Greetings students and parents!

On August 17, 2020 we will begin a new school year! Each school years brings another opportunity

for us to positively impact our students so that they are college and/or career ready when they

graduate from Dunwoody HS. Though this year will begin with remote teaching and learning, we will

continue to collaborate to strengthen and improve our instructional practices. As educators and

support staff, we know that we have a significant lifelong impact on the lives of the students we

encounter. We are committed to supporting the whole child by providing engaging & relevant

instruction and social & emotional support to our students.

I know that the start of this school year is unlike any school year we have seen in the past. However, I

do know that we, the Dunwoody Wildcats are resilient and dedicated to teaching and learning! I am

inspired and proud of the collaborative work of our teachers who continue to find creative ways to

engage students via remote learning. I can’t wait to engage in learning with our new and returning

students as I participate in some of our remote classrooms. I am aware that there will be some

technology challenges due to the number of students throughout DCSD that will be accessing VERGE

through Clever/Launchpad. However, the faculty & staff of DHS will provide support to our students

and parents throughout this process. This remote learning guide has been created to provide you with

a central location to get the support and information you need so that your student is successful. I will

continue to use School Messenger to send notifications to parents of any new information or updates

concerning remote learning.

Speaking of notifications, here, at DHS, we value open and reciprocal communication between the

school and home. Therefore, parents, it is imperative that your contact information, including phone

number and email address is up to date in Infinite Campus Parent Portal. This will ensure you receive

communication from your child’s teachers and information from the principal via School

Messenger. Also, consider joining our amazing PTSO and subscribing to the DHS News E-Blast. To

join the PTSO and subscribe to the e-blast click here. Additionally, you can follow me on Twitter

@DunwoodyHS to receive quick announcements, highlights, and updates throughout the school

year.

As stated before, the beginning of this school year is unlike any school year we’ve experienced in the

past. Nonetheless, I am still excited about the new school year and all the promise and unlimited

possibilities of success it will bring! With an extraordinary faculty & staff and supportive parents &

community, our students are poised to be lifelong learners and productive members of an increasingly

diverse society.

Sincerely,

Priscilla Cole, Proud Principal

Dunwoody HS

Teaching & Learning

Asynchronous and Synchronous Learning

• Asynchronous leaning occurs through online instruction without real-time interaction and is self-paced with timelines set.

• Synchronous learning is online or distance learning that happens in real time. Live instruction where teachers and students are engaged in learning together.

Teachers and students are expected to be active participants in asynchronous and

synchronous virtual learning. Teachers will provide students with opportunities that foster social

engagement (discourse) through written assignments or synchronous sessions. Whether in an asynchronous

or synchronous session, students should experience opportunities to interact with other students and their

teacher daily. Teachers will have flexibility with the implementation on use of the synchronous time such has

the required minutes can be chunked throughout the class period. Through both virtual learning settings,

students can learn technology skills in addition to subject-area knowledge. Additionally, students will learn

how to manage their time and be accountable for their assignments.

• Teachers will establish Rituals and Routines for the virtual learning environment.

• Teachers will utilize VERGE or Google Classroom to post asynchronous assignments.

• Teachers will utilize Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet to host daily live synchronous

instructional sessions. Some sessions may be recorded for viewing later.

• Teachers will have published daily office hours for students and parents.

• Teachers will utilize Wednesdays for one-on-one student conferencing, parent conferencing and

professional learning day.

Remote teaching & learning is different than in person teaching & learning, but the

fundamentals are still the same. Educators, students, and parents must all collaborate to

ensure the success of our students. We recognize that remote learning can be stressful to manage for

some of the students and families we serve. Here a few helpful tips to help support students and families

through this process.

• Students should actively participate in live synchronous and asynchronous instruction.

• Students should complete instructional activities assigned by teachers within the expected timelines.

• Students should review teacher feedback and complete any follow-up activities as assigned by the

teacher.

• Families should support students in being successful by establishing routines and habits that support

their success in remote learning.

• Families should ensure that students are adhering to the Student Code of Conduct and that they

practice Digital Citizenship while in the remote learning environment.

• Students and families should proactively notify their teacher, counselor or school administrator with

any concerns about progress or additional support needed.

Student Attendance

Student attendance will be a way to ensure that students have the academic and social-emotional support for virtual learning. Teachers will mark student attendance based upon participation in remote learning activities such as uploading assignments based upon pre-determined deadlines and participating in live synchronous sessions.

• Students with technology will be expected to participate in all synchronous and asynchronous activities and earn attendance through VERGE, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and/or Zoom.

• Students without technology will be put on an individual plan as developed by the classroom teacher for additional support and contacted daily via an alternate communication plan.

The monitoring of attendance at the local school will take place by the classroom teacher for every class with

the support of paraprofessionals, counselors, teacher librarians, library media assistants, assistant principals,

data clerks, registrars, administrative assistants/secretaries, Student Support Specialists, Post-secondary

Specialists, nurses, and other support personnel.

Student Presence

• Attendance will be measured by the full day. Students are expected to participate in each class.

• Attendance is defined as evidence of engagement with the assignment.

• Attendance can be measured in the following ways (including, but not limited to):

o VERGE, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and/or Zoom check in o Assignments submitted that were due on that day o Questions to answer on VERGE, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, and/or Zoom o Participation in an online discussion o Class participation during synchronous session o Login to synchronous session o Phone call or email with the parent/guardian or related services provider

Student Absence

• Excused Absence – the parent/guardian contacts the teacher to inform that the student is unable

to participate in any activities for the day.

• Unexcused Absence

o The student does not participate in any part of the activities for the day. o The student has not checked in with the teacher. o The student’s parent/guardian does not contact the teacher.

Parent

• Encourage and require the student to participate in all synchronous and asynchronous activities and

assignments.

• Inform the local school designee [email protected] and teacher of an absence

within a 24-hour time period of the absence.

• Inform the school if something is occurring that is preventing the student from participating in virtual

learning.

“Research shows that attendance is an important factor in student achievement.”

Grading Protocol Learning is an ongoing continuum and as such there must be accountability. There will be a minimum number

of assignments for each grading category elementary through high school that is a balance across the grading

protocol assigned to students per week. All virtual assignments will have a pre-determined deadline as

communicated by the teacher.

• Kindergarten students will continue to use the Kindergarten report card.

• Students in grades 1 through 5 will receive grades using an alpha grading scale.

• Students in grades 1 through 5 will receive a P or F for specials classes (alpha grade for some magnet

schools). • Students in grades 6 through 12 will receive grades using a numeric grading scale.

• Students will receive a M for all missing assignments. Missing assignments will calculate to a zero until

completed by the communicated predetermined deadline established by the classroom teacher.

• In high school, students must pass a course in order to receive credit; therefore, you will only be promoted to the next grade if the required credits are earned.

Grading Category

Percentage

Minimum # of Assignments

Per 4.5-week grading period Formative & Diagnostic Assessments 0% 1 Assessment Tasks (Skills & Homework) 25% 3 Classwork (Guided, Independent, and Group Practice) 45% 4 Quizzes, Tests, and Projects 30% 2

Assignments & Assessments • All assignments for the week should reflect a balance across all categories based upon the DCSD

Grading Protocol. • Assignments should meet the expectations of 21st Century Learning Skills.

o Communication o Collaboration o Critical Thinking o Creativity

Late and Missing Assignments It is the expectation that students submit assignments in a timely manner. All assignments will have a pre- determined deadline. If a student does not complete the assignment by the pre-determined due date, a M will be recorded for the assignment with a score of a zero.

Zero Guidelines • Zeros earned by students will be posted in Infinite Campus for students in grades 1 through 12. • Parents/Guardians will be able to view all grades and are encouraged to monitor grades through

Infinite Campus Parent Portal. • Teachers will provide students with the opportunity to recover failed or missed work within a pre-

determined due date established by the teacher. • A deficiency report will be provided to parents via email or US mail to the parent/guardian indicating

the plan for improvement. Teachers will document contacts to parent/guardian in Infinite Campus. • A student will receive a zero for the assignment only if the student has missed the pre-determined due

date and the parent/guardian has been successfully notified of the deficiency to complete the assignment.

Progress Reports & Report Cards Progress reports will be available through Infinite Campus. Parents are encouraged to view progress reports and report cards using Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

Supporting Students with Disabilities

Special education teachers will provide virtual specialized instruction for students with disabilities during

Distance learning as we start the 2020-2021 school year. Teachers will ensure that individual IEP services are

implemented per the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) Continuity of Learning instructional schedule.

Co-Teaching: Teachers (general ed. and special ed.) will co-plan and are expected to participate in live

teaching sessions together to ensure that students with disabilities receive this service per the IEP. Students

will participate in a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences. Special Education

teachers will be expected to fully engage in the learning process during live co-teaching sessions to ensure that

accommodations, specially designed instruction, and individualized supports are provided. The frequency (how

often) of these services will align to the student's IEP. The duration (length) of each session will follow the

DCSD remote learning instructional schedule.

Small group: Small group IEP services will be provided according to the DCSD remote learning instructional

schedule to the greatest extent possible. Special education teachers will develop a schedule and provide

synchronous instructional sessions for students that require small group instruction. The frequency (how

often) of these services will align to the student's IEP. The duration (length) of each session will follow the

DCSD remote learning instructional schedule.

Intellectual Disabilities (ID): Students who receive services in a self-contained program class per their IEP

will receive instruction utilizing the Department's approved adapted curriculum in either a synchronous or

asynchronous learning format.

Deaf hard of Hearing (DHH), Vision Impaired (VI), Orthopedic Impaired (OI): Students will be

provided opportunities to meet virtually with itinerant teachers (i.e. DHH, VI, OI) for instructional support and

to work on IEP goals/objectives to the greatest extent possible. Itinerant teachers will have ongoing

communication with classroom teachers to coordinate efforts and problem solve access challenges. Sign-

language interpreters will provide support with language communication during synchronous instruction.

IEP Goals: Goals/objectives will be addressed during remote learning to the greatest extent possible. It is

expected that some individual student goals/objectives may not be able to be addressed during remote

learning.

Related Services (Speech/language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy): Related Services

will be provided using a Teletherapy platform (i.e. Microsoft Teams or Zoom) via one-on-one and/or small

group as appropriate.

Accommodations: Accommodations will be provided to students per the IEP and/or 504 plan.

For questions regarding your child’s IEP or 504 plan, see the contact information below.

Counseling

Counseling and Support Services

The DeKalb County School District counseling program aligns with specific standards from the Georgia

Standards of Excellence, promoting mindsets and behaviors that enhance the learning process and create a

culture of college and career readiness for all students. School counselors will virtually provide classroom,

small group and individual guidance sessions to support students through the academic process. The primary

domains include:

Academic Development—Standards guiding school counseling programs to implement strategies and activities to support and maximize each student’s ability to learn. Career Development—Standards guiding school counseling programs to help students 1) understand the connection between school and the world of work and 2) plan for and make a successful transition from school to postsecondary education and/or the world of work, and from job to job across the life span. Social/Emotional Development—Standards guiding school counseling programs to help students manage emotions and learn and apply interpersonal skills.

Social Work

School social work is a specialized area of practice in the broad field of social work. Many of the economic,

educational, and social challenges in the families of school-aged children have increased over the years, thus

expanding the scope of service provided by the school social worker.

• function as a link between the home, school, and community by bringing people together to promote

the educational success of students;

• intervene when there is a social, familial, or economic challenge that impacts the learning process of

students;

• strengthen students’ learning opportunities, achievements, and socio-emotional functioning by

providing services. • assists students and parents who meet the criteria under the McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Any student attending a DeKalb County school is eligible for social work services. To obtain the assistance of

the school social worker, a written referral can be made by lead teachers, counselors, assistant principals, and

principals.

Why are the class times on my child’s schedule and in Parent Portal different from the remote instructional schedule? The class times on your child’s schedule and in Parent Portal reflect the traditional bell schedule for in-person learning. Once we return to in-person learning, we will resume the 90-minute block schedule.

What happens if I don’t do an assignment? All assignments will have a pre-determined deadline. If a student does not complete the assignment by the pre-determined due date, a M will be recorded for the assignment with a score of a zero.

What if I turn in my assignment after the due date? The student will have the chance to complete the assignment after the original due date with a grade penalty established by the local school. If there are extenuating circumstances that can be verified, the penalty may not be applied.

What happens if my Chromebook breaks during remote learning? You can fill out this form https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/virtual-learning-support-ticket. Once the request is received, you will be asked to drop-off/pick-up your Chromebook at the school. Students and parents can drop-off Chromebooks that need repairs on Wednesdays, between 9am-1pm. Students will receive a replacement Chromebook if one is available at the time of drop-off. If one isn’t available, once the repairs are made, the student or parent will be contacted to pick up the repaired Chromebook.

What if my teacher assigns us work, but I am having trouble getting started or get stuck mid-way? Your teacher will be available for the duration of the period. However, you are also welcome to request a tutorial session on Wednesdays.

Do grades count? Yes. Students will receive grades using a numeric grading scale. Students will receive an M for all missing assignments.
