It is reported in a venerable hadith, One who does not have something from the Quran inside [his

heart] is akin to a ruined house.

The greatest miracle of the Prophet (SAW) is the Holy Quran. The sheer size of the historical accounts, written

documents, as well as the spoken words over the course of fourteen centuries makes it clear that The Holy

Quran is the preeminent miracle of all time. Its literary beauty, unparalleled eloquence, semantic flow withinimitable style, melodious verses and their matchless consistency, wealth of instructions and wisdom, its good

tidings, assurances, and forewarnings, its appeal and influence, its true account of the history of the earlie

nations and the life stories of the Prophets, its moral and judicial commandments, social and politicainjunctions, its unique style of imparting guidance and education for mankind, as well as countless other merits

of the Holy Quran are all sufficient reasons for every Muslim to learn how to read it in its revealed languageFor those who never had the opportunity to learn how to read Arabic, this humble work may provide inspirationfor remedial effort in this regard.

NOTES ON TRANSLITERATIONArabic transliteration has been a controversial subject since 1926. It has been a problem without a perfect

solution, though this has not stopped some people from trying. The two basic approaches are: Phonetic tryingto approximate the sound of the spoken word, the other tries to represent the letters of the written word in

Arabic. Both work to a degree.

The great debate over how to render words seems to never end. It is an exciting add-on for some; for those arebetter at Arabic it can actually be an interesting bit of human interest. The resolution sometimes turns out

blaming Arabic for being so difficult, what, with all its grammar and peculiar sounds and stops. How

fascinating!

The ideal solution would be to have a standard, internationally agreed, system. Several have been proposed butunfortunately none has been universally accepted. Probably the earliest attempt at standardization was the

German proposal adopted by the International Convention of Orientalist Scholars in 1936. It is the system used

in the Hans Wehr Arabic dictionary. Another standard was agreed in 1971 at a conference of Arab experts in

Beirut and - theoretically, at least, accepted by the countries of the Arab League. It has met some resistance,particularly in those Arab countries where French predominates over English.

Young people going to school in the United States, the United Kingdom or the Western hemisphere, do not

have the luxury of learning Arabic as a formal language. It is for them we have used this transliteration.

and a barrier behind them,

then We have blind-folded

nothing but humans like us,

and the All-beneficent has notsent down anything,

49. They do not await but a

single cry

that would seize them as they

wrangle.

tawsiyatan

50. Then they will not be able

to make any will,

nor will they return to theirfolks.

bal antum qawmun

musrifoona

19. They said, 'Your bad

omens attend you.

What!Ifyou are admonished

....

Rather you are a profligatelot.'

'Spend out of what Allah has

provided you,

'the faithless say to the

faithful,

'Shall we feed [someone]

whom Allah would have fed,

had He wished?

You are only in manifest

error.'

41. A sign for them is that We

carried their progeny

in the laden ship,

42.Wakhalaqna lahum min-

mithlihi

ma yarkaboona

42. and We have created for

them what is similar to it,

which they ride.

down on his people

a host from the sky,

nor We would have sent down.

fa-itha hum khamidoona

29.It was but a single cry,

and, behold, they were stilled

[like burnt ashes]!

38. And the sun runs on

to its place of rest

That is the ordaining of the

All-mighty, the All-knowing.

manazila

hatta AAada kaalAAurjooni

-alqadeemi

39. As for the moon, We have

ordained its phases,

until it becomes like an old

palm leaf.

36.Subhana allatheekhalaqa-

al-azwaja kullaha

mimma tunbitu al-ardu

wamin anfusihim

wamimma la yaAAlamoona

36.Immaculate is He who has

created all the kinds

of what the earth grows,

and of themselves,

and of what they do not know.

37.Waayatun lahumu allaylu

naslakhu minhu alnnahara

fa-itha hum muthlimoona

37. And a sign for them is the

night,

from which We strip the day,

and, behold, they find

themselves in the dark.

30.Ya hasratan AAala

alAAibadi

ma ya/teehim min rasoolin

illa kanoo bihi yastahzi-oona

30. How regrettable of the

servants!

There did not come to them

any apostle

but that they used to deride

him.

31.Alam yaraw

kam ahlakna qablahum mina-

alqurooni

annahum ilayhim la-

yarjiAAoona

31. Have they not regarded

how many generations We

have destroyed before them

who do not come back to

them?

32.Wa-in kullun lamma-

jameeAAun ladayna

muhdaroona

32.And all of them will indeed

be presented

before Us.

33.Waayatun lahumu al-ardu-

almaytatu

ahyaynaha

waakhrajna minha habban

faminhu ya kuloona

33. A sign for them is the

dead earth,

which We revive

and out of it bring forth grain,

so they eat of it.

jannatin- min nakheelin

waaAAnabin

wafajjarna feeha mina-

alAAuyooni

34. And We make in it

orchards of date palms

and vines,

and We cause springs to gush

forth in it,

35.Liya/kuloo min thamarihi

wama AAamilat-hu aydeehim

afala yashkuroona

35. so that they may eat of its

fruit

and what their hands have

cultivated.

Will they not then give

thanks?
