ASBI Remembers An Occasional Series

Faye Braude Lasine, whose yahrzeit is 10 Adar, was one of the early stalwarts of the Lakeview Branch of Congregation Anshe Sholom, the longtime President of our Sisterhood, and a proud and worthy grandchild of our Congregation’s first prominent Rabbi, Abraham Samuel Braude. DR. RIVKA PRESS SCHWARTZ

Join us at ASBI for a Scholar-in-Residence Shabbat with Dr. Rivka Press Schwartz, February 15 - 16.

Friday Night Join us for a Shabbat dinner at shul at 6:45 PM, then stay for an oneg at 7:30 PM with a talk by Dr. Rivka Press Schwartz. All are welcome at

the oneg even if you can’t attend dinner!

"Money, Materialism and Modern Orthodoxy" Modern Orthodox Jews consistently identify "the tuition crisis" as the biggest issue

facing our community, but day school tuition is only one piece of a larger story about how we earn and spend money and the values we hold and transmit around material

success. This talk will examine some of the "hidden curriculum" around our community's assessments of its needs and what it takes to provide for them.

Shabbat Morning Drasha "How Modern Orthodox Jews Engage as Citizens"

Jews in America are more secure, prosperous, and free than Jews at any point in the Diaspora (even accounting for recent concerns about rising antisemitism on the right and the left.) We are given the opportunity to participate fully as American citizens.

What choices do we, as individuals and as a community, make about how we engage as American citizens? What forces, within our community and in broader American

society, help shape those choices? And are they the right ones?

Post-Kiddush Shiur, 12:30 PM "Having It All: Modern Orthodox Families and the Juggling Act"

Modern Orthodox families feel squeezed on all sides—by the demands of contemporary work, financial pressures, and family life, and by the religious and

communal demands of Jewish life. This talk will analyze some of the underlying forces that got us here, and will offer some concrete and practical suggestions for

successfully managing the juggling act. Babysitting will be extended to 1:30 PM.

Dr. Rivka Press Schwartz has spent almost twenty years in the field of Jewish secondary education. She currently serves as the Associate Principal, General Studies, at SAR High School in the Riverdale community of New York City, and as a research fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America.

Dr. Schwartz earned her B.A. in physics and history of science at Case Western Reserve University. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University, writing her dissertation about

the cultural history of the Manhattan Project. In addition to teaching high school, she has served as an adjunct professor of history at Yeshiva and Stern Colleges. She writes and speaks widely on issues of contemporary importance in the American Jewish community.

Dr. Schwartz lives in Washington Heights, NYC, with her husband, Rabbi Ezra Schwartz, and their five children.

Dinner is by reservation only. Register at asbi.org by February 11.

Price: $20 Members | $26 Non-Members Members: Log into your account to redeem your discount.

Florence Heller JCC Scholarship for ASBI Members We are excited to announce that there is new dedicated funding for need-based

scholarship assistance to support Anshe Sholom families registering for Florence Heller JCC Preschool and Child Care. A generous funding partner is marrying philanthropic

dollars with JCC scholarship awards for the greatest benefit for our ASBI families. The following is the process to be considered for scholarship assistance:

Step 1: Register for the program for which you are requesting financial assistance (a requirement to be considered for support).

Step 2: You will receive a confirmation email from one of the JCC's financial assistance team members with a link to apply through FAST (JCC Chicago’s third party fee assistance administrator).

Step 3: As you fill out the application, please select Florence Heller JCC/Anshe Sholom as the location. Once your FAST application is complete, please make sure to upload your most recent tax documents including the following: Federal tax return, State tax return, W2 for each working parent (1099 if self-employed), and two most recent paycheck stubs for each working parent.

Step 4: FAST applications are processed in 7 - 10 business days once all documents are uploaded; you will receive a confirmation email from one of the JCC's fee assistance team members confirming when your application will be reviewed. During this time, for those already participating in the program, please make your normally scheduled payments until you have been contacted about your financial assistance status.

Step 5: Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email letter from a financial assistance team member with a notification of your application status and a revised payment plan as applicable. Scholarship awards are applied to accounts immediately. In order to qualify for financial assistance, you must be an Anshe Sholom member in good standing at the time of application and for the year for which you are seeking the financial assistance. "Intellectual History of Religious Zionism" a Lunchtime Series with Rabbi Wolkenfeld

at the Chicago Loop Synagogue (16 South Clark Street)

Seventy years after the establishment of the State of Israel, support for Israel is a core component of the worldview of many religious Jews. It is part and parcel of the way that we understand Judaism itself. Yet Zionism, as an ideology, has been and remains controversial among Jewish communities with a competing allegiance to the primacy of Torah and Mitzvot. This class will explore the history of religious Zionism and its potential for the future.

Part III: February 14, 12:00 PM "Messianic Religious Zionism and Its Alternatives"

Cost is $15 for lunches by The Sandwich Club. To RSVP for this course, contact the Chicago Loop Synagogue office at 312-346-7370 or [email protected].
