to normal.

5. work ma muscles so that i’m done with this beast of a hangover AND looking good for the honeys tonight...cus even though i feel like just passing out on my bed, apparenlty

blind date by Dana JeongPhoto by Stephanie Choi

What happens when two complete strangers start to get to know each other?

FEATURE

Victor Park, 19Santa Monica College

Thoughts on his way to the blind date

VP: I had no idea who she was. Abso-lutely none. My friend Cindy randomly asked me if I wanted to go on a blind date, so I thought, why not? I get free dinner and maybe meet a cool chick.

First Impression

Just a typical Asian girl, really tall.

Blind date details

VP: We walked Third Street Promenade, checked it out, then we went to Buc-ca di Beppo. We had a good conversa-tion about family, school, job, and

her hobbies. Then we went to Pinkber-ry - (POSE: Jenny’s idea, I’m assum-ing?) well, getting dessert was my idea (laughs) – and went to the Santa Monica Pier. There, we rode the Ferris wheel, I won her a stuffed animal at one of those arcade thing, and took pictures at the photo booth. We walked down the beach and I dropped her off at school.

Last Impression

VP: She’s really outgoing, she’s very social and really cool. She presents herself to the fullest. While we were walking down the beach, she linked arms with me and that was really cute.

Second date

We’ll just keep talking, see how it goes, right now it’s not too serious.

{he says}

42

blind date by Dana JeongPhoto by Stephanie Choi

Jenny Lee, 19USC

First Impression

Umm. I don’t know. He was tall. And pretty cute, I guess. His motorcycle was so hot. And his laugh was so cute. He laughed like a little kid, he just sounded so happy.

Blind Date Details

Dinner, yogurt, pier, beach. It was cute that he didn’t smoke the whole time until I told him it was okay. I didn’t feel embarrassed around him, it was fun and comfortable. Oh, the motor-cycle… I felt like I was going to fall off. It’s scarier than it looks. You have to put your entire weight onto it,

it’s just really hard. I feel sore all over right now.

Favorite part

When we were walking around the beach and I put my arm through his.

Funny Moment

Cindy (Victor’s friend / POSE staff) texted Victor, “how’s it going?” and we decided to play with her by texting back that it was really bad and awk-ward.

Second date

Yes.

KIMSKI Makes is a store that I accidently came across when shop-ping around at American Apparel in Little Tokyo. I decided to go next door and came across this gem of a store. I kind of died when I first went in; I want-ed everything I laid my eyes on. You’ll be able to find everything from vintage to brand-new in clothing, accessories, shoes and all. They’re goal is to “fuse cross-cultural global urban style with refined everyday living”, and they certainly get that accomplished. This Los Angeles-based store

had its grad open-ing just last year and has already made its mark in the boutique

fashion scene. Af-ter leaving KIMSKI, you’re bound to have an essential item in your closet that you know no one else will have…unless they’re in on the secret! You’ll be especially happy to know every-thing ranges from a couple of dollars for accessories to no more than $60, truly amazing.

Besides boutiques like the one featured for this first issue of

Pose, fleas markets are truly the place to go on the weekends.

Whether you just want to chill, explore, and have fun or truly

make some serious damage and crank up your closet, flea

markets are extremely fun. You can find everything…literally

everything you might need from furniture to random trinkets

to vintage Chanel purses to timeless outfits, you won’t leave

disappointed. People may have the assumption that every-

thing is dirty or used, but don’t go in with that mentality. You

will leave there wanting more. Don’t forget that most of these

places don’t accept credit or debit cards, so make sure to hit

the ATM beforehand, even though you’ll probably have to

make a second run out to get more. Best part is, the people

there are willing to bargain, so don’t be scared to be asser-

When I crave food, it’s usually something from Aroma. They really do have something

for everyone, at all hours of the day. Wheth-er you’re a tofu-loving vegan or a complete

meat eater, you are guaranteed to leave here satisfied! The ambiance makes you

feel as though you’re calmly in your back-yard, until you realize you’re surrounded

by a bunch of other people who feel the same. Don’t be surprised to run into celebrities who stop by for lunch; this

is definitely the spot to be and you’ll soon see why.

One of my favorite local places where you can savor down some amazingly fluffy pancakes that taste straight out of your kitchen at home. The hipster environment is so welcom-

ing and really draws attention with its eye-catching décor. You can even stay

until lunch and there’s no way you’ll resist their cupcakes and other baked

goods. They’re all irresistible…no joke.

describe what it’s like to satisfy your crave of a good grilled cheese sand-wich and fries at 2 in the morning. Located right down the street from the Beverly Center, you’re bound to see some interesting characters and get an idea of what laid back, young Los

Where do I begin with Katana! Located right across the street from the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd., coming here will truly give you a luxury dinner night out. Although it is a bit

on the pricey side, it is completely worth it for the quality of Japanese cuisine that you

can’t just find anywhere. Just being there makes you feel important. And don’t

forget to dress to impress, you’ll never know whom you’ll run into.

my life is mad awkward

The first time I attempted to pay for the laundry with my USCard, I ended up paying for three wrong washers before I figured out I was looking at the wrong number on the machine.

My first boyfriend, a bunch of my friends, and I were watching a scary movie at someone’s house. I remember sitting in fetal position, leaning against my boyfriend. When the movie was over, I realized that my shirt had ridden up, so I stood up to pull down my shirt. As I did so, I accidentally pulled down my fabric shorts down as well. I turned around and my boyfriend and a few of my friends

were staring at my butt, which was scantily clad in a thong. To this day, my friends still make fun of me about

my mooning them.

One day during my class trip to Hawaii, I had a little too much pizza after swimming all day and felt my stom-ach muscles tighten here and there all evening. Finally, after waking up countless times because of my stom-achache, I decided to let it all out of my system. It was all good and satisfying until the moment I tried to flush down my “business,” but the toilet would only make weird gargling sounds. Since it was way past midnight, I figured I would take care of it first thing in the morning when I find the necessary gadgets. I ended up waking up to a deafening scream of my best friend and a bunch of disgusted faces. Even now, I can vividly picture my crush’s appalled expressions when I reluctantly con-fessed to my crime.

Share the moments when life makes you just want to dig a hole to crawl into.

my life is mad awkward

So it was the summer before freshman year at SC and I was a camp counselor for middle school kids. I was playing around with them in the pool when we decided to play volley-ball in there. Forgetting that I was wearing a bandeau swimsuit top, I jumped up to block the ball coming over the net. My top immediately fell to my stomach and my first reaction was to grab my chest and ask my friend if people noticed. I was laughing hysterically yet incredibly embarrassed. I stood there for about a good minute without pulling my top up because I had no idea who saw and how to do it discreetly…oh god!

Once I was at a Starbucks with a boyfriend, just chatting after school over white chocolate mochas. We hadn’t been going out for very long, so I was trying to be my wittiest. I took a sip of coffee, and when he said something, I fired off a clever response -- only I ended up spitting coffee all over his face because I forgot to swallow. I was mortified, but he was really sweet and wanted to know if I was okay and all that chivalrous jazz.

I was at Parkside one chilly morning, and I decided I wanted some tea. Now, I had never operated the hot water machine before, so after some careful examination I settled upon pressing a promising red button. It kind of made a whizzing sound, but nothing else seemed to happen. Perplexed, I got some kind fellow to teach me where the hot water valve was. After successfully collecting my water and getting food five minutes later, I looked back at the hot water machine to see it endlessly pouring steaming coffee all over the counter. Oops -- appar-ently that's what the big red button does. I ate my breakfast briskly that day.
