Respect by Aretha Franklin

Ms. Logan had faith in her children most of the time.

Exception: Cassie and her brothers went to the FORBIDDEN Wallace Store.

Cassie went to save her brother from being whipped with a belt.

Faith

Faith No More “Epic”Can you feel it ,see it, hear it today?

If you can't, then it doesn't matter anywayYou will never understand it 'cause it happens too fastAnd it feels so good, it's like walking on glassIt's so cool, it's so hip, it's alrightIt's so groovy, it's outta sightYou can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweetBut it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feetYou want it all but you can't have itIt's cryin', bleedin', lying on the floorSo you lay down on it and you do it some moreYou've got to share it, so you dare itThen you bare it and you tear itYou want it all but you can't have itIt's in your face but you can't grab itIt's alive, afraid, a lie, a sinIt's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a winIt's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter painIt's sad it happened and it's a shameYou want it all but you can't have itIt's in your face but you can't grab itWhat is it?It's itWhat is it?...

FIRE AND COTTONFIRE AND COTTON

Tobacco and cotton were grown.

Papa set fire to the cotton so Stacey could save TJ from being lynched and most of the county help put the fire out.

Papa and most of the county help put the fire out.

Most of the family crop was destroyed and TJ had passed away.

Alicia Keys “Girl on Fire”She's just a girl, and she's on fire

Hotter than a fantasy, lonely like a highwayShe's living in a world, and it's on firefilled with catastrophe, but she knows she can fly away

Oh, she got both feet on the groundAnd she's burning it downOh, she got her head in the cloudsAnd she's not backing down

(Chorus)This girl is on fireThis girl is on fireShe's walking on fireThis girl is on fire

Memories

As the years go by …. The whole world will never go back to the past ,the past,

it’s always rough, especially looking back

remembering all the best friends you don’t see

anymore , over silly old friends just over what you used to say about them, before you got to know them. What a wonderful

world by Louis Armstrong.

Louis Armstrong “What a Wonderful World”

RacismRacism wasn’t at all pretty with the Caucasians.

They Caucasians stuck-up which could be could be visualized by what was seen when Mr. Simms acted like he was better in every aspect of life just because he Jean were Caucasian.

Mr. Simms and Jean thought they were better than every African American in the state.

Brad Paisley and LL Cool J “Accidental Racist”To the man that waited on me at the Starbucks down on Main, I hope you understand

When I put on that t-shirt, the only thing I meant to say is I'm a Skynyrd fanThe red flag on my chest somehow is like the elephant in the corner of the southAnd I just walked him right in the roomJust a proud rebel son with an 'ol can of wormsLookin' like I got a lot to learn but from my point of view

I'm just a white man comin' to you from the southlandTryin' to understand what it's like not to beI'm proud of where I'm from but not everything we've doneAnd it ain't like you and me can re-write historyOur generation didn't start this nationWe're still pickin' up the pieces, walkin' on eggshells, fightin' over yesterdayAnd caught between southern pride and southern blame

They called it Reconstruction, fixed the buildings, dried some tearsWe're still siftin' through the rubble after a hundred-fifty yearsI try to put myself in your shoes and that's a good place to beginBut it ain't like I can walk a mile in someone else's skin

'Cause I'm a white man livin' in the southlandJust like you I'm more than what you seeI'm proud of where I'm from but not everything we've doneAnd it ain't like you and me can re-write historyOur generation didn't start this nationAnd we're still paying for the mistakesThat a bunch of folks made long before we cameAnd caught between southern pride and southern blame

Accidental Racist ContinuedDear Mr. White Man, I wish you understood

What the world is really like when you're livin' in the hoodJust because my pants are saggin' doesn't mean I'm up to no goodYou should try to get to know me, I really wish you wouldNow my chains are gold but I'm still misunderstoodI wasn't there when Sherman's March turned the south into firewoodI want you to get paid but be a slave I never couldFeel like a new fangled Django, dodgin' invisible white hoodsSo when I see that white cowboy hat, I'm thinkin' it's not all goodI guess we're both guilty of judgin' the cover not the bookI'd love to buy you a beer, conversate and clear the airBut I see that red flag and I think you wish I wasn't hereI'm just a white man(If you don't judge my do-rag)Comin' to you from the southland(I won't judge your red flag)Tryin' to understand what it's like not to beI'm proud of where I'm from(If you don't judge my gold chains)But not everything we've done(I'll forget the iron chains)It ain't like you and me can re-write history(Can't re-write history baby)Oh, Dixieland(The relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixin')I hope you understand what this is all about(Quite frankly I'm a black Yankee but I've been thinkin' about this lately)I'm a son of the new south(The past is the past, you feel me)And I just want to make things right(Let bygones be bygones)Where all that's left is southern pride(RIP Robert E. Lee but I've gotta thank Abraham Lincoln for freeing me, know what I mean)It's real, it's realIt's truth

Logan Land

Land that Cassie Grandfather owned.

It meant a lot to the family because it was their livelihood.

All of their chores and food depended on the land.

Portrayed throughout the story:

Stacey didn’t want to see his best friend get lynched.

After RW and Melvin convinced him that they were friends they robbed Mr. Barnett’s store for a pearl-handled pistol.

T.J. would give his life for that pistol and eventually he did with his life. That is irony.

Lady Antebellem “One Day You Will”

You feel like youre falling backwardsLike youre slippin through the cracksLike no one would even noticeIf you left this town and never came back

You walk outside and all you see is rainYou look inside and all you feel is painAnd you cant see it now

But down the road the sun is shiningIn every cloud theres a silver liningJust keep holding on(Just keep holding on)

And every heartache makes you strongerBut it wont be much longerYoull find love, youll find peaceAnd the you youre meant to beI know right now thats not the way you feelBut one day you will

You wake up every morning and ask yourselfWhat am I doing here anywayWith the weight of all those disappointmentsWhispering in your ear

Lady Antebellum “One Day You Will” continuedYoure just barely hanging by a thread

You wanna scream but youre down to your last breathAnd you dont know it yet

But down the road the sun is shiningIn every cloud theres a silver liningJust keep holding on(Just keep holding on)

And every heartache makes you strongerBut it wont be much longerYoull find love, youll find peaceAnd the you youre meant to beI know right now thats not the way you feelBut one day you will

Find the strength to rise aboveYou willFind just what youre made of, youre made of

Down the road the sun is shiningIn every cloud theres a silver liningJust keep holding on(Just keep holding on)

And every heartache makes you strongerBut it wont be much longerYoull find love, youll find peaceAnd the you youre meant to beI know right now thats not the way you feelI know right now thats not the way you feelBut one day you willOne day you will, oh, one day you will

A big part of the story was Mr. Simms, his daughter Lillie Jean thinking she was better than Cassie. The midnight riders would tar and feather African Americans because they did not like them. The would do anything to embarrass them. They had really fancy cars. They would lynch anyone who got in their way.RW and Melvin were the main cause of TJ lynching.

Main cause of lynching

Whites did not like the African Americans or their ideas.

They thought the whites were better in every aspect of life.

The whites were jealous of the African American family unity.

Mr. Morrison made the whites look back when they broke Papa's leg.

Mr. Morrison broke RW and Melvin's leg and a guy whose name was not mentioned in the stories back.
