BEYOND TIME

THE WORLD OF NIKE

Nike’s vibrant urban style has an afnity with that of Seoul’s hippest residents, so it’s easy to see why the opening of a new Nike store in the Gangnam district has been met with such delight. The store is the largest of its kind in South Korea and show-cases the latest oferings from Nike’s running and football collections, among others, along with the complete women’s training range. The store is dominated by a 24-foot chandelier made out of Nike products, a tribute to the brand’s innova-tive history, which has kept it at the forefront of sneaker design for over 40 years. irs

CHIC WITH ATTITUDE

There is a decidedly elegant tone this season at Givenchy, with Riccardo Tisci presenting a more ladylike collection than we have come to expect from a designer who has favoured a more casual and punchy aesthetic for the past few sea-sons. His grown-up departure most certainly does not disappoint, however; delicate, fowing fabrics printed with bold nature-inspired motifs are expertly tailored into ftted feminine dresses, emblazoned with blown-out butterfy wings, or patterned with vintage-style forals. Visit Given-chy’s recently opened Gangnam store to browse a collection that manages to be at once lovely and edgy. hl

TRUE BLUE

The Serpenti collection from Italian brand Bulgari has reached the kind of iconic sta-tus that few lines ever achieve, and the bags and accessories are a favourite among everyone from fashion editors to Hol-lywood actresses. Fashion brand Hupot, which stands for Hu-

man Potential, was founded in 2008 by Korean

designers Do and YK. Ofering both menswear

and womenswear, all made in Seoul, the label has

gained a cult following for its decidedly urban

aesthetics and distinctive prints. The new au-

tumn/winter collection, named Swamp, features

streetwear separates such as minis, sweaters and

tracksuit bottoms, as well as an extensive selec-

WINTER WEAR

The Italian label behind some of the best coats

ever to grace a catwalk, Max Mara once again

meets expectations this season. All styles, from

her eponymous jewellery brand

to great acclaim in 2005 and

her designs, which incorporate

Fast-forward to 2014 and possibly the only chance you’ll get of seeing hanbok will be if you stumble across the National Folk Museum of Korea. Nowa-days, you’re more likely to encounter a version of Lady Gaga than a traditionally costumed

generation of young Koreans has begun to es-

tablish its own style identity. After years of con-

formity, Koreans are expressing their individu-

ality with a passion – whether that’s in fashion,

music or art. It’s like a creative volcano, a surge

of energy comparable to the similar shifts that

took place in Japan and Hong Kong. Seoul has

Korea is quietly making its mark on the

fashion industry, too. While the international

fashion elite may not routinely make it to Seoul

Fashion Week, others have taken note. Not only

does it feature some of the established names

who are taking on the international fashion

establishment; it also promotes local up-and-

coming talents through its Generation Next

catwalk show.

What makes Korean designers so exciting

is the avant-garde aesthetic that is reminiscent

of the infuential vision of the Antwerp Six or

the emerging Japanese scene in the 1980s. At the

autumn/winter 2014/15 London Fashion Week,

Korean-born designers Eudon Choi, Jackie JS

Lee, Hwan Heo, Rejina Pyo and Hyein Seo were

all worthy of note, with Seo going on to win the

International Fashion Showcase award for best

designer. Meanwhile Korean stars such as design

duo SteveJ & YoniP (who frst showed at London

Fashion Week in 2007) are wowing London and

New York with their designs – all cutting-edge

and focused on innovation.

As for the more established designers, Jain

Song – who shows at Seoul Fashion Week – is

known for her sharp, clean looks. Song worked

with her mother, the designer Kim Dong Soon,

before launching her own collection in 2004,

Kye, whose accessories are also stocked in New

York and London.

Seoul’s striking architectural landscape no

doubt provides plenty of inspiration to the city’s

creative and innovative dressers; Zaha Hadid

designed the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Prada

collaborated with Rem Koolhaas’s OMA on the

creation of its Prada Transformer pavilion in

2009, and there are a seemingly endless number

of eye-catching boutiques from both interna-

tional titans and new designers.

Among those shops, catering to the deep

yearning for individuality, are places such as

Boon the Shop – where pieces by Maison Mar-

tin Margiela, Gareth Pugh and Vionnet are dis-

played like art. As well as the luxury-label-flled

department stores (Lotte, Galleria and Hyundai

Department Store), there’s a strong presence

from the world’s haute conceptualists; Rick

Owens, Comme des Garçons, Ann Demeule-

meester, Phillip Lim and 10 Corso Como all

have a presence in Seoul. The big guns – Gucci,

Prada, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuit-

Street style is undeniably driving fashion

in a new way. Seoul’s fashion week is particu-

larly diverting for street-style photographers,

who snap Korean girls subverting classic looks,

teaming socks with heels and working Korean

brands such as 8seconds, Spao, Coming Step,

Canezou and Low Classic with vintage pieces

and high-street brands such as Zara, H&M and

Topshop. The reason Seoul is so edgy and so

refreshingly diferent from the fashion weeks of

London, New York and Paris is because Korean

style leaders also ignore all the fashion rules –

clashing colour and renegade print rules here.

Little wonder, then, that Lady Gaga recently

played at Seoul’s Summer Music Festival and

has enlisted the help of cult South Korean girl

band Crayon Pop (whose style is as bright as

the name suggests) to support her latest tours.

ソウルの型破りなストリートスタイルは、地元出身デ

ザイナーがファッションに対してとっている前衛的ア

プローチとマッチしている。フランシス・ワセムがレポ

信じがたいことだが、ほんの40年足らず前はまだ、

韓国の首都ソウルで民族衣装がよく見られたとい

う。時代は移って2014年、チマチョゴリを見る機会

は、おそらく韓国国立民俗博物館にでも行かない限

りない。今は伝統服よりレディー・ガガ風の装いをし

た人を見かけることの方が多いのだ。ソウルはここ数

年で、独自のスタイル精神を見い出してきた。「ユニ

クロのTシャツにデザイナージャケットを羽織り、フェ

ンディのバッグを提げるのが今風」と、韓国生まれの

デザイナー、パク・チュンムはいう。

首都ソウルは革命的な変化を遂げてきた。文化

やビジネス、そして人口までもが激変しているのだ。

英語圏のカナダ、イギリス、アメリカから大勢の人が

主に英語教師としてソウルに流入していることも背景

にあり、人口が約1050万人に膨れ上がった一因とな

っている。それと同時に、韓国の新世代の若者が自

分たち独自のスタイルアイデンティティを確立し始め

た。長年「右へ倣え」式だった韓国人だが、今はファ

ッションにしろ音楽にしろアートにしろ、個性の表現

に情熱を注いでいる。ソウルはまるで創造性の噴火

口のようで、日本や香港で同様の変化が起きた時に

匹敵するエネルギーの高まりが感じられる。ニュー

ヨーク・タイムズ紙が「ニュー・トウキョウ」と名付け

たくらいだ。

韓国はファッション業界でも静かな注目を集め

ている。ソウル・ファッションウィークは、さすがに

国際ファッションエリートが常連とはまだ言えないも

韓国のデザイナーをこんなにもエキサイティング

にしているのは、強い影響力をもっていたアントワー

プ・シックスのビジョンや1980年代に台頭した日本

のファッションシーンを思い起こさせるアバンギャル

ドな美学だ。2014/15年秋冬ロンドン・ファッション

ウィークでは、韓国出身デザイナーのユードン・チョ

イ、ジャッキー・JS・リー、ファン・ホ、レジーナ・ピョ

ウ、ヒョン・ソが揃って注目に値するコレクションを

披露し、ソはさらに「インターナショナル・ファッショ

ン・ショーケース・アワード」のベストデザイナー賞を

受賞。一方で、スティーブ・ジェイ&ヨニピ(2007年

のロンドン・ファッションウィークで初めて作品を披

露したデザインドュオ)など韓国のスターデザイナー

がロンドンとニューヨークを席巻している。いずれも

革新を旨とした最先端のデザインだ。

さらに有名どころでは、ソン・ザイン(ソウル・フ

ァッションウィークで披露)がシャープですっきりし

たルックスで知られる。ソンは母親のデザイナー、キ

ム・ドンスンの下で仕事していたが、2004年に自身

のコレクションを発表。以来、カルト・コンセプトスト

アの10コルソコモとコラボレーションしている。もう一

人知っておくべき名前はキー(Kye)。セントラル・セ

ント・マーチンズ出身のキャスリン・カイによるレーベ
