Last Saturday the Security Council of the United Nation

cleared a resolution to impose no-fly zone on Libya with a

view to halting Gaddafi's offensive against embattled rebel

forces in other Libya s cities. The resolution came after

Members deliberation on seeing Gaddafi s air strikes

against his own people and as such it has strengthened the

counter force against him.

Yet upon implementation, as when the United States,

France and Britain launched their missiles and fighter jets to

destroy Libya s air force and air defence system, civilians

are among the causalities; thus there is accusation against

the Western powers that they are no better off than the

Gaddafi s brutal means in achieving their ends. Although

the Western powers claim to intervene the internal politics

of Libya on the ground of humanism, their genuine intent

is challenged to be of self interest as they do not want

the Libya s situation turns out to impact adversely on oil

supply and economy of the world.

No matter how the launching of a war can be packaged

nicely, it is understandable that ultimately it must be for the

benefit of a concerned party. Whether a war can be averted

will hinge on whether all the stakeholders can come up with

a peaceful means to resolve the issue. In Libya s case,

Gaddafi s ways and attitudes in tackling revolt have sealed

the fate of his country.

The Information Age is changing the society beyond our

comprehension. We could hardly imagine how far the

Internet can bring upon such an impact. Social network has

only been around for a few years but has transformed the

worldview and lifestyle of the whole younger generation.

Libya s circumstance indicates the big gap between

the old-fashioned governing power and the prevailing

information society, as seen in the misuse of traditional

high-handed suppression on wide-spread demand and

uprising from the people.
