Introduction to Jewish Life & Practice This Monday, March 25, 8:00 PM, at ASBI

Join Rabbi Wolkenfeld for this ongoing class on the fundamentals of Jewish life and practice, for those interested in conversion to Judaism and open to all in the community. New participants are always welcome!

Daf Yomi at ASBI Participants from all backgrounds and levels of experience are welcome and encouraged to join us each weekday morning following Shacharit for the synchronized and coordinated study of Talmud, based on a 1923 standardized calendar in which the entire Talmud is studied and completed, one double-sided page each day, by Jews around the world, every 7.5 years.

Tractate Bechorot begins on April 19. It’s a great time to join in!

BEIT MIDRASH WEDNESDAYS Join us Wednesday nights at ASBI for a series of accessible and thought-provoking shiurim. We’re excited to welcome several wonderful guest

teachers for our current series, “Redemption in Tanakh”.

March 27, 8:00 PM - with Dr. Devorah Schoenfeld “Redemption as a Love Story: Approaches to the Song of Songs”

Medieval Jewish commentaries on the Song of Songs read it as a love story between God and Israel, or between God and the individual soul. In this class we will look at three different commentaries and the different ways they find

redemption in this story.

April 3, 8:00 PM - with Dr. Rebecca Schorsch “Rachel as a Model of Redemption”

Our class will explore redemption as imagined in some astonishing midrashic and liturgical readings of Rachel. Some of the questions we will consider are what does redemption look like when imagined as Rachel? Biblically, what

prompts this portrait? And how might contemporary feminist theology help us understand the significance of this gendered depiction?

Israel Movie Night “Yentl” (1983)

Monday, April 8, 7:45 PM, 133 minutes

“Yentl” is Barbra Streisand’s directorial debut. Adapted from the short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer, “Yentl” is the story of a young Jewish woman who disguises herself as a boy in order to receive an education. Once she is

studying among the Orthodox Jewish rabbis, she falls in love with another student. Her situation is further complicated when a woman falls in love her.

With the help of Michel Legrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman (who won

Academy Awards for their score), Streisand turned Singer's simple story into a full-blown musical, complete with 12 songs.

Sponsored by the Israel Committee. Pizza, pop, popcorn & chips will be served.
