Telecom Industry Power IssuesEmerging markets’ growth in data and voice trac has increased demand for the construction of new cellular towers. This construction typically outpaces that of the electrical grid, especially in remote areas, resulting in the need for reliable o-grid power solutions.

Once all parties execute a long-term power purchase agreement, PGP will nance all upfront development costs and capital expenditures associated with the operations-wide tower “conversion” project. Tower operators will then purchase, on a monthly basis, all consumed electricity as the power o-taker.

PGP works with multiple technology providers to design systems using a number of dierent energy sources, including solar, wind, small hydro, and fuel cells. Determining the optimal mix of these dierent renewable energy sources, and properly sizing an included battery backup, often depends on details of the daily and yearly variation in electrical loads, uctuations in the weather pattern and specic project requirements, and these can vary widely for dierent sites

In-country EPC contractors will conduct all installations, O&M and post-sales support to ensure tower operators are completely satised with their systems. In addition, all systems have remote monitoring and Fast Response Teams to ensure systems stay online 24hrs per day.

Turn-key Solutions

Turn-key renewable power solutions will help to save tower operators 30-80% of their OpEx (operating expenditures) and PGP will provide 100% of the CapEx (capital expenditures) required for solution implementation.

OPIC BOARD APPROVES $150 MILLION FOR SOLAR SOLUTION FOR TELECOM TOWERS IN INDIA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Board of Directors of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) approved $150 million in nancing to expand the use of solar energy to power telecommunication towers in India, a project that will signicantly reduce CO2 emissions and create jobs in both the United States and India. Together with project sponsor Applied Solar Technologies (AST), tower companies in India are working to reduce their dependence on site-situated diesel powered generator sets, in part because tower operators in remote areas lack access to the electrical grid. The potential for higher fuel prices and mounting pressure to reduce CO2 emissions make the shift to renewable energy an important priority for the tower companies and cell operators generally. In recognition of their eorts to reduce their carbon footprint, AST's two largest customers won prestigious awards for their focus on more sustainable operations.

MAJOR UNITED STATES BASED TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANY

PROJECT OVERVIEWIn 2012, a major US based telecoms company required an o-grid

renewable energy solution for their California based site, which

depended on propane for power. The site lacks access to the grid, and

is unreachable through the winter months. Our technology partner

designed and installed a wind/solar/ storage system, which oset the

amount of propane needed to power the site.

Site Size: 1kW load, 24hrs/day

Annual OpEx Savings: More than USD $8,000

COASTAL MILITARY SITE

PROJECT OVERVIEWA military operation was spending thousands of US dollars each year to

operate and maintain a communications tower located at its coastal

post. Our technology partner was selected to design and install a

hybrid renewable energy system, consisting of an o-grid 4K vertical

axis wind turbine with 2 kilowatts of solar and battery storage. The

resulting wind and solar system now saves the military more than

$30,000 USD a year, with diesel fuel use nearly eliminated.

Solar PV: 2kW, with battery storage

Turbine: 4kW wind

Annual Savings: USD $30,000

PGP will create nancial models to determine a viable kilowatt/hr rate to be applied to the “long-term” power purchase agreement and present for execution

Parties will execute agreements to power cell towers with renewable energy generation solutions and to share tower site data

PGP will conduct a full nancial and operational analysis for each site to determine a kilowatt/hr baseline for cost savings and solution design

Once PPA is executed, in-country EPC contractors will install, operate and maintain tower sites for duration of agreement
