Hello Folks, We hope this finds you doing well. Recently, someone asked me why I ride motorcycles. That answer was complicated and complex because there are many reasons why I ride motorcycles. As a child, I was fascinated with cars and motorcycles. I liked to help my father work on our vehicles back when it didn't take a computer to tune them up. Being a girl at that time

however, the societal norms didn't really encourage girls to have an interest in cars. One day, I saw this motorcycle rider park and when the rider dismounted the bike, the rider took off the helmet and out flowed this long, blonde hair, and I realized a woman was riding the motorcycle! Suddenly, I had an epiphany: Girls can ride motorcycles! In the back of my mind I thought: One day, that will be me riding a motorcycle. After 30 years and the time was right, that finally happened and it has been the best experience ever! I ride for the feeling of freedom it brings me. I ride for the camaraderie and meeting many new friends through motorcycles. I ride for the charity events and benefits that bring happiness to many underprivileged individuals. I ride to encourage other women if they are thinking about riding. Happy Motoring!

The DCT version also comes with a three-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) system which reduces rear wheel torque when it senses loss of traction.

The engineers designed the CRF1000L using a four-valve Unicam head design to keep the engine dimensions compact along with housing the water pump in the clutch casing, while both the water and oil pumps are driven by the same balancer shaft. The 270° crankshaft is made from the same material as their CBR1000RR’s crank; biaxial primary balance shafts counteract the vibrations.

quite some time. Due in dealerships in the early part of 2016 (but you can pre-order), Honda is coming out with their CRF1000L Africa Twin. It was developed following the “True Adventure” concept and emphasizes achieving outstanding performance from the open highways to technical trails. The design of the new adventure tourer aims to keep “real world off-road capability without compromising touring comfort and everyday agility.”

The African Twin will have a brand-new 998cc parallel-twin power plant pushing out estimated 94 horsepower. This new engine can achieve a range of up to 248.5 miles with a full 5 gallon fuel tank. It will be available in two versions, one with Honda’s standard six-speed gearbox and the deluxe version will come

Honda opted to invest time and money in designing a brand new motorcycle from the ground up instead of building one from an existing model. “No fewer than 32 patents have been applied for on this innovative model, and its specifications surpass the competition in several important areas. We know our customers have been hungry for a no-compromise, do-it-all adventure bike, and we’re confident that the Africa Twin fits the bill”, Said Lee Edmunds, Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications at American Honda.

The 5th Annual Destination Helen Motorcycle Rally had a new

headquarters this year. Ms. Pat moved her Chattahoochee Biker Gear shop across the street to a new HUGE location and had the event centered there. Lots of vendors were there for everyone to scoop up anything they could want motorcycle wise.

The SBMag Road Crew pulled in for a great weekend of fun and rides in the German themed town of Helen, GA. Getting there was as much fun as being there as the roads en route to Helen, Georgia are prime motorcycle terrain with winding, friendly roads with spectacular views. Lots of motorcycles were all over the city and at night, the restaurants and entertainment venues were packed. This event brings in tourism dollars from all over the south as noted from the license plates I glimpsed at when I went to events.

Don’t miss Destination Helen next year; it continues to grow and is one of the most relaxing and hospitable rallies you’ll attend. And if you decide to hit Oktoberfest, stop in and see Ms. Pat and tell her the Mag Man sent you.

Take theFirst Step!

Whether you're content to sit on the back of a bike or enjoy taking command of the road yourself, there are more and more women who are experiencing the joys of motorcycling every year. You may be like one of the many women I've talked to who aren't quite sure if they would want

their own bike or not. I've got four words for you: motorcycle safety foundation course. They are taught all over the country, normally take two to three

days of your time, are relatively inexpensive (a whole lot cheaper than buying a bike and reselling it if it's not for you) and use small bikes usually around 250 cc's. Right now, one out of every three students is a woman, so you'll be in good company.

My own theory on why so many more women are driving their own bikes these days is the fact that the classes have saved women from being at the mercy of well-intentioned husbands and boyfriends trying to teach their women to drive on over-sized bikes while being scared to death that their prized possession will be dropped and mess up their custom paint job. Needless to say,

the tension involved here could not only take away from a woman's first driving experience, but it also could lead to divorce and break-ups. So to save the relationship, many women have simply opted to stay on the back of the bike. But with courses available, many women are making the shift to their own bikes with relatively little relationship damage.

As I was writing this article, I thought back to some of my earlier experiences. I had ridden smaller bikes as a young girl, but at 5' tall (and no, I didn't forget the inches) when I got on my ex-husband's first Sportster, the only way I could drive it was to have him on the back so he could put his feet down when I needed to stop. Needless to say, I was young and foolish and this is not the recommended way to enjoy the behind-the-bars experience. On a major cross country trip when he would fall asleep, I would have to wake him up as we pulled off an interstate ramp in order to stop at the stop sign. It was like flying an airplane and not quite sure if your landing gear was going to

come down or not. Now remember, I said I was young and foolish and would never recommend anyone ride a bike that both their feet couldn't be firmly planted when they came to a stop.

So just remember those four words, " motorcycle safety foundation course." You don't have to make a decision to drive for the rest of your life. You don't have to decide what kind of bike to buy. Those decisions can come later. Right now, your only decision is to take the course. So what are you waiting for, find a course near you, and get signed up!

Living now where I do, in a very rural area on the Steelhorse Ranch, we constantly see deer,

turkeys, the occasional coyote, possums, raccoons and many other animals on our road travels to and from the house. A couple times we’ve had close calls like when I hit a raccoon and nearly went over the handlebars and crashed. My wife and I are overly cautious on these back roads for just that reason.

Bill Percea, the inventor of the patent pending Deer Screamer asked me to review his product for our readers in both of our magazines. As skeptical as I am from all those other air whistle thingies, I agreed to give it a try. I’m gonna cut to the chase on this one. I’ve had it attached to the headlight on my bike for a little over a month and half. Not only have I not even seen any deer on the side of the road like I always do, I’m not seeing any animals…NONE. I have been as shocked and proven wrong as I could have ever been (since I really didn’t think it would work in the beginning).

I let Rick Adams, who also lives in a rural area in middle Tennessee, try one out. He had the exact

The Deer Screamer By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

same story… “Man, I’m not sure if this thing is making this happen, but we aren’t seeing anything, and I always see deer and an occasional critter riding at night.”

Bill Percea said, “This is a new audible deer whistle that mounts on the front of any motorcycle (or car). It is wind activated at (approx 35mph) and emits an audible whistle 200 yards down the road to alert deer and all wildlife. It cannot be heard by the rider, even on a quiet bike. The deer do not like the sound of this whistle the closer it gets. Wildlife are very unpredictable, but I know it will lower you odds of a wildlife collision.”

The Deer Screamers are very small and can be mounted sideways or even upside down, but only mounted in a direct, clean line of air to ensure constant whistle. He currently supplies the New Jersey State Police with his units to lower their collision rate. They have had them on for a year and their collision rate has dramatically dropped. Animals that seem to be affected are deer, groundhogs, raccoons, birds, dogs and foxes (horses and cattle are not affected).

As Rick Adams put it, “For really inexpensive extra insurance from a deer or critter causing you to crash, I’d buy them for all my vehicles after this.” These items are made in the USA and can be purchased online. Their website is www.deerscreamer.com.

14 years after that hateful day of September 11, 2001, we still remember those killed that

day as well as the ones that continue the fight against terrorism. Over 500 people attended the Knoxville TN ceremony to honor those brave heroes of 9/11 and vow, Never to Forget.

This year marked the first year Kristin and I brought our grandchildren, Nick, Natalie and Branson, to let them see how some great Americans show their respect for others and to start them on their path of always remembering what happened that day. My son Steven (USMC) and Tiffany my daughter-n-law (US Navy) were part of that fight against those who would harm us, which is still carried on today.

Many cities and towns around our great country held a 9/11 Remembrance Ride, because on this day, we will always hold this date close to our hearts when the enemy brought terror to our shores. The ceremony was emotional and as taps played, riders made their way to their bikes. During the route, many folks waved flags, cars stopped and waved and the many ladder trucks with huge flags were along the route in many places. Each rider carried a handlebar hanging card contained the photo of someone lost during the New York 9-11 tragedy. The many law enforcement on motorcycles, in cars and a helicopter escorted total ride.

This year was special due to my grandchildren being with us and I hope and pray, they Never Forget, either.

We Remember 9/11

Fall is in the air, which in the Southeast, means the best riding days are right in front of us. For a lot of us, fall

brings cool crisp days perfect for the weekend warrior or the everyday rider. Yet, with more riding can sometimes bring on the physical issues that we sometimes get with riding too much. Most riders have experienced some aches and pains that can be attributed with riding. Most of us agree that the stress relief and joy of riding outweigh these issues, and therefore, we should just ignore it. But a few simple changes in riding techniques can help alleviate these issues without cutting into your riding time.

Neck and hip pain can sometimes come along with riding. If you have neck pain after riding, this can be associated with the extra weight from wearing your helmet. Newer helmets are both safer and lighter than their older counterparts. If you have been riding with the same helmet for a while, check out some of the newer DOT approved helmets which may take some straing off your neck. Hip pain can come after long rides, or after logging a weekend of travel. Simple stretching and staying hydrated can help alleviate hip pain. Also, keeping in shape with simple exercises during the week can strengthen your core and keep you feeling good after a long ride. The biggest complaint riders seem to have is hand and wrist discomfort. Numbness of the hands is a major issue for a lot of riders. The biggest cause for the discomfort and pain is compression and irritation to the nerves running down your arm into your hand. Yet, there are many steps you can take to alleviate the pain. Here are some suggestions:

- Replace your stock grips with softer foam grips, or add grip covers to your bike.

- Wear gloves. Either gel palm gloves or well-padded gloves can protect your hands and wrists.

- Adjust your brake and clutch levers to straighten out your wrists. This is the same theory as people who can get carpel tunnel from typing too much. This will take compression off your ulner collateral nerve.

- Reposition your handle bars, and make sure your seat is not set too high.

Also, just as we spoke of earlier, make sure when you are on long trips to stretch. Just like your legs and back, take some time to stretch your hands and fingers. Simple maneuvers like pulling your fingers back with your wrist straight will stretch the ligaments and tendons you are trying to protect. Even though riding doesn’t seem like a strenuous activity, long trips can take a toll on your body. To make sure you are in pristine riding shape, keep yourself in shape! A fit rider will make for a more enjoyable riding season. With the fall around the corner, whether you are at Myrtle Bike Week, taking advantage of the beautiful Tennessee Mountains or hanging with our friends in North Georgia, come visit your friends at Steelhorse Law. Are you ready for Biketoberfest 2015? It will be here before you

know it. The official dates are October 15th - 18th. Most people know and recognize Main Street in the heart of Daytona Beach. You

can sit back and people watch or check out the talented bands all up and down the street, stop in at the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon (Where you are better off here than across the street) and see our good friends Kyle and Nicole at the Chrome Bar & Grill where they have the best food on Main Street. That’s just two of the many great places along Main Street.

Don’t forget about one of the busiest and most popular bike show is Willie’s

Old School Chopper Show on Thursday the 15th at Willies Tropical Tattoo. Plenty of other places to hit on US 1 like The

Iron Horse Saloon, Broken Spoke, Beaver Bar and Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona where all four provide great bands, contests, food and beer. I almost forgot to mention The Rats Hole Custom Bike Show which is now located at Indian of Daytona on Beach Street. This is the Grand Daddy of all bike shows. Make sure to visit Daytona

Head north to Ormond Beach and ride the ever popular Scenic LOOP or go south on Tomoka Farms Rd (S.R. 415) and stop in at Cacklebery

Campground where it’s a destination all in itself with a Car & Bike Show with Pin Up Contest. Across the street is the Cabbage Patch Bar famous for its Cole Slaw Wrestling. This is just the tip of the Iceberg as to what’s going on during Biketoberfest and next year’s 75th Anniversary Bike Week. Stay tuned for some great photos from this year’s event.
