Last weekend, in the Hong Kong district councils election, the pro-democracy candidates became the greatest losers. Since the early Eighties, the colonial government opened up greater opportunities for elections, most pro-democracy candidates who had demanded the government to improve lives of people usually received greater support by the electorates. This suggested that people in Hong Kong have respected and wished that the elected representatives would channelled the needs of the people and through expressed in various levels to the government, would be able to improve their lives.

Since Hong Kong returned to China, some political parties who supported government policies, emphasized that the Hong Kong policies need to be recognized by the government of China, would be seen as putting the benefits of Hong Kong people at a less significant position, and they are often labelled as pro-Chinese government. In compared to the pro-democracy parties, initially these political parties did not receive great support in the election. This suggests that people in Hong Kong have great emphasis on democracy.

However, many democracy proponents have been seen as unwilling to pay the cost to stand for one s ideal, and only have little achievements. Moreover, the conflicts between various pro-democracies parties, are seen as disunited with little consensus and without respectable leaders. In the past years, some pro-democracy politicians promoted violence and aggression to attract public s attention and support, however they have instead received antipathies from the public and have only achieved little. All these factors have resulted in these pro-democracy politicians attacking each other and rejected by the electorates.

In this district councils election, pro-government Democratic Alliance in Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) has become the biggest winner. While many well known Legislative Council members who belonged to pro-democracy parties, have been ousted from their seats. All pro-democracy parties lost support from the electorates. This result, of course does not representing that, people in Hong Kong have rejected democracy. Most believed that these pro-democracy parties are rejected because they could not even come to peace among themselves, and assist the government to build a better place for all the people in Hong Kong.

It is really sad to see that in only 20 to 30 years of time, pro-democracy parties as the symbol of the hope of democracy, have became a disappointment for the people of Hong Kong. I hope that for those politicians who are longing for democracy in Hong Kong, would learn from this failure, and change their attitude as well as methods in order to win back the respect and support of the

electorates.
