...of othersHope Over Heroin Program comes to Stafford County September 26-27Father Rooney and our Sistersattended a meeting this weekin Stafford with a group ofchurch leaders whoareconcernedover theepidemic of addictionthat has developed inourarea toheroinandprescriptions drugs.
Members of theStaffordPoliceandtheStafford County Com-monwealth Attorney'sOfficetestifiedthattheyencounter anywherefrom 10 to 20 cases ofheroin or opiate ad-diction each week inStaffordCounty alone. They acknowledgedthat theymake arrestsonly when they havetobecause they realizethat the community isnot doing enough inthe area of outreachandpreventiontohelpthose at risk—mostlythose in their teensand twenties—breakthe spiralof addiction.
It is thought to beeven more com-mon in Fredericksburgand Spotsylvania County.
Forthosewhohaveexperiencedaddiction to heroin, the recov-ery rate is only 10%. Recentarticles in the local newspa-per have periodically reporteddozens of deaths in only a fewweek'stimetoheroinoverdoses.
Those attending the meeting
from local churchesagreed thattheproblemisasmuchaspiritualproblemasasocietalproblem,andit isonlybecomingmoregrave.
Hope Over Heroinisanevent—amoderntakeonatentrevivalandBilly Graham Crusade—with
a concert stage and “kindnessevangelism.” It is anopen invi-tation toallwhoare trapped inaddiction (towhatever itmightbe) to come and encounter theloveofJesusandtheircommuni-ty.Theyareinvitedtofindhelpfromthemanyagencies,church-es,andhelpinggroupscalledthe“cityofresources”whichthelo-calcommunityprovidesandsur-roundstheeventinpop-uptents.
“Eventhoughaltarcalls, prayersof deliverance and on-the-spotbaptisms aren’t even found inour Catholic vocabulary,” saysFr. Don, “this is someplaceweneed tobe, weneed tofindwherewe fit in this solution ofcaring for those who are lost.
I’maskingallparishio-nerstoconsiderwherewe as a parish mightfitintothisevent:per-haps there are peoplewho have fought thisaddiction in theirown families, or whoare involved in someform of social serviceormedical careerwhomight become a partofthe“cityofresourc-es” proposed by theplanners of the event. No matter what wedecide, the CatholicChurch needs to takean active role in join-ing with the Christiancommunity, provid-ing spiritual care andbeing visibly pres-ent in this event.
“I have often wishedthat we, as a parishfamily, could reachout in a concrete waytothefamiliesofthosewhosufferfromaddic-tions.Thisisthetime.”
Anyone who would like to be involved in planning or working at this event is invited to please email Fr. Don at [email protected] before July 24. Fr. Don will contact you as soon as he returns from Africa.
"We need to find where we fit in this solution of
caring for those who are lost ...
I have often wished that we, as a parish family, could
reach out in a concrete way to the families of those who
suffer from addictions.
This is the time."
