RECONSTRUCTING A PEOPLE AFTER SIN RECONSTRUCTING A PEOPLE AFTER SIN RECONSTRUCTING A PEOPLE AFTER SIN RECONSTRUCTING A PEOPLE AFTER SIN

Our Torah portion begins with the words “vayakhel Moshe” - Moshe gathered the people together. We often rush to explain the purpose for which Moshe gathered them, the building of the mishkan. We speak about the first regulation in the building process, the requirement NOT to work on Shabbat. We rarely turn back one page and consider the context in which the gathering took place. The very last verse of parshat Ki Tisa reads, “The Israelites would see how radiant the skin of Moshe’s face was. Moshe would then put the veil back over his face, until he went in to speak with [God].”

After the sin of the Golden Calf, the Jewish people felt degraded. They were laid low by their own sin. The Torah describes them as broken-loose or out-of-control (32:25). They fell into a state of collective despair. The people saw Moshe as wholly diRerent and apart from themselves, to the extent that Moshe would wear a mask preventing them from seeing his face.

Moshe gathers them together to confront this distance, between where they are and where they ought to be. The building of the mishkan acts to give them purpose and standing in their own eyes, as well as in God’s eyes. Gathering for a mission is the only response to disorderly social despair.

Communal life provides similar structures for the good work that we do together that we cannot do alone. While we rejoice in the freedom that individualism allows, we fail to recognize the price we pay in the empty feeing that comes from an absence of life purpose. In modern times, our politics and our personal lives often inhabit the space between these two Torah potions. It is left to each of us to choose the gatherings, in which we can create structures of ultimate meaning.
