We polled a few of our students and faculty members about what “Keeping
it Real” means to them. Here’s what they had to say:
“To be honest with yourself and who you are.”
“Being faithful and being truthful with yourself and your peers.”
“Having faith in God and being real with yourself and others around you.”
“Being who you are and not trying to be something you’re not.”
“Being who God has called you to be.”

5th & 6th Grade Scientists in Action!
Engaged! Exploring! Explaining!
Evaluating! These are the actions you
will find taking place in the fifth and
sixth grade science classroom this year.
The new 21st century curriculum
teaches higher-order thinking skills and
offers a hands-on approach to
learning.
During their first science lab, our fifth
grade students explored how scient ists
collect and interpret data using
thermometers. Our students were
asked to determine why scient ists use
thermometers to test the temperature
of the water instead of relying on their
sense of touch. The fifth graders came
to the conclusion that a thermometer
provides a more objective answer in
the form of degrees, rather than relying
on the subjective feeling of simply
touching the water.
In learning how scient ists classify
organisms, the sixth graders classified a
set of seeds by sort ing them into groups
based on shared characterist ics – size,
color, and shape. The students
discovered that scient ists use this same
method to classify organisms.
These labs provide the students with a
practical visual experience that brings
the text to life.
Sixth grade students working together to classify seeds based on shared characteristics.
We invite you and your family to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides
families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read everyday, so they can
lead better lives.
Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make
plans to visit our Book Fair.
We will be open Tuesday through Friday, before school starting at 7:00 a.m. and after school until 4:30 p.m. On
Wednesday, we will have extended hours until 7:00 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Darien loves that he
can log into his
e-books and take
notes on the pages.
It's a great tool,
especially for
studying. The
Microsoft OneNote
App helps him stay
organized.
"I really like it

that Office is on there
is great.”
For Bradley, who
prefers e-books,
having the iPad is
great. He can carry
all of his books in one
convenient location.
What he likes most is
that he can take
notes a lot faster and
keep up in class.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
“My passion, my heart, is that they walk away from
here loving God.”
Miss Cathy Cryer
This month’s faculty spotlight honoree is Miss Cathy
Cryer! The Lord called her to teach at DCS 30 years
ago, and she has faithfully served our families ever since. Miss Cryer plays an invaluable role in the lives
of her students. Her passion for science is undeniable
and the impact she has made is immeasurable. Get to know a little more about this dedicated teacher.
Q1: What classes and grade levels do you teach? A: I teach 7t h grade life science, 8t h grade Earth
science and 12t h grade marine biology.
Q2: What do you love about Dade Christian School? A: It’s my family. It’s my 30t h year here, so this has
become my family. I can freely teach about God
and creation. I can present the plan of salvation to my students to start the year off with. I can go to
anybody for help, if I need help. I can stop and pray
with somebody anytime I want. I can incorporate
God’s word in every lesson I do. It’s endless what I love about Dade Christian.
Q3: How do you try to provide a unique learning experience in your classroom? A: I am a total hands-on girl. I think if they can feel it,
touch it, see it, do it, they’re going to get it. My goal
through these animals is for the students to learn to be gentle and kind and caring with a pet. The goal is
that they will treat humans the same way. The
marine biology [students] do fish tanks, we get them scuba certified and we do all kinds of little labs within
the day, within the week, within the month -- just
something that they can touch and feel.
Q4: What kind of impact do you wish to have on your
students? A: #1 to… ah, I’ll probably cry… my passion, my heart, is that they walk away from here loving God
and that they know if they put Him first in their life,
their life will come together. There’ll be hard times,
but He’ll help them through that . That salvation will be there; that they’re a true believer. Like this year’s
theme is “Keep It Real.” That these kids will come
back and say, “You know Miss Cryer, if anything you taught me that you were real. You let us know what
you were going through, you let us know how God
helped you, and you were transparent with us.”
Q5: Anything else you would like to share? A: I don’t know. Anything else you want to know
about me? I scuba dive, I snorkel, I love riding roller coasters, I’ve been nominated twice for teacher of
the year, and I love my family.

Go. See. Serve. A mission trip: one phrase that could mean so many different
things. Most people who hear the phrase mission trip think of a group of
people sent out to provide food and water for the poor in other parts of the
world. This summer, I went on my second mission trip. Last year I went to
Argentina, but this year I had the opportunity to go to Paraguay. The church I
attend, International Bible Baptist or better known as I.B.B., is a mission-
oriented church. That means my church supports missionaries that have been
sent from our church to other parts of the country to spread the word of God.
When we have a mission trip there are normally three teams of about 10-15
students with two adult leaders who are sent to three different countries
containing a missionary we support at church. Each year there is a different set
of countries selected to visit. This year the countries were London, Paraguay, and Peru.
One thing that separates I.B.B. mission trips
from other mission trips is what we actually do on the
trips. We mainly visit under-developed countries, not
all the time, and are there for around 2 ½ weeks. Two
days before we actually leave to our designated
country, we are taught a series of mime dramas that
represent hope for the people. Everyone has a part, this
year I performed as a demon, an accuser, someone who
tempts with money, and a clown. We do dramas
because people can relate to certain roles and because
most of the time there is a language barrier.
When the team and I arrived in Paraguay we
stayed at an orphanage in Asunción run by a missionary and his wife. We were only there for a day and
spent the majority of the two weeks in Ciudad del Este with another missionary named Clint. While on
these trips where we stay is sometimes a guessing game, but luckily we got to stay in the basement of the
church, which meant we didn’t have to keep searching for a location every
night. Everyday started early and ended late because Clint was able to get
us into schools to perform our dramas. By the end of the trip, we had
probably performed for over 4,000 people and did over 100 dramas. Even
though we all work hard during the year to raise the money for these trips
just to perform dramas people may not be watching, it’s worth it because
there might be that one person who’s paying attention and that can make all
the difference. Mission trips have changed my perspective on many things
and they taught me to be grateful for what I have, be all that God has made
me to be, and how to grow closer with others on the same walk of faith.

SECONDARY REMINDERS!
For more information, please contact the Secondary Office at 305-827-8722.
Just before the first day of school, our seniors set off for Camp Sparta,
north of Lake Placid. Senior Camp is a time for the soon-to-be
graduates to come together and bond spiritually and socially with
one another. The students were divided into teams and participated
in various games and activities, including walking a tightrope
suspended high amongst the trees! Each game required the
students to rely on and encourage one another, further establishing
their relationships. This year, the senior class chose ohana, meaning
family, as their class motto. A special thank you to our guest speaker,
Pastor Ron Wallace, and to our incredible chaperones: Mr. Adams,
Miss Cryer, Mr. DeCoro, Mr. Farmer, Mrs. Galindo, Mr. Leger and Mrs.
Platon. We hope the graduating class of 2015 will look back on their
camp experience and remember fondly the weekend they shared
together.

Check out what’s new this fall! We are so blessed about all that God is doing and the many exciting things going on here at New Testament Baptist Church. From the very beginning, our church has always been about helping people strengthen their relationship with God, getting them to meet some really great people, and finding their place in church. We believe the improvements we are making will give us more opportunities to continue to accomplish this and so much more. Take a look at what’s coming up.

SECONDARY CHAPEL The theme for High School Chapel this year is “Keeping it Real .” Through a variety
of series, we will explore what it really means to keep it real, and teach the
students how to keep it real for Christ. For the month of September, we will discuss
image with a series entitled DeathtoSelfie. Pastor F. opened this series with a
powerful message and the key verse, Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in His
own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created
them.”
This year, we are challenging our students to become servant leaders. The theme
for the month of September is “service.” In our last chapel, Pastor Adam Martinez
delivered a great message. One of the key verses was John 13:14 -15: "If I then, the
Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet , you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” The
students were challenged to seek opportunities to serve.
YOU’RE INVITED!
Join us on Thursday, September 11 at 8:10 a.m. for a special Patriot’s Day Chapel in remembrance of 9/11. During this time, we will honor our DCS parents, relatives and friends who serve as Fire Fighters, Police Officers, Paramedics/Fire Rescue and members of the Armed Forces by publicly recognizing them as they serve our great nation and bring strength, care and hope to so many in their time of need.
