In this weekend, people in Hong Kong will remember a fighter for

democracy, Mr Szeto Wah.

Szeto Wah was a lifelong educator. Starting from 1973, he

participated in the campaign to give teachers reasonable reward,

which had later become the fundamental move in building up the

education system in Hong Kong. And he had founded the largest

worker union in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Professional Teachers’

Union. After 1984, he was appointed as one of the members for

drafting the Basic Laws of Hong Kong, and he had resigned from

this position as a protest after the June 4 incident. He had

persistently asked for the Chinese government to apologize for

the June 4 incident. And finally he had formed the first

Democratic Party in Hong Kong and became a member of the

Legislative Council until his retirement.

In the 1980s when I was studying in the Baptist Bible Seminary in

Hong Kong, I had once attended lectures given by Mr Szeto on

his efforts to fight for democracy and social justice. I could feel his

strong love to China and his aim to fight for social justice at that

time. However, it was the persistency and perseverance he had

that I appreciated the most. Until his death, he had stood firm in

his faith through his action.

I already knew he was a Christian but not those who only spoke

about religion or regular church-goer at that time. But in his life, he

had demonstrated what the scripture said as: “To act justly and to

love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”. He had

demonstrated the mission of a Christian to the world.

After he was diagnosed with cancer, there had been lots of

discussion about his faith. He had emphasized that he had

became a Christian not because of his desire to go to heaven.

Some had doubted whether he had any believe in the existence

of heaven or even whether he was a real Christian. However, I

thought Mr Szeto had shown us the core value of the Christian

faith as reconciliation of man and God, rather than receiving

benefits from God. Mr Szeto emphasized that “Kingdom and

Justice of God are the most important things he had pursued”.

It was announced that the Lord’s Prayer will be sung in his

memorial service in this weekend. Let us all say goodbye to Mr

Szeto with his most favoured bible verse “Thy Kingdom come, thy

will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
