larding College

proudly presents

he famous ...

Belles&Beau~ The Harding College Belles and Beaux, a musical perform

ing group, has enjoyed a seven-year history of performances

extending to United States Army base:> overseas and at home

and including programs in the immediate A!·kansas area and

southern states. Overseas tours are awarded through

petitive auditions by the National Music Council.

Dr. Kenneth Davis, Jr., director, organized the group in

1959 to travel for the USO and entertain at various bases. The

members are selcted from the 75-member A Cappella Chorus at

the school. All are full-time students. (continued under fold in)

In their first year of existence the singers were awarded a

two week tour of the Fifth Army in the Mid-Central States. In

1960, a year later, they won another tour , th'!s time to the Far

East. They spent five weeks touring and presenting programs

at bases in Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Nine weeks in Europe followed in 1062, extending to Ger

many, France, Austria, Italy and Switzel'land. In 1964 the group

spent four weeks island-hopping in the Caribbean, including stops

in Panama, Puerto Rico, Cuba, San Salvadm and others.

Between tours the singers keep busy, pre.senting a showcase

a semester at the school, entertaining local civic groups and

making weekend trips in behalf of the school. This spring will

take them to Hunstville, Ala.; New Orleans and Shreveport, La.;

Houston, Tex.; Flint, Mich.; Miami, Fla.; West Monroe, La.; Pine

Bluff and Booneville, Ark.

The group never appears twice on the stage in the same

costume during a program. The elaborate array of attire, in

cluding red and white dinner jackets, gay vests, cowboy suits,

stately formals, frontier dresses and novelty costumes, is largely

designed and assembled by Dr. Davis' wife, Betty.

Continuously working on repertoire additions, the singers

assemble three times a week for rehearsal. They spend many

hours practicing every detail to produce a fast-moving showcase

of fine entertainment.

On stage • . before the glaring lights of the television studio or touring the nation, the Belles and Beaux always provide pleasing entertainment.
