PROGRAM NOTES AND TRANSLATIONS
Al Shlosha D’Varim is a lyrical setting of the popular maxim from Pirkei Avot (Jewish morality laws). The text is: The world is sustained by three things, by truth, by justice, and by peace. Trouble Fly was a poem originally published in a collection of Susan Marie Swanson, and was later selected to be included in a poetry anthology titled: This Place I Know: Poems of Comfort. It was compiled to comfort the children of New York City after the events of September 11, 2001. Trouble, fly out of our house. We left the window open for you. Fly like smoke from a chimney. Fly like the whistle from a train. Fly far, far away from my family, Mumbling in their sleep. Trouble, fly. Let our night be a night of peace. Sesere eeye is from Moa Island, and is about the wind and the effects of the wind blowing on the mountains. This version was taught to the Sydney Children’s Choir by Australian indigenous music performer and teacher, Matthew Doyle.
Congratulations to Sarah Martin, who won the Soprano I category in the Valley Music Region Solo Contest last month. We continue RYC’s tradition of asking our soloists who will be competing in the State Solo Contest to present in our March concert, as a way to celebrate their success, inspire other singers, and to help prepare them for the competition at the end of April in Ellensburg. Stizzoso, mio stizzoso from the Italian opera, La Serva Padrona, sung by ‘Serpina’ Cross one, my cross one, you behave with arrogance, but no! it won’t help your position. You must keep to my prohibitions and keep silent, and not talk, Shut up! … shut up! … These are Serpina’s commands. Shut up! … shut up! … These are Serpina’s commands. Now I think you have understood, Yes, you have captured the message, Because already a long time has passed from when you first made acquaintance with me.
I Dreamed of Rain “It had been a particularly hot dry year in 2002, and wild fires were raging across much of the western US. The political scene felt equally troubling and out-of-control to me: The American government seemed intent on invading Iraq. It was as if the whole world was on fire. In the midst of all this unrest, I began to have dreams of rain; the kind of luscious healing rain that comes to renew the natural world and the human soul after a long drought. The words and music for this song are a direct translation of that exhilarating feeling. We no longer have to repeat the mistakes of our ancestors. We are free to forgive, release the pain, and start over again with a clean slate.” Jan Garrett, composer. Ziguenerleben Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a prolific German composer of the Romantic Period. Consonare sings this translation of the original German lyrics. A woods filled with shadows of beech trees and pine, With whispering branches and leaves on the vine, Where magical flames always flicker and shine, While dancing with rainbows of ev’ry design. Here gather the gypsies who roam ev’rywhere, The dashing young gypsies with long, silky hair, Whose bodies are warmed by the Nile’s blessed flow, And tanned by the brilliance of Spain’s sunny glow. The warm blazing campfire is lighting the trees. The men strong and handsome are taking their ease, The women assemble preparing the food, And all fill their goblets to brighten the mood. Now stories and songs form an unending chain, As bright as the colorful gardens of Spain. The queen of the gypsies now chants loud and clear, Her magical words fight off danger and fear. Now dark-eyed young ladies begin with their dance While flaming red torches bring sparkling romance, With pulsating cymbal and luring guitars, The dance grows wilder beneath gypsy stars. The dancers are weary; the campfire dies They sleep while the beech trees hum sweet lullabies, To visit his homeland a gypsy may yearn, And now in his dreams he can swiftly return. But then in the morning the sun shines its light, And wipes out the visions and dreams of the night. It’s time to be moving, the gypsy must go, And where are the visions? Does anyone know?
