Speed...fast speed is described in all adjective forms; horsepower,

design, velocity, wind resistance, etc. Try fourteen. Yes, speed comes in the descriptive form of a fourteen year old young man named Draik Beauchamp. But not just speed...he now has that thing called fast speed. That’s what separates the champions from the other riders. It involves the desire to win without fear of crashing and pushing the envelope limits of the motorcycle. Well, he’s there and looking to move his racing career to the next level, and soon. Others are beginning to take notice and some of those are sponsors.

Draik began his motorcycle riding at the age of four. His dad, Kurt bought a Honda F1 and Draik wanted one too. Kurt bought a pocket bike, put training wheels on it at fi rst and the rest...is history as he began racing at the age of fi ve. His major racing career began on a 125 but today, he’s aboard a Kawasaki Ninja 250. APEX, Sport Track, Lionheart Moto, US129 Photos, Sportbike 4Hire and WCW are just a few of his sponsors who have noticed him and know he’s something special.

Sitting down with the fourteen year old, it was apparent that he is older than his actual years. His dad let me know that Draik is his own fundraising director, his own accountant (he takes care of the books), his own marketing director (getting sponsors) and his own CEO, COO and CFO. Draik takes care of his career personally. And get this, at fourteen he can tear down his bike to nuts and bolts and put it back

together. “I want to be able to know what the bike is doing and possibly how to fi x it. But especially, how can I make it grip better and go faster; faster than anyone else in the race.”

He races against men in his division, not just his age group. And he wins. His biggest win he said came at Road Atlanta during Cycle Jam 2013. “Everything clicked. I had great starts and the bike never wavered the entire day. No slips, no mistakes and I could feel I was really fast. At the end of the day, I won Road Atlanta, my fi rst 250 Sportbike race championship.” That win is included in his 20 podiums in 2013.

He’s learning more every day and getting better. He’s already purchased a SV650 in preparation for his 2015 racing season. “I’m a hard working, 8th grade homeschooled student... I love church, especially serving in the student ministry... I really enjoy shooting and maintaining my guns, being outdoors, riding/training on my bicycle and spending time with family”, said Draik.

He regularly attends AMA Champion Racer, Jason DiSalvo’s race camp where he has caught Jason’s eye. That’s why he also sponsors him. And who is one of Jason DiSalvo’s main sponsor on his race bike...APEX, of course. Draik raises his money to go racing with t-shirt sales (he makes his own), bike/car washes, etc. He depends on these funds in order to get to the tracks and race. With times changing, so has Harley-Davidson®. They have switched

gears and entered the younger rider market by unveiling a first all-new platform motorcycle developed by the company in some thirteen years; the Street 750 and the Street 500. They are designed for urban environments and Harley-Davidson® intends to attract new younger riders with these dark customs. “These are the newest motorcycles to join our Dark Custom lineup, which helped make us the number-one selling brand to young adults in the U.S. for the past five years,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer, Harley-Davidson® Motor Company. “Both the Street 750 and Street 500 were designed with thousands of hours of input from young adults in cities around the world...They are proof that being customer-led continues to be a core driver of our product development process.”

The motorcycle will be centered around Harley’s new liquid-cooled Revolution X engine. They might be smaller in cubic inches compared to Harley’s top of the line 103, but rest assured, the thousands of hours put into the design of every inch of the motorcycle screams Harley-Davidson®. A new chassis will house the Revolution X power train with new

suspension, nice, broad handlebars and a seat height of just 25 inches.

The Street 750 will be powered by a 749cc liquid-cooled 60-degree, 8-valve, V-Twin engine with a 2 into 1 right side exhaust and a belt driven, 6-speed tranny. The Street 500 will be powered by a 494cc liquid-cooled 60-degree, 8-valve, V-Twin engine. And somehow, the engineers have found a way so that once you start these motorcycles up, you’ll know they are truly from Harley-Davidson® DNA. Both motorcycles are built bare to the bone so it allows for the individual to customize the ride to their particular tastes.

The big question that concerned many avid American riders has been answered. First speculation was that the new Harleys would be built out of the company’s Bawal, India plant that has been assembling bikes since 2011. Rest assured all Street 750s and Street 500s for US and Canadian markets will be built at the Harley-Davidson® vehicle and power train operations plant in Kansas City, Missouri.

After the successful launch of their Project Rushmore several months ago, Harley-Davidson® seems to be headed for another great launch with these two new motorcycles this spring in select markets in the US. Pricing should be in the $6,700-$7,500 range.

I am just old enough to remember British “Rockers” with their beards, black leather jackets and most importantly; British motorcycles. The last of these British classics was the Norton Commando and Triumph Bonneville. Both disappeared from British roads in the 1980s, but are again on the rise. I was surprised to learn that the Norton survived on US roads throughout the missing decades in Britain and are now fi nding their way back with new models.

I visited Norton’s new factory, close to Britain’s Donington Park race track, where Sales Manager Sean Kynnersley reacquainted me with a legend. Factory is perhaps not the obvious term for the Norton operation. Formerly a British Airways offi ce building, Norton’s technicians hand build bikes in a fully carpeted workspace. As most of their assembly work is clean it seemed

Norton began in Birmingham, England, in 1898. First making motorcycle parts and then building bikes in 1902. However, it took until 1908 to fi t a Norton engine. The Norton racing legend began in the Thirties; of the nine Isle of Man TTs between 1931 and 1939, Norton won seven.

Norton contributed to WW2 by supplying almost 100,000 motorcycles to the forces. After the War, in 1949 the 500 cc Norton Dominator arrived.

The legendary Manx Norton appeared in 1950 with its Featherbed frame, raced by legends including Geoff Duke and John Surtees. This exceptionally stiff frame became the benchmark by which other frames were judged. In 1953 Norton sold out to Associated Motorcycles (AMC), who owned AJS, Matchless, Francis-Barnett and James. Norton pulled out of racing in 1954, but the Manx remained popular with privateer racers until production stopped in 1963.

American buyers contributed to Norton’s development by demanding more power. This demand was met in 1962 with the 750cc Atlas. But increasing the engine’s capacity caused vibration and was expensive to build. By the

late 1960s, competition from Japan was driving British motorcycle industry into decline. In 1966 AMC was reformed as Norton-Villiers.

The 750cc Commando arrived in 1968. The engine was mounted “isolastically” with rubber mountings. The vibration free ride made it a best seller, and was voted Motorcycle of the Year in Britain. Things looked good when the 850cc Commando appeared in 1973 and four new Nortons followed in 1974, including the John Player Norton race replica. But when the government withdrew its loans in 1975 Norton-Villiers went bust and the individual brands were sold.

Norton UK was re-launched in 1988. They enjoyed some racing success, winning the Isle of Man TT in 1992. Their only road model was a rotary “wankel” engined bike, which was supplied as an Interpol model for police use.

With debts of $11.5 million, in 1991, Norton UK was sold to American investor Nelson Skalbania, who put his daughter Rosanda in charge of Norton Motors (1993) Ltd. This incarnation of the company ended in 1994, amid controversy over attempting to reclaim Nortons placed as museum exhibits.

During the 1990s, Oregon based Kenny Dreer was restoring old Nortons. He launched a modernised Commando

in the early 2000s, but this was short lived and produced few bikes and ending production in 2006. Two of his prototypes are now in the Castle Donington factory.

After fifteen years of US ownership Norton returned to Britain thanks to Stuart Garner, UK businessman and owner of Norton Racing Ltd. Garner began production of a Commando based on Dreer’s model at Leicestershire’s Donington Park race track. Garner said that Norton will continue to race because racing is an essential part of their make-up.Norton Today

Norton’s philosophy is to buy as local as possible, with 83% of their suppliers from the UK. Where they cannot buy British, they look for the world’s best; such as Swedish Ohlins suspension and Italian Brembo brakes. The first of the new Commandos were single seat café racers. Early market research suggested most Norton owners would ride solo. So a single seat bike was designed, with a frame resembling the classic Featherbed frame. Later market pressure necessitated a dual seat, but most are still sold solo.

In just four years of production, Norton has sold over 1000 bikes. Only 350 are on British roads, the rest are mainly in Europe and the USA. The bike they shipped to the USA for type approval covered 12000 miles, as it had to be approved individually by each state. Sean described California as being a benchmark state, with many other states accepting California’s test results.

Stuart Garner commented: “The Norton team has accomplished a monumental feat. The bike has come through rigorous testing, showing durability and build quality.

The process of opening the US market began two years ago with the recruitment of Dan Van Epps, ex CEO of Ducati North America, who helped steer us through the process to achieve the approvals. Peter Howes of Norton Canada has also worked tirelessly to make this possible...It has taken the Norton team a little under four years to rebuild this iconic British motorcycle brand.”

The Commando genuinely is a hand built bike. It takes between eight and 12 hours for two technicians to build a Commando. Some pre-assembly is done earlier in the process, but each bike is essentially built by two men. This pace of production does mean that waiting time for a new Commando in the UK is 6 months. They have orders for 3000, which they are building at a rate of ten per week. So a Norton owner will be in an exclusive club. As a small manufacturer, with local suppliers, dealing with warranty work is always swift.

During my visit they were working on their Domi Racer project. This is a limited edition of 50 bikes, which was the result of giving their designers a free reign to come up with something special.

US retail prices for Norton’s model range starts at$18,000 for the Commando Sport to $20,000 for the Café model.

Former AMA Flat Track Champion and platinum country artist Beau Braswell

is returning to the fl at track circle to do a little racing while his singing career is in full swing. Braswell and his newly formed Twist Grip Motorsports signed with Don’s Kawasaki in Hallam, Pennsylvania to kick off his 2014 fl at track racing. Also on board is Braswell’s former apparel sponsor, JT Racing USA. Says Braswell, “I won all my #1 plates with them ... I’m excited to wear the new JT racing line as well as stand beside my friends and heroes such as Jean Michele Bayle, Ron Lechien and Broc Glover.”

Kawasaki Motors USA is on board supplying Braswell’s Twist Grip Motorsports with Kawasaki motorcycles on the AMA Pro Flat Track racing series. “We won’t run Expert Twins we will only be running Expert single Grand National races to get our feet wet in 2014. We will have a three rider team made up of myself, 9-time Peoria TT Winner and national number Henry Wiles #17 and Dan Ingram #31. Honda doesn’t intend to take a backseat to any manufacturer

in any of their classes so they have announced three additional 2014 models to come out this year just as the riding season is beginning. They are the four-cylinder CBR650F, the Interceptor 800 and the Montesa Honda Cota 4RT Repsol Edition.

Built around a smooth, inline-four engine specifi cally tuned for low-to-midrange torque, the CBR650F has a powerband that’s suited for a wide range of riding styles. Powerful disc brakes give you premium stopping power performance and a Twin-Spar-style steel frame forms the basis for the CBR650F’s impeccable handling, while making it versatile for the weekday commuter, weekend sport riding, long trips, short hauls, solo or with a passenger.

The Interceptor’s 782cc V-4 VTEC engine has new fuel-injection mapping for better low-end torque feel. Additionally, Honda is delivering a limited number of competition trials bikes to the US Market the Montesa Honda Cota 4RT Repsol Edition...Spanish motorcycle manufacturer Montesa started business in 1944 and it quickly established a solid reputation for building successful competition bikes. brand into its fold in the mid-eighties and today the company makes some of the best trials bikes in the world. For 2014 and available in April, American Honda is offering a limited number of the Cota 4RT, a new competition-ready machine featuring a four-stroke Honda 260cc engine. Most who have known me and seen me travel over the years

know I have been pulling cargo trailers behind my POS for over 20 years over 100K miles. Since the Surry Convention in 2007, my trailer has been the American Legend, which was manufactured in Mahomet, Illinois, (now by Hannigan Motorsports in Murray, KY) and is the one shaped like a Harley saddlebag. It is a premium trailer and one which I prize.

Now let me say my 1986 Pod (now Country Trailers out of Wisconsin) gave me 15 years of good service and I sold it for exactly what I paid for it fifteen years earlier, so it owed me nothing. My AL offered itself as a total basket case for a fifth of its original retail value, so I rebuilt it just before heading to Surry, my first time tackling the Canadian Rockies. Its performance on that trip made me a proponent for life!

I was unable to make contact. On the return from this year’s convention in Hot Springs, I routed by Mahomet and the factory to find it is now a U-Haul outlet, but still bore the signage from AL. I then started to have visions of looking into acquiring the rights to manufacture and market these quality trailers as one who has an interest in keeping them on the road. (And to maintain parts availability!)

I talked to Bill, of Bill’s Trailer Sales in Hamden, NY while at Sturgis, as they come up on Google if you search American Legend Trailers. Bill’s carries a number of quality lines and were an AL dealer. Bill echoed my impressions of AL and informed me that AL had sold out to Hannigan Motorsports (dashing my visions of going into business for myself) a long respected manufacturer of sidecars and trike conversions. Bill also told me that he immediately sells any AL he can lays his hands on because of their high quality. He also informed me that

Hannigan Motorsports was set up at the rally, and where to find them. So I set off find David Hannigan.

I didn’t expect Mr. H. to remember me, from when I talked to him in the late 90’s when I was shopping sidehacks, so I was not disappointed. He informed me the folks in Mahomet got hurt by a knock off import and their pricing. He informed that he had indeed bought the forms and rights. He had doubts whether HM would make any money off of producing ALs. So far, by August, Hannigan has only produced a couple of units, but they are on their website, if anyone chooses to order. At least I, or any other Blue Knight® owner of an AL, can order parts. Don’t worry about me going into the trailer business-no way can I compete with David Hannigan who is a well established class act!

I have to say that my AL is the smoothest handling trailer I have ever pulled (If anybody brags that they do not know it’s back there, they don’t

annually in the Atlanta area for motorcycle riders of every make and model, put on an event that everyone enjoyed. Paul Tutel, Sr. along with Christian and Jason of Orange County Choppers made guest appearances and signed autographs and took pictures with hundreds of their fans. The Snake Master put on several demonstrations showing off his snake collection and how to handle them properly. There were lots of motorcycles to see from vintage to full custom.

Garwood Custom Cycles, who had a custom Busa of theirs to grace the cover of Southern Biker Magazine, had lots of bikes to show off with all new custom paint designs. IronWorks Magazine will print its final issue March 2014. It was started and stayed a Harley-Davidson and custom motorcycle magazine throughout its run. With new challenges facing the magazine and apparent lack of large advertisers, the publishers decided to pull the plug on the magazine.

is a great place to hang out called Beer Belly’s. You can find it at 512

West Layton Avenue near the airport. They are known for their Friday fish fries. You can get pan fried walleye or bluegill for $14.99 with slaw and fries. The best is the beer battered walleye. Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday is the slow roasted 16 oz prime rib at $24.99 with salad and baked potato. It was some of the best I’ve ever had.

Some of their signature dishes are: Reuben rolls stuffed with sauerkraut, swiss, corned beef, 1000 Island dressing and fried golden brown at $8.99. Chicago grill, roast beef grilled with green onion, tomato, sour cream on french bread at $8.99. Everyone’s favorite is the belly burger, 1/2 lb Angus, Swiss, bacon, mushrooms, onions, lettuce, tomato and 1000 Island dressing at $9.99.

With all this great food they should change the name to full belly because you will leave there stuffed.

After a crazy winter filled with rain, sleet, snow, ice and even earthquakes, it looks like we’ve

finally turned the corner, the calendar has flipped to March, and that means riding season. Time to hit the road.

Before jumping on the bike for destinations known, and my personal favorite, unknown, it’s best to take a few minutes to make sure you and your bike are prepared for all those exciting miles to come. Motorcycle safety, and protecting you and your passengers should start before you take your first ride of the season. Here are just a few tips before you start the season:

Take the time for a good, slow inspection of your bike starting with the tires. This is especially important after your bike has been sitting through a cold winter. You’ll want to make sure the tire pressure is at the recommended level, that there aren’t objects stuck in the tread or visible cracks. Make sure your tires also aren’t showing signs of excess wear.

Check all of the fluid levels making sure to replace or top off those that need it. Visually check for leaks, especially if you have levels that are low for no reason. That may very well indicate a leak. Maintaining the engine oil is one of the easiest ways to prevent major engine repairs, and as you know, repairs mean money out of your pocket and time off the bike.

Lights on a bike are so important, not only because it’s the law, but because it helps others to see you. Walk around the bike making sure the headlights, high and low beams, turn signals and brake lights are all working well and securely attached. Make sure to check all reflectors as well for cracks.

Next, check over the mechanics of your bike. Look over the brake and clutch cables for any sign of wear or fraying. If necessary, check your bike’s maintenance book to learn how to detach the cables from their housings and apply lubricant. Check the brakes themselves as well making sure to replace the pads if they are worn. Inspect the belt or chain, spark plugs, battery, suspension and chassis. Check the exhaust and any air intakes for animals or nests that may have made themselves at home during the winter.

Last but certainly not least, check your documents. Make sure your registration is up to date and your tags are good to go. Also, double check your insurance. Make sure it is didn’t lapse over the winter. This will keep you out of trouble with law enforcement, but more importantly, it will be there in case you need it.
