This season of the year is the time where students complete their academic and vocational studies; it is also a time where teachers and parents reap the outcome of their long investment which culminates with the graduation of their students.

It is well known that education is the main factor which decides the status of individuals in their societies through which they acquire enough scientific knowledge about their environment and society. Needless to say, accessibility of education is considered among the most fundamental human rights. Basing its strategies on these principles therefore, the government of Eritrea has been making massive investment in ensuring equitable and quality access of education in all corners of the country, and in so doing has been equipping every national with the needed knowledge to enable them become beneficiaries of their national resources equally and mind the growth of the country in accordance. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, by the wake of independence, in 1990/1991, there were 393 schools all the way from pre-school level to high-school, while the statistics registered a 400% growth supplementing the number to 1600 after independence. Vocational schools on their part grew from only 2 to 11 at the time. Besides, the government has established a handful of colleges to nurture compatible citizens in all domains.

In this era of science and technology, the livelihoods of people solely rely on education. Especially in the western world, education has not only become a fundamental right of citizens, but has also been commercialized. In some parts of the western world, a student needs over 100,000 Dollars to complete his/her first degree, which leaves only the privileged class of the society with an opportunity to learn while the others are bound not to. Unlike this very prevailing reality, the government of Eritrea has since day one of independence been allocating most of its national income in the sector of education thereby providing free access to education to every single citizen.

The distinctiveness of the Eritrean educational policy is therefore defined by the opportunity it provides to every citizen to secure their future. Most countries in the world don’t consider the prospects of their citizens who fail their secondary school leaving examinations. But not in Eritrea; students are provided diploma and certificate programs if they couldn’t score for their degree studies. Not only that, but students who fail to score for these three options join the National Vocational Training Center, where they receive quality vocational training. By far, the main goal of these opportunities is to provide the young generation with diverse fields of studies and enable them discover their area of inclination.

Although the prospects provided in the sector of education are broad, the national goals laid in this domain are even bigger. Henceforth, the government of Eritrea has strengthened its efforts to supplement the methods of education with the needed technological facilities and equip the laboratories and workshops accordingly.

To make this national vision and goal sensible, the commitment of students, teachers and parents should also be reinforced vis-a-vis the efforts being put in to effect by the government. Besides, the benefits of education are dual; first is the individual and the society on the other. Accordingly, students need to intensify their efforts and grasp these opportunities, while the parents need to inspire their children in the sector. It is only through the concerted effort of the government and the society the national goal could be accomplished and the nation could prosper.

Aron Hidru

It was in the military - some seven-eight years back. We were a group of workmates in an open office where everybody’s behavior can be observed closely. We had a boss whom we loved a lot when we assess his overall behavior and more importantly his intentions as a long-time workmate, as a boss and as a father were very good. He was in the commonly shared office with us. There were good qualities we loved to imitate from him. He used to exercise regularly. He was a very responsible person and loved the job he had to do very much. He tried to help us a lot even in dealing with our private concerns – our relationship was not confined only to the job we used to do; he is a considerate person. He is diligent and knew how to go an extra mile in all aspects of life. But he had a single quality that makes you think that even a single limitation could multiply the good qualities a good person has by zero. Even though he was an extra mile ahead of everybody, that particular quality did have the potential to make him go miles backward.

There was one situation in which his limitation was evidently disclosed and this bad behavior was a bit irritating to many of us. As he was very industrious, he had planted lemon trees in his courtyard. We all (the whole office as a unit) used to make use of the fruits of these lemon trees – they were not privately his but they were almost public as they were used in our common cafeteria. This was one of the things that enabled him to be an extra mile ahead of everybody there. The first day he wanted to fence the lemon trees, he called three of us by name in the usual commanding tone of a military norm. As we assumed that it was part of our formal job, we were not angry to be approached in that manner. We knew that in the military ordering somebody in a commanding tone is not uncommon and unacceptable when one is required to carry out job- related activities. Further, in such cases, when you think generally in terms of the requirements and norms of military science and/or practice, it is not sensible to be too curious to ask about the details as to why and what you are wanted to do. While curiosity can hardly be totally undone, you customarily suppress your curiosity in such cases. Then when we reached near his courtyard, he allotted to us our respective assignments and we

knew that we were being asked not to do something that is related to our formal assignment. Then when

we knew that we had been asked for personal favor, we started to complain about his unnecessary commanding tone while asking personal favors. Since we were all not less assertive and there was no problem to be so in the area (because the leaders in the area had the good quality of allowing us to air any sincere concern or reservation), we could have refused him if we wanted to do so because his inability to communicate effectively and politely annoyed us very much. But we rationalized that he was a good person and that even though he shouldered the burdens associated with the lemon trees, it was all of us who enjoyed the fruits of his hard work. Very unfortunately, many people in the area used to complain about his lack of interpersonal skill to communicate politely and effectively.

When these things were repeated time and again, little by little our tolerance started to get eroded. When some of us were about to share their feelings with him, one friend shared with us a nice strategy to be used in similar circumstances in dealing with somehow less pleasant personalities. Thereafter we started to employ his strategy in all other relationships in our life. The friend told us that his strategy was what he learned from what he observed from the personal style of

some religious people – from what he observed the way these people reacted to individuals who may mistreat them. He claims that there are some religious people who say, “May God bless you” even to the people they happen to insult them or treat them negatively. In his words, they feel pity for those

who mistreat them. He confirmed to us that the strategy he borrowed from religious persons is what he practically and repeatedly tested. According to the advice of our workmate, if you pity someone who mistreats you by analyzing what the problem behind his or her limitation could be, you are less likely to feel bad and get angry. My friend is right because if you harbor such a perspective in dealing with people, you get even inclined to help them heal their problems let alone to be angry with them. This strategy, our friend strongly argues, enables a person to have peace of mind. The point is it would be basically better for any person to be polite (or generally to have a pleasant personality) unless he or she lacks the skill or talent to be so. Accordingly, it would have been better for our boss to be polite and treat people accordingly. But he lacked the skill to be so. We had better not blame such people; instead they have to be excused when you really try to examine and come to realize that there may be something wrong at some point in their socialization – starting from their early childhood. The friend who shared the strategy with us has the habit of analyzing the whole person when something like this happens to him (such things as the person’s past, the socio-economic situation and overall wellbeing of

the person) and, then in what he has to analyze he believes that he is likely to come across some factors that enable him to pity the person and not blame him or her.

We all adored the advice our

friend provided us with. As a result of his advice, we came to love the boss as he was. The friend is not only older than we were but he had also more cumulative life experiences when compared to the rest of us and all of us used to consider him our informal mentor – and for some us he is mentor until now. The good thing is his mentorship enabled us to enjoy the mentorship of our common boss by enabling us to be more tolerant. If you are tolerant and have inclusive personal outlook you can benefit from the mentorship of almost everybody as everybody has a lesson to teach if we are good listeners and skillful enough to tolerate the idiosyncrasies of others.

But the friend who told us the strategy told our boss during the time the boss was transferred from military to a civilian life how we felt when he was treating us that way. He told him in a quite polite way how great he was but that particular limitation could have the potential to multiply his greatness by zero as people generally tend to observe and judge others selectively. He is right people tend to underestimate the qualities a person may have and judge the person by selectively referring to a single weakness. In this case what is within control is weeding out such potentially avoidable limitations.

Carrot or Stick?PArt I We cannot prevent people not to

be selectively judgmental – this is beyond control.

Let me finish this part of the article by sharing with the reader some of the points the friend shared with us in an attempt to substantiate his strategy of dealing with the limitations people may have.

The energy wasted in cultivating, fencing or watering the lemon tree is the same whether we were treated politely or in less polite manner. In fact in the latter case, that is, when you feel bad because you are not treated properly, you multiply the energy you have to waste doing that job as you are unlikely to enjoy doing the job in such a situation. The problem is we humans beings are not endowed to think and act in a logical manner simply because we are emotional beings and not logical beings, according to what Dale Carnegie has asserted in his book entitled ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People.

When things are examined from what is more important for those who tend to feel either bad or good when they are mistreated, basically it should not matter whether you are treated politely or otherwise. What is more important is how a person responds to what happens to him or her in his or her immediate or distant environment. Dr. Stephen strongly asserts that it is not what happens to us that constrains what we do and hurts us more, rather it is how we respond to what happens to us that is really important and has the potential to cause us either to feel bad or good. Shakespeare once said that there is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

There is a tendency to focus on the end product. Most of the time we judge things at face value and lay obvious reasons for what ultimately manifests. For instance we may say that a certain writer is successful because that writer works hard. This conclusion may be right but it also omits many other facts that may have contributed for that person’s success. Many a times the omitted factors are values. That person, for instance might have been humble that may have contributed a lot in winning that person many friends through whom a huge opportunity presented. However, humbleness is not stated as a reason for the writer’s success whenever people talk about the person. The point is the success of a given person may have far reaching reasons than just the obvious and we need to be attentive in studying more about them. We can take Isaac Newton’s case for an example.

Anyone who has ever written and read about the great Isaac Newton is bound to be challenged by his mind and personality. Newton was a strange, solitary figure, and the wellsprings of his behavior were hidden even from his contemporaries. A biographer of his time compared Newton to the River Nile, whose great

powers were known but whose source had not been discovered. The story of Isaac Newton is indeed one of those stories of a humble beginning changing the world forever. Precisely so, it is an incredible inspiration to many. It can also serve as a proof of what has always been suggested as a recipe for success and achievement.

Newton’s story echoes the motto ‘making way out of no way’, for his beginning was not an easy one. Newton was born prematurely and in his first few years he was extremely fragile. In fact no one expected that he would live long. His father died before he was even born and after his mother remarry, he was forced to live with his grandmother in isolation with no parental or family love. As if this was not enough to make life hard, Newton grew up in a time where England was enmeshed in terrors and seemingly ceaseless civil war. But the main hallmark of great people is that no matter how hard situations might seem, one can make one’s destiny through the force inside each and every one of us. Proof of this fact can be seen from the following pieces of stories of Newton.

Determination - Newton’s greatest gift was that he was extremely determined. He evidently overcame his physical

weakness by the time he reached school age. A schoolmate reported that Newton challenged a bully who had kicked him in the belly to a fight and “beat him till he would fight no more” winning out because he had “more spirit and resolution.” The bully stood high in the class, and Newton was so determined “to beat him also at his books” that “by hard work he finally succeeded, and then gradually rose to be the first in the school.

Persistence - When Newton was 14, his mother took him back into her home, her second husband having died. She conceived the idea of making him a farmer, but the experiment proved an

unqualified failure. Newton found farming totally distasteful. Instead of attending properly to his chores, he would read, make wooden models with his knife, or dream. Fortunately for science, his mother gave up the attempt and allowed him to prepare for Cambridge University. Indeed one of Newton’s famous quote remains to be “If I have done the public any service, it is due to my patient thought”, humbly confessing his persistence.

Hard work - At the age of 18, Newton entered Trinity College. In his early years at the University he was not outstanding in any way. Then he came under the influence of Isaac Barrow, a professor of mathematics and an extraordinary man. He was an able mathematician, a classicist, an astronomer and an authority in the field of optics. Barrow was one of the first to recognize Newton’s genius. But more so, what convinced Barrow was Newton’s habit of hard work. Soon after his student had taken a degree, Barrow resigned his professorship so that Newton might have it. Thus at 26 Newton was established in an academic post of distinction and was free to pursue his epoch-making studies. And he was able to sow the seeds of his revolutionary contributions to three distinct fields of scientific inquiry: mathematics, celestial mechanics and physical optics.

Concentration - At Cambridge Newton was the very model of an absent-minded professor. One of his students wrote that he never knew Newton “to take any

recreation or pastime either in riding out to take the air, walking, bowling, or any other exercise whatever, thinking all hours lost that were not spent in his studies.” He often worked until two or three o’clock in the morning ate sparingly and sometimes forgot to eat altogether. When reminded that he had not eaten, he would go to the table and “eat a bite or two standing.” Newton rarely dined in the college hall; when he did, he was apt to appear “with shoes down at heels, stockings untied, and his head scarcely combed.” It was said that he often delivered his lectures to an empty hall, apparently with as much satisfaction as if the room had been full of students

Modesty - Last but not least, Newton was a modest man considering his accomplishments and intelligence. Asked one day how he had come to make his remarkable discoveries, he replied, “By always thinking about them.” And his famous saying ever “If I have seen further than others it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” says it all.

From these extraordinary stories of an extraordinary person, we can learn the value of values and qualities. One need not only be hard worker to be successful and achieve. It is not that simple. A true work of genius that can change the world and make life better often comes when we are more than just hard worker and enmesh our work in values. Love, care, commitment, faith, hope… can help a great deal. We might as well try them.

It is a simple and natural act but saves our day from to the blues. It is when the corner of your mouth turns up, and when your cheeks come out round and lifted with a brush of a blush, your eyes wrinkle or disappear and your dimples come out (if you have one);we find our self shining without making effort. This natural phenomenon tells the world that you are happy and satisfied with what you have; a smile!!

Some smiles are so unforgettable; it might have just taken amoment but the memory of it to the other person lasts as long as he lives. Yet a smile can never be bought or stolen. And if somehow we tried to, it would not even look real. In fact, most of us hate the appearances of a smile that takes effort or which is too perfect. Smiling is something that is understood by everyone despite the difference in culture, age, race or religion.

So many studies have shown that smiling really does make some one more attractive and likable. It’s a natural gift and we all need to cherish it.

Smiling usually shows our love, respect, patience, and hospitality toward others. However, peoples’ perception about smile varies across societies.

From what I have read in the web, there are apparently some cultures that actually perceive smiling as a negative expression and consider it unwelcoming. Here too much smiling can be viewed as a sign of shallowness and dishonesty. The Japanesefor instance are said to smile when they are confused or angry.

In other parts of Asia, people may smile when they are embarrassed, or their smile is reserved for close friends and family members only. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover emotional pain or disgrace. Many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers to be unusual and a very suspicious behavior. And the Vietnamese people may tell the saddest story of how a family member died or left the country and end their story with a smile.

Anumber of experts assert that smiling may not only bean outward expression of a happy feeling but it may actually be able to cause us a happy feeling. It means you can just turn off every bad feeling by just trying to shade a smile. Despite this fact, we don’t smile more often.

Many of us are too bored or too tired to give a smile, it would be good if we could make a little effort; for a smile doesn’t cost anything but can make a lot of difference

for someone else’s day. You must have encountered this many times: you are having a low mood day and youmeetsomeone who happen tosmile at you with gratitude, and you end up smiling for no reason. That smile can lift up your mood without you noticing it.

And then there are the fake smiles. Fake smiles involve only the mouth, while real smiles—Duchenneas they are called by psychologists—reach up to the eyes. More often the smile that’s coming out with a lot of effort is obvious that it’s fake. Take for example the politicians and the superstars who wave at us with a smile that never changescolor; no matter how hard they try, we can notice the dullness beneath that smile; unfortunately for them, smiling is a job. The truth is it’s not hard at all foranyone to detect a fake smile.

All smiles do not come from a happy feeling, in some cases it could be out of nervousness too. When you are trapped in an awkward situation, smile can be your only way out. At times fake smiles can be a way out. We might be having a terrible day and struggling not to take out our frustration on someone else. A smile can be our rescue.

In his popular website ‘PsyBlog’, psychologist Jeremy Deanstates that one of the hidden powers of a smile is that it helps us recover from social slip-ups.

“…The function of embarrassment is to get us out of tight social spots; therefore embarrassed smiles we display, sometimes involvinglooking down and emitting a silly little laugh is

All In A Smile…

designed to elicit fellow-feeling from other people so they think less of the slip and forgive us more quickly…” Jeremy explains.

Smiling make us more charming and more approachable by others. We all know that and we try so hard to perfect our smile. How many times have we found ourselves facing the mirror, figuring out which smile looks great on us and remind our self “that’s the smile I should use”?

But the beautiful thing is, no matter how someone thinks he/she has an ugly smile; there is no one who looks ugly with a free and natural smile.

When your smiling never fades, you have a great force of attraction; things around you glow and you will never run short of a companion. The friend you choose to spend most of your time with the person you run to when depressed, the café that we frequent most and the idols we idolize as teachers of peace and love, they are those gifted with an endless smile. So let’s smile together and let our day shine bright.

If a smile cannot still be coaxed out of you then consider this: people who smile more may live longer. So smile for longevity!

Official government figures in Britain show BBC has handed over-generous severance payments to its senior staff in violation of the corporation’s own guidelines.

According to the latest figures by the National Audit Office (NAO), the state-broadcaster has given £25 million in pay-offs to 150 of its high-ranking personnel since 2010.

The NAO said around one fourth of the payments more than the corporation had to pay out under the staffs’ contracts describing the situation as “poor value for money”.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has prepared a package of political reforms in a bid to put an end to days of anti-government protests and social unrest across the country.

On Monday, Rousseff said she would send her political reforms to Congress on Tuesday.

“Tomorrow we are going to send to Congress our suggestions for a plebiscite spelling out the general lines which we view as more important,” Rousseff said.

She also said the plebiscite was part of her attempt to combine forces with state governors and city mayors in offering “rapid and concrete solutions to problems of the economy, transport, health, education and politics.”

On June 24, following talks with state governors, cabinet members, and city mayors, Rousseff said, “I am going to press for a referendum for the election of a constituent assembly tasked with political reform.”

According to the Datafolha survey released on Saturday, the Brazilian president’s approval rating has gone from 57 percent to 30 percent since June 6-7.

The survey added that the number of those who thought that Rousseff’s government was doing a “bad or terrible” job has increased from nine to 25 percent.

The protests in Brazil erupted on June 11, when people in Sao Paulo took to the streets to condemn a price hike in public transport.

The unrest spread quickly across the nation as protesters also voiced their anger over the high cost of the World Cup, poor public service and political corruption.

On several occasions, Brazilian police resorted to tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

In a bid to end the unrest, President Rousseff pledged on June 21 to improve public services and to fight harder against widespread corruption in the country.

Pioneering search engine AltaVista is due to be shut down on 8 July.

AltaVista was one of the first search engines to index significant amounts of web content and proved hugely popular before Google debuted.

Current owner Yahoo announced its demise in a blogpost that detailed

Scientists have obtained the sharpest view yet of features in the Sun’s atmosphere using an experimental camera launched on a short-lived rocket.

The system returned just five minutes of data, but this was enough to identify a fascinating new phenomenon the researchers refer to as “sparkles”.

These are bright points that appear along magnetic field lines where huge amounts of energy are released.

The discovery is being reported at the UK National Astronomy Meeting.

It may help to explain how the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is so much hotter than the star’s surface, its photosphere.

“The corona is millions of degrees hotter, and this has been a decades’ long puzzle,” said Prof Robert Walsh from the University of Central Lancashire.

“The sparkles - we actually call them extreme ultraviolet dots - we believe are evidence of very localised but frequent energy release that could build up and heat the corona very easily,” he told reporters.

Video of the scene, built from a series of images, can be seen on YouTube.

Pictures of the dots were acquired using Nasa’s High Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C).

BBc censured For Golden Pay-Offs

the latest round of products and services it plans to shut down.

Yahoo acquired the AltaVista technology, index and name when it bought ad firm Overture in 2003.

After the shutdown anyone seeking the AltaVista site will be redirected to the main Yahoo search page.

AltaVista was launched in 1995 when search engines generally did a poor job of logging information on the web’s rapidly growing population of sites.

The search engine was popular because it had indexed about 20 million webpages, far more than any rival at the time. It developed its own “crawler” technology that

The NAO concluded that the broadcasters’ pay-offs were too often in breach of public trust and its own regulations on severance without good reason, leading to an extra cost to the British license-fee payers of more than £1 million.

In reaction to the report, BBC’s new director-general Tony Hall admitted the corporation had lost its way regarding the severance payments over the past years.Hall said they are introducing a £150,000 ceiling for the future severance pay-offs at the corporation.

did the job of finding webpages and logging what was on them. It also used fast computers behind the scenes to return results quickly.

The combination made AltaVista one of the top web destinations until 2001 when the number of searches conducted via Google overtook it.

The software behind AltaVista was created by US computer scientists Paul Flaherty and Louis Monier and Briton Michael Burrows while all three worked in the research labs of DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation).

In 1998, DEC was bought by PC maker Compaq which started AltaVista’s long decline. It was sold off in 1999 to a venture capital firm who prepared an IPO that was abandoned in the wake of the dotcom crash of 2001. AltaVista was then bought by Overture in 2003 and became part of Yahoo when that firm was bought later that year.

Search analyst Danny Sullivan wrote a eulogy for AltaVista on the Search Engine Land site saying the search service was “loved” during its brief heyday and that it deserved a better send off than Yahoo had given it.

“Yes, it was time for you to be retired,” he wrote. “But you deserved your own post, not having your closure mixed in among the other many products being axed.”

However, Brazilians were not swayed by her proposed reforms as new demonstrations have been staged since then.

This is a next-generation instrument that was tested briefly on a sounding rocket, a small vehicle that takes a payload into space for just a few minutes before falling back down.

The intention was to validate the design concept and performance of Hi-C so that it can be put forward for a future orbital mission.

The instrument was directed to look at an active region in the middle of the Sun.

As well as the sparkles, it saw huge clumps of charged gas (plasma) racing along “highways” sculpted by the star’s magnetic field.

This speeding material was moving inside a so-called solar filament, a prominence of dense plasma that can on occasions erupt outwards from the Sun.

“The plasma was moving in opposite directions, back and fore, like on a motorway,” said Prof Walsh

“We’ve never seen that before and that gives us an idea about the fundamental scale in the filaments.”

The sparkles themselves were off to the left of the filament in a region of twisted magnetic field lines.

The dots were sporadic - they typically lasted about 25 seconds - and although they appeared small on the scale of the Sun, they were immense - equivalent in width to

the UK.But it is the energy released by the

sparkles that is really impressive. The team calculates it to be at

least one million, million, million, million Joules in each dot.

“Consider the consumption of energy in the UK in an entire year - it gets released in one of these dots in about 20-30 seconds,” explained Prof Walsh.

“When you add that up all over the surface of the Sun you are talking about something that could

easily tackle the coronal heating problem. But to pin this down we’d have to fly Hi-C on a satellite.”

Nasa’s Marshall Space Flight Center led the Hi-C launch with partners that included the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Lockheed Martin’s Solar Astrophysical Laboratory, UClan, and the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The UK NAM runs all week at the University of St Andrews.
